The FOFC Television Family Draft - Draft Underway

Okay I'm a little bored and had some time on my hands so I decided to think up another draft to host on FOFC. There are a lot of TV Junkies on the board so I've decided to host a Sitcom Draft.

The rules are pretty simple, draft the best sitcom family, and see if the FOFC Community thinks that you have the best family. All judged by them.

In the time honored tradition of FOFC drafts created and primarily run by Maple Leafs, I will be running a Sitcom Family Draft.

FOFC Sitcom Family Draft

This Draft will consist of 10 rounds.

How To Play

If you want to play, PM me. If there's a lot of interest, I'll randomly select ten players. By "randomly" I mean that after a day or so, I'll "randomly" pick whichever ten to twelve people I want.

The draft will be conducted via the forum, in a separate draft thread. When it's your turn to draft, you post, ideally with a brief note about the reason for your choice. If you won't be around, you PM someone else your picks in advance to keep things moving. You will agree to this, and then not do it. This will slow up the draft and annoy everyone. You won't care, you selfish prick.

The draft is a serpentine draft -- that the order reverses each round. Draft order will be determined before we start.

How to win

The fun here comes more from the draft itself than from actually winning, but just in case it matters: Once the draft is done, we'll hold a vote and let FOFC choose the winner. FOFC will pick someone shitty. They always do.

To win you want to assemble the best family possible.

The Rosters

You will draft a family of 6, a pet, best friend, bad guy/girl, and a location. It is up to you to decide who fits the categories the best

Your team will consist of 10 members, at the following positions:

Dad:

Mom:

Brother:

Sister:

Pet:

Best Friend of Lead Character:

Bad Guy/Girl:

Wildcard:

Housekeeper/Butler/Nanny:

Location of Family:

Additional rules thrown in to make it needlessly complicated

1) Once you draft a family member, pet, location, nanny, or anything from a TV showyou cannot draft another member from that same show.

2) When a "TV Character" is drafted, the actor or actress that plays that character many not be drafted by anyone else even if they are in another sitcom.

3) You are encouraged to write up a little piece on each of your picks to explain why you chose a player for that certain category. It could help you later on when it comes time for voting.

4) Additional categories or rules can be added by suggestion, but will be finalized before the draft starts.

5) I break all disputes and my decision is final.

6) No reality show characters. No movie characters.

A few notes

The draft is open to everyone -- observers are welcome. Discussion of picks is encouraged. In general, it's considered very poor form to suggest picks during the draft -- the equivalent of being the guy who doesn't play poker but sits at the rail and shouts out to get attention. However, it will happen. If you're the sort of person who thinks you'd be really, really bothered by this, do yourself a favor and don't play.

A final note

If the idea of doing a just-for-fun draft strikes as you as stupid and/or pathetic, but you're the type of person who likes to post about text sims on an internet forum... well, you may want to give this a miss until your sense of irony develops a little more.

I'd probably do better with this than I did in the NHL draft, but I'll stick with observing since I had much more fun that way. Good idea though.

Really want to be in a draft. But I just don't think I would do good in this one... even though I watch a lot of T.V. Will be part of the bleachers.

Great draft idea. I wish I had time during the days to participate in one of these. Maybe someday. In the meantime, I'll be watching. And casting a withering glare upon those who make poor selections.

Can't be in it, with no access to FOFC during the day, and my own impression of a lack of ability in this particular genre, but I will certainly be following along. A terrific idea, Brian.

Is there a definition of "sitcom"?

Because if not, I'm totally going Bucc on everyone. I'll be drafting characters from "Roots".

I guess we should add the rule that Reality Shows are not to be used...or should we just leave it up to the voters?

As an outsider, I would recommend no Reality Shows. It is going to be quite a stretch to fit people into the established categories.

Am I the only one that sees a pretty clear line between a sitcom and other types of shows?

A half-hour, situational comedy.

Do you guys not agree?

I don't want to just say 30 minute shows. There are some hour shows that can be added in. I'm not talking about CSI type shows, but there are a few out there that were an hour long and had "family" values or situations.

But all in all I agree with you.

Hour long shows are dramas, not sitcoms imo. I just think that in the TV World there is a very clear distinction between the two.

Was MASH a sitcom? The Osbournes? I think its cut and dry for the most part, but there's some ambiguity which I favor just leaving for the voters, personally.

Yes (1/2 hour situational comedy) and no (1/2 hour reality show).

I'm really confused as to how there is confusion here personally.

I dont agree. I should've went with my gut and left the word Sitcom out of the title...and just left it as TV Family Draft. But I"m willing to go with the majority here...if they want it to be limited to 30 minute shows then so be it.

I wouldn't be argueing if you had said TV Family Draft, but that's an ENTIRELY different game than the TV Sitcom Family Draft. ENTIRELY different.

There is a HUGE difference between a 1-hour family related drama and a 1/2 hour family-related sitcom.

The definition completely changes the way this game is played, so I'm not sure that I like that option.

I am trying to be the better one here and not start a fight with you like the last time we were in a draft together. Sometimes you nitpick drafts and read into things so seriously that it takes the fun out of it. I understand the point about no reality shows but by taking someone from a "TV Family" that was on an hour long show that bad? Again, it is up to the voters to decide.

As I said a few posts up, I am willing to let it up to you guys. I WANT it to include hour long shows, but if people joined thinking it was only the 30 minute ones, I will just go with that.

Don't remember a previous fight. *shurg*

I'll just shutup and hope the voters understand what a sitcom is.

seems like this is something usually left up to the voters. Selecting something from what most would consider a gray area is a high risk pick.

It is your game, design it how you want. If you want it to include hour long shows, pull the word "sitcom" from the description and everything will be fine. I have always taken "sitcom" to mean a half-hour show, but define it however you want in your game.

I think Carrot Top is funny so, my senses are highly tuned to what is or isn't humorous so, therefore, I know what sitcom is.

I'd like the "sitcom" vs "family" thing clarified, if only because I can see people taking Tony Soprano or JR Ewing and starting all sorts of arguments.

Beyond that, I'd be fine with letting the voters decide what a sitcom is. Let's face it, every single person in the draft is secretly planning to work The Simpsons in as a "sneaky" pick, so we might as well have that argument now.

My vision was good wholesome family. Is that what others interpreted?

I wasn't sure if you met this, or any sitcom. I had planned on bringing the raunch.

I'll sign up if there is still room. I just want to know what the limits are, if its only 30 minute shows thats fine, if its up to hour long shows thats fine too =)

I guess that's another thing we could leave up to the voters

Wholesome != sitcom, to me at least.

Also, can we take people who weren't part of a sitcom family? Can Sam Malone be my sitcom dad?

IMO the fun of these drafts is letting the voters decide what falls under the parameters.

If I want to take, for example, Danny McCoy from Las Vegas or McDreamy from Greys Anatomy I should be able to and let the voters decide the merit of the pick.

I agree.

Or Dany Heatley as a power forward

so now that there are 12 do we have an estimated start time?

I dont want to be the guy who holds things up.

Also one thing I have seen work is sending a PM to the person who picks after you
