Mount Rushmore of Christmas movies

You know the drill. List the four movies set in the Christmas season that you think are the pinnacles of the field. Here's mine:

1. A Christmas Story
2. It's a Wonderful Life
3. Miracle on 34th Street
4. Trading Places

1. It's a Wonderful Life
2. Scrooge -- 1970, Albert Finney and Alec Guiness, few know it even exists but for our family it is the standout Christmas Movie.
3. A Christmas Story
4. Tough call for the 4th spot between Miracle on 34th Street and Lampoon's...I'll go with Lampoon's.

Over the next 20 years, I could see Elf moving into that same class.

I haven't seen most of these movies (Christmas Story, It's a Wonderful Life, etc) and the few I have seen (Christmas Vacation) aren't going on any Mount Rushmores.

The older I get, the more I've come to realize that women just don't like It's a Wonderful Life the way men do.

As you can tell, I'm a -huge- fan of the Rankin/Bass Christmas specials. To me, they'll always define the holiday season.

Edit: Put in Christmas Vacation as it really does belong there.

Having these movies back to back on your list made me lol. Go from a raunchy movie to a sweet heart-warming kids movie.. haha.

So I take my 6 year old to the mall last night to see Santa and when we get there it looks like were staring at a 2 hour wait in line so I decide to kill some time in the mall and see if the line dies down a bit (it didn't).

Anyways, I stop in movie store right next to the Santa line and sitting on one of the racks is 1 copy of Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas on DVD. I get excited, my son has no idea what I'm excited about, I text my wife (who is at home wrapping presents) and the conversation goes sort of like this.

Me: OMFG THEY HAVE EMMETT OTTER'S JUGBAND CHRISTMAS HERE ON DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wife: huh?

Me: Nevermind, I guess I'm just old.....

Wife: Yup

I then bought the damn movie and went home happy despite standing in line for 2 hours so my son could be limited to telling Santa 3 things he wants for Christmas.

I have never understood the fascination with Christmas Story but that doesn't matter.

I have never thought of some of the ones listed as "Christmas" movies. Some would even consider The Godfather as a christmas movie. So I'll just stick with movies about the Christmas season, not just happen to have some of occur during the holidays (Trading Places is one of my very favorite movies but I wouldn't include it here).

Muppets Christmas Carol
Polar Express
Miracle on 34th Street
Christmas Vacation

My brother is famous in our family for having started his tradition (running on almost 15 years now) of watching Navy Seals on Christmas Eve.

What he said.

Tho, I'll disagree a little- Die Hard is, in my mind, very much a Christmas movie, tho not in the Christmas spirit, of course. They play Christmas music prominently and the Christmas party is a major part of the setting.

If you didn't have 'Ebenezer Screw', then your list was crap.

No list, but just want to say that, to this day, I have unresolved issues regarding A Christmas Story, because when I was a kid--and right about the time this move came out--I looked pretty much exactly like Ralphie. It's just wrong on so many levels for me.

My niece is 2. Tonight, at the encouragement of my brother and sister-in-law, who are pure evil, she turns to a picture on my Mom's wall from that time and said "Ralphie".

You suck, A Christmas Story!

After further review and reflection, I'm removing The Year Without Santa Claus and replacing it with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

I'd forgotten how much a classic that movie is until I remembered the pool scene again (with interesting parallels to a certain Miss Phoebe Cates scene and fits in with the Christmas fantasy scenes like in Season 1 of The Wonder Years).
