You want to be one of those guys walking up and down the beach looking for nickels? I didn't have you pegged for being over 60 already.

I had one when I was a kid. I enjoyed it. Used it all over the base we lived on in Germany and found tons of tin cans, nails, screws, and a few coins...

Used to metal detect alot in Virginia on old home sites. One of the main places I would go was an old Civil War campsite for the New York militia (was on private land). Pulled out some nice items from there including a Spanish Reale from around 1700. (Would love to know the story on that ending up there...). I still have a tree with a Minnie Ball implanted in it from a civil war battle.
Garrett has some decent detectors and that is what I started off with and moved up to the White's detectors although, I ended up going back to the Garrett line.. I had more of a feel with it detecting and there was just too much there to the White's detector. If you have the opportunity to field test some, definitely try because it really goes off what you are comfortable with. Do NOT buy one of those Radio Shack or Walmart detectors. I will take it and beat you with it if you do.

I would like to get one too. I go gold panning and I think it would help in my search for the next mother lode.

You have to get aggressive and find something in the house that she owns that she doesn't use like say, the stove. If you lose that argument, take her jewelry and throw it in the yard and say, gee.. I'd help you find it if only I had a metal detector!

It seems like a silly thing to have in your house, but YMMV

I would try to get one of those newer "body scanners."
(The kind that can see through cloths.)

I can't tell you how many times I've seen a cloth on the ground or a kitchen counter, and wondered what was under it, but I was just too lazy to lift it up.

You might want to get one of those lie detectors while you're at it.

How about a mettle detector instead? That could tell you a lot about people?

For those interested in Metal Detecting, found this game yesterday -
Treasure Valley Metal Detecting Game Newer game that appears that they are still working on. The front page is setup bad and could use some work, so definitely a work in progress, but I'm all for supporting indie work. Was playing the demo a bit yesterday and was a nice diversion. If you like metal detecting, might be fun to play around with. If you don't like Metal Detecting and find it boring.. ya, you'll find this boring.
