So anyway, trailer 2 looked pretty fun. This looks to be a pretty radical departure from the typical Star Trek movie, but I guess that was to be expected with this director.

Wow, this could be extremely cool, or finally bury the franchise.

LOL @ "bury the franchise". Worst case scenario, the movie bombs and they wait a few years before they try another movie or tv show.

The dude who plays Sylar in Heroes looks like he'll be a decent Spock. Don't know if anyone can replace the Shat as Kirk, though.

DS9 was awesome. It never got the respect it deserved.

Despite all of the movies, the TV series and the lore/history that has been built up since it was created, as someone who has been a Trek nerd (but not so much that I dress up, but I did learn some Klingon that I no longer remember in my younger days), I would not be opposed to a total revision and reboot of the whole damn thing.

I know (think) that this movie is just a different style of movie and it's meant to not be a reboot of the Star Trek universe, I'm just saying I wouldn't mind it. After 3 TNG movies that were pretty much all the same (Generations, Insurrection and Nemesis - First Contact being the only one that was a bit different), it's time for something fresh.

And DS9 is my favorite overall season. My favorite episodes come from TNG, but TNG also had a LOT of terrible episodes as well. DS9 was solid overall.

I thought a Star Trek movie thread would get destroyed by the ESPNBorg thread, otherwise I would have started it myself.

I'm not a Star Trek fan so much - no problem with it, but I haven't seen all the movies, most of the shows, etc... that said, this definitely piques my interest.

Same here... and if it was just the same as the other movies, probably wouldn't have even bothered to think about seeing it.

Wow. I just watched those trailers and I have to say, I'm impressed at this "well if it worked for Star Wars to go back to the beginning, we might as well do it too..." model here. I love the angle and can't wait for the movie. But yeah, I'd still rather 100% a DSN movie.

I would also like a DS9 movie. I was pissed when the show was canceled. The plot in DS9 was the best of all the Star Trek content. Cisco was a badass, and Dax was hawt....

I picked up a bunch of DS9 novels (including the 2 big "Relaunch" novels) earlier. Read the 3-book trilogy about the Occupation of Bajor the past couple weeks on the train. It definately really succeeded in...making the occupation seem more "real" even if it did suffer from some "mass market papberbackitis"

looking forward to the 2 big thick relaunch novels/collections though. Although without the Emissary and Jadzia I might find it hard to think of it as DS9.

I don't think I ever watched any of the star trek spin-offs like DS9 or whatever else. I am not sure if I saw all of the movies that have been out either. This one looks like it might be worth seeing though.

I have not seen a single TNG movie. I watched the original (off and on in syndication as a kid), TNG, some of DS9 (maybe 2 or 3 seasons?), and Enterprise. I think I only saw a couple of the original cast movies.

This movie is intriguing me so far.

that being said - who else laughed themselves half to death during Big Bang Theory last night with "Rocks-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock" and the discussion of whether ST:V or ST:I was worse?

Leonard: "While it is true that Star Trek 5 had notable failures in several key areas, Star Trek 1 failed across the board. Lighting, script, costumes, set design, special effects."

and later

Leonard: "Will you at least admit that Star Trek IV was far and away the best?"

I laughed myself half to death at this. Part of it was due to the fact that I have been a part of other Rock-Paper-Scissors extensions to 5 items, and partly because they all chose Spock all the time. The shot at George Lucas was great too.

That said, they could do a DS9 movie that was an hour and a half of Quark doing beetle-snuff and 30 minutes of shots of the station and I'd enjoy it more.

Interesting article about travel to Mars. It appears that engineers are looking at a Star Trek inspired design to design a future spacecraft.......

To be fair, DS9 did a good job wrapping everything up with the closing 9/10-parter (with a few exceptions). It was also the show I most missed when it was done. But it ended about the right time.

I agree. I am not sure if it would have continued at such a high level of quality. I think it started to slip a bit when they got the new Dax. That just never worked for me.

The last few seasons were fantastic though. Just so many great characters on that show.

I still prefer TNG over DS9. DS9 benefitted from the growing process TNG went through early on, and I just liked the concept of being on a starship more than I did a starbase.

I think overall TNG was better, but it never quite reached the level of consistency in quality that DS9 managed.

The first season of TNG is unbearably awful. The 7th (last) season was really, really bad save the finale and maybe one or two other episodes. The rest of the seasons were pretty good, but there was awlays a few absolute stinkers in each season.

DS9 started pretty weak, but once the whole war thing started and Worf came on board the show really picked up. The writers really started taking advantage of having the show set on a starbase. Instead of just a bunch of one-off epiosdes, they built a long, over arching story arc into the show. It worked really well.

Yeah, the first two seasons of DS9 were quite weak. But after that, it was good building to excellent.

I would go so far as to say the show was pretty weak until the end. The strong final season causes some people to remember DS9 as being better than it really was.

Voyager was better written and more consistent, plus Janeway had the balls that Cisco was lacking. DS9 had the stronger cast but Voyager was the superior program.

I cant comment on Voyager. I stopped watching the show in the middle of the first season. I thought it was pretty awful. Mayhaps it turned itself around and became decent.

The only thing I recall from the later seasons was the presence 7 of 9 Titties and some evil CGI alien insect monsters that were apparently enemies of the Borg or something.
