Question about routers for wireless laptop

I have a desktop in my office at home, but I'm thinking about getting a laptop as well, maybe as soon as this weekend. The desktop has cable internet, and I'm told there is a router of some sort that would enable me to get online with the laptop via this cable connection?...

I'm super dumb when it comes to this techno gadgetry jazz, so I turn to you fine people to hopefully help me out - Is there anything special I need to know, how does this work, how does it set up, etc etc?

Thanks in advance.

Yes any router would do this. You connect the line that comes from your cable modem to your computer to the router instead, and viola. Of course there is more to it then that, but that's basically it. Also I suggest that after you change the connection that you unplug the power to your modem for a moment to let it reset so it can recognize something new is connected to it. Usually routers come with instructions showing you how to connect them and configure them.

If you go to a site like cnet.com, you can look at reviews of various routers. I have always used Linksys brands, and they have been fine.

And I agree with Dan that the instructions that come with the router are your best bet. I found mine pretty idiot proof.
