College Football: Week 4 Thread

We had an exciting game last night with Colorado's 17-14 OT win over West Virginia, and right now UConn is beating perennial Big XII bottom feeder Baylor 24-21 late in the 3rd quarter in a surprisingly entertaining game.

Holy crap that was a horrible call in the UConn game. Roughing the passer on a hit that ESPN timed at 0.3 seconds after the ball was released

and another one on the no-call PI. nice to see there are refs somewhere in America worse than Pac-10 refs.

Minor PING: Schmidty/Michigan St fans. Javon Ringer has obviously been a beast thus far. The rest of your offense didn't look good from what I saw of the FAU game, and the defense obviously got the shutout, but it was a driving monsoon, so the poor offense on both sides is expected. Anything else I should know about how your team has looked so far (I missed the Cal game.)

Oh, dola - my real school UMass is going to Texas Tech this week. On the plus side, our offense is for real and our secondary is supposed to be our strong suit on defense. On the downside, we've given up 42 points to Holy Cross and 52 to James Madison the past two weekends. What's the over/under on Michael Crabtree's day? 10-200 2 td's is my early guess.

Texas Tech doesn't have a "victory formation", so expect the shotgun regardless of what the score is late in the 4th quarter.

Based off our run defense against James Madison's option last week, I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

And I very much doubt I'll be paying any attention to this game. They don't even have a video webcast available.

BYU welcomes Wyoming to Provo, the second most hated team to Utah for the Cougars.

Wyoming will be pumped for the game, BYU has to lay the smack down on them like they did UCLA out of the gates.

We are without WR Michale Reed but that just means Luke and Oneill will get to punish the Cowboys secondary.

IU welcomes a better than usual Ball State squad to Bloomington. Their offense is dynamic this year, but our defense should keep them in check enough to get us a win. I hope.

In Columbus now and heading to see OSU play Troy. No Beanie, which is a bummer. Get to see my first OSU game at the 'Shoe in like 5 years, so that's pretty sweet.

Hopefully we can pull a 34-7 win or something. Just to show that our team can beat down the teams it's supposed to. Hopefully there's no repeat of the awful Ohio U. game.

argh I woke up too late to get in the stadium before the game starts (starts in 15 minutes and the student line is always horrendously long), but luckily it's on TV so I'll just watch it there.

Bad start for N.C. State as ECU gets a pick-six on the Wolfpack's first possession.

It doesn't get much worse then last weeks 59-0 drubbing at BYU's hands, so hopefully UCLA can play well vs Arizona. UCLA is traditionally strong at home so hopefully that helps

Ugh. We stop the Tide on opening drive, only to get hit with a running into the kicker penalty on the punt...

Fresh set of downs and they're at 3rd and 4... but then Wilson hits a WR inside the 10 yard line.

Two runs later and it's 7-0 Tide.

We drive into Alabama territory, then get smacked with a penalty, Dick fumbles the ball, incompletion, and a dropped pass and we have to punt.

We're screwing ourselves so far.

Otis Wiley is a beast in the secondary. Honestly though, MSU has two beast freshman WR in Dell and Cunningham, but their QB Hoyer is awful, but he is a senior which does mean something in college football.

MSU isn't that good but I see them winning like 28-21.

Georgia Tech up 31-0 on Miss. State midway through the 3rd quarter.

Tech starting QB Nesbitt left early with what looked to be a hamstring, freshman backup Jaybo Shaw has been just fine while MSU looks awful on offense in no small part because of the Tech defense. Dwyer has 141 yds & 1 TD (88 yds) on 9 carries.

Georgia Tech QB Josh Nesbitt goes out on the second drive of the game against Missisippi State with a pulled hamstring... backup QB Jaybo Shaw (true freshman) having no trouble. GT leads 31-0 in the third quarter, with 288 yards rushing on 32 carries (9.0 ypc)... Jonathan Dwyer has gone for 141 and a TD on 9 carries.

This would be the same MSU team that lost 3-2 to Auburn last week.

Huge goal line stand by N.C. State against ECU, as the Wolfpack is keeping it close, 21-17 ECU with about 9 minutes left in the game.

Heh, funny how closely our descriptions matched too.

