There is no way. You have to recognize there are some pronunciations are regional. Like where I live, everyone around here pronounces McDonough like Mc-Donna, unless you are on TV, then it is Mc-Dunna. My wife has a fit, because Taladega is pronounced Tala-deega in the area surrounding it. Who is right? The people that live there, or the rest of the world?

So, do you call him "Will Mc-Donna"?

Pardon my hippie speak, but that is truly far out!

Who? I'm talking about a town. It is not as if there are different ways of pronouncing the very same last name. For instance Bassham. Some poeple pronounce it Bas-sham. But I knew some people who got very pissed if you did that. They would say, "No. Bass-ham. Like the fish and the pig."

We have a lot of that around here...but most of it is rooted in appropriating spanish town names...

Like..we have a town called Los Gatos (yes, that does mean "the cats"). Everyone pronounces it "Loss gatt-os", when it's really "lowss gaw-towss". But, nobody really cares besides me.

I say "New OR-lee-uns" and most people laugh at me for it. People in New Orleans laughed at me, and now people in Pittsburgh laugh at me.

Most people say "New OR-lins" like Racer does. I've never met a single person from New Orleans who said "New Or-LEENS" or "NAW-lins". Not one. I can imagine people from outside Louisiana saying "New Or-LEENS" and people from rural Louisiana saying "NAW-lins" but I've never known any native New Orleanians who said it those ways.

Good point, NAW-lins has got to be more of a local-Louisiana thing. Something I heard while living in Shreveport and I will assume is a country-Louisiana thing, not a city-New Orleans thing.

In Georgia the town is called Vie-DAYL-ya, but as far as I know the onions they produce are pronounced everywhere else, Vi-DAYL-ya.

pi-CAN,
PEE-kin,
pi-KAHN?
I actually pronouns pecan differently at different times, and it never sounds "right" to me, no matter which way I say it. I hate Pecan Pie for this very reason.

Yeah, but that's just Kentucky. Other examples include Rowan County, pronounced ROW-un (rhymes with Trow, the garden implement) not RO-un. Another is Hurricane, called Hur-UH-cun, not Hur-uh-CANE.

For Guadalupe, some Austinites pronounce it "gua-da-loop", but I've always pronounced it "gua-da-lu-peh".

Envelope and Syrup are another two I can think of off the top of my head, that are not regional in nature. Some things are just accents, like calling fire, FAR, as an example.