Meanwhile, nice goal line stand by Tech keeps it 31-0 at the end of Q3. The thing I like about this team is the difference in attitude vs the last regime. Well that and improved fundamentals like tackling.

No way I believe they don't give up a score on that drive under Chan, the heart wouldn't have been there. Instead, there's still some fire out there even with the big lead.

It won't be like this every week of course and there's still a lot of growing pains to come I'm sure but I really like the attitude change I'm seeing.

And I also like the long TD run by Greg Smith while I'm typing this, now 38-0 (assuming Blair hits the PAT).

TD NC State. Tied with ECU at 24, 1:12 to go. Game's on ESPN1 (Tom O'Brien continues to coach conservatively by going for the tie rather than 2 and the win.)

I said almost the same thing to my wife this morning before the game started. She asked me if I was nervous for the game, and I said, "No...I actually like watching this team play. You can see they want to win, and last year I'm not sure they cared."

Jaybo has looked great, but I'm glad Nesbitt has two weeks to heal before the next game and four full weeks to heal before Clemson. Jaybo runs the offense really well, but it seems a step slower with him in there.

N.C. State beats ECU in OT, 30-24. I'm glad that the NCSU fans didn't rush the field after the game. That would have been embarrassing.

Conservative pays off, and NC State wins in OT 30-24. Goodbye potential BCS-buster #2 (BYU is still #1). Andre Brown had two nice runs there in OT to get the win.

Already 7-0 Florida over Tennesse & the Vols just fumbled a little pass to the back inside their 30.

Now 17-0 Florida early 2nd quarter, Tennessee goes on a 14 play drive inside the 10 ... and Crompton botches the f'n handoff and turns it over. Yeah the fullback was in the wrong spot, yeah the guard was slow but bottom line is that JC screwed it up.

Crompton = poorest excuse for a Vol QB in years, maybe in decades.

Phuck Phat Phil.

He's the sorry sumbitch who:
a) keeps putting Crompton's sorry ass out there
b) failed to develop an adequate starting QB
c) failed to acquire an adequate starting QB

And don't even let me get started on the waste of oxygen that is John Chavis. Can't coach up, can't gameplan when it matters, and can't motivate.

Might be a little too hard on Fulmer with C) , Crompton was highly thought of in the recruiting world.

I can't believe Fulmer doesn't feel more pressure from the Tennessee fanbase at this point in his career though. Maybe he will as the season goes on, the Vols look horrid in terms of execution today.

Actually I was thinking in terms of knowing he had jack shit left at QB since recruiting Crompton, not the recruitment of Crompton itself.

Players don't always live up to their hype, I can deal with that fine. But at some point between then & now, a competent staff should have realized that Crompton wasn't the answer and taken steps to upgrade the position.

I dunno. I think Alabama is at least competitive with Florida today. And Auburn, well if they could find any sort of offense. And I don't think anybody knows what LSU is or isn't at this point.

Sad to say it but I don't know that even beating UT by 40 or 50 proves much of anything. This looks like an extremely mediocre team to this point, not sure that anything more than .500 is realistic for the Vols this year. And if Florida is doing this to them, I shudder to think how many points Georgia could put up if they play motivated.

Miami up 24-10 at the half. Marve is awesome. So is Graig Cooper, who has 77 yards on 3 carries. Maybe give him a few more handoffs in the 2nd half?

Belated mention of 49-14 Alabama over Arkansas final.

Heh, those early mistakes really, really cost us and then it turned into a rout from there.

John Parker Wilson's not a good QB though, based on what I saw of him in this game. It's the run game and defense that look really good for the Tide.

Alabama is probably the best of the West, but aren't as talented as Florida. Auburn is just not good, and LSU is probably going to have a flukey year were they'll be beat by someone they shouldn't, and win when they shouldn't. Georgia going to lose at least two, and doubt Florida loses more than one.

BYU is stomping Wyoming 44-0 we scored two defensive TDs in this game.

We started subbing in our backups halfway into the 3rd qtr, halfway into the 4th we have our 3rd string QB and other 3rd deep players in.

On behalf of Schmidty ...

ND, have some Javon Ringer.
39 rushes
201 yards
2 TDs

MSU 23-7.
