The FOFC Historical Person Draft Thread (Draft Underway!)

Hey everyone,

For those of you following the other thread, this is the official pick thread for the FOC Historical Persaon draft. All picks will be made here, and discussion can be done here as well. This will also continue to be the official sign up thread until we have a full set of drafters.

The goal of this draft is to select 12 historical persons in 12 categories, with no two people on the same time coming from the same historical era. The history of mankind has been broken down into 12 parts as well to create those eras. Once all teams of 12 historical persons have been selected, there will be a public vote thread, which will determine who put together the best team of historical persons.

Here is the original thread, if anyone wants to look at the discussion there.

http://operationsports.com/fofc/show...=1#post1758050

Since 12 is the operative number so far in this draft, I think 12 drafters would be ideal. I will put up a list of the current posters whom have expressed interest, as an early potential list of drafters.

Here are the 12 categories for which a historical person will need to be chosen:

Military Leader-- Generals, admirals, warrior kings, this is the category for the fighting man.
Religious Figure-- Religion has had a huge impact on human history; here is where you choose those who figured most prominently there.
Intellectual-- Scientists, inventors, philosophers, anything that took extraordinary use of one's mind to advance human knowledge or expand its applications or appreciation.
Ruler/Diplomatic Leader-- Not all leaders are military leaders, and some are better rulers than fighters. This is for the statesmen and national leaders of note.
Cultural Icon-- Some of the most impactful people in makind's history didn't lead nations or found religions. This is where you put them.
Evil Historical Person (moral evil)-- Not everyone's a saint, and there have been some baddies. To deny their impact on history would be irresponsible.
Good Historical Person (moral good)-- Heroes? Martyrs? Those who sacrificed for the common good, or espoused the traits of well being for all? The truly good-hearted go here.
Scribe-- Writers, poets, whether fictional or non-fictional, go here.
Musician-- From classical to rock and roll to rap, here are the musical artists.
Artist-- Painters, sculptors, whatever other forms of art you can come up with go here.
Sportsmen-- This is a sports board, of course. Top athletes go here.
Women-- You may laugh, but seriously, you know this draft will be dominated by men. This is a category reserved exclusively for women of history.

Each drafter will pick one person from each of the above categories.

Here are the timeline eras. Once again, drafters will only be able to select one person from each era.

2000s-Present Day
1980s-1990s
1960s-1970s
WWII (1939) -1950s
Pre-WWII 20th cent (1901-1939)
1800s
1700s
1600s
Renaissance (1400-1600)
Middle Ages (450-1400)
Classical Age (600 BC-450 AD)
Ancient Times (Pre 600 BC)

Note: I will update the above shortly to also reflect East Asian timelines, which will be roughly similar, especially in recent times, but may be a bit more loose as we go further back in history.

When you make a selection, please state the draft round and selection number in the post, in addition to the category you are selecting for, and the era you wish to use for that person (even if it's self-evident; we should try to be sure). For example:

1.1 Chief Rum, Evil Historical Person, 2000s-Present Day

This will be a snake draft, meaning the draft will go down the draft order one way and come back the other way in the next round, and alternate in that manner. The first drafter will have the top pick, but not pick again until the 24th pick. The last (12th) drafter in the first round will also be the first drafter in the second round, so essentially they get two straight picks.

If you have any questions, please let me know. You can ask in thread or PM me, if you like. If it is during the daytime of the work week, I can only be reached via my work email, as I have no board access there. So please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Incidentally, I also need a non-playing volunteer who has FOFC access in the day time, as I will want someone here who can receive draft lists and keep the draft going in my absence.--bolded this for emphasis.

The prospective player list will be in the next post, and the official draft list the one after that.

Have fun, guys, and feel free to toss in your commentaries as well. This sorta thing is as meant to be a discussion as it is a draft.

I will update the player list as we get confirmations and will put in an official post to kick off the draft after putting in a draft order (randomized).

Note: As of right now the above categories are the ones we will use, but discussion continues in the other thread, and there might be adjustments. But the above is roughly what I expect to have as the final categories/eras, and once the draft starts, it will be final.

If you want to discuss changes to the categories/era breakdown, I encourage you to continue to discuss it in the thread linked to in the first post here. The draft won't start until at least late Monday, so there is plenty of time to offer opinions.

Thanks!

Question...

I am assuming that there will be folks who can fit into multiple categories. For example, there are many Military Leaders who eventually became Rulers/Diplomats. Is this correct?

So it looks like there are 12 people now assuming that Noop, Render, and ColtsCrazy confirm.

I have a question about who you can and cannot draft. Can you draft someone like Moses, a historically important person who experts are unsure actually lived?

I didn't know that Moses' existence was in question. Maybe some of things he did, but never that he actually existed.

Maybe I'm wrong about his existence. I very well could be. But I think there are fair number of people's existence who are in question (I'm not saying people like Hercules, but people like Moses).

By the way, is it bad that I'm going off a list of great people and leaders from Civilization 4 to determine who to draft?

Moses Malone scored over 27,000 points and won three MVP's. I don't really think there is any doubt that he existed.

His is existence is indeed questioned, as there's not a lot of archeological evidence on the Egyptian side to back up the biblical account. There are, of course, many plausible scenarios which potentially corroborate the Exodus story, but his existence is unknown for sure, unlike Jesus or Mohammad.

All right, guys, thanks everyone for the interest. I have updated the player list. Everyone from the other thread confirmed except noop.

noop thought he might have issues with the complexity, though, and I haven't heard back from him. I am going to place him last in the draft order, and DaddyTorgo, if this is okay, I will have you as his alternate. If he backs out, or doesn't respond before the pick comes, you may pick for him and take his spot. Thanks again for your interest.

I'll try to respond to everything above first, finalize everything for the rules, and then I'll come up with the draft order. Looking forward to this. And everyone have fun!

Well, then, that's perfect. Maybe just one day to worry about then.

Yes, that is correct. Different historical persons will sometimes fit into different categories, and where you place them will be a part of your strategy, and an element on which the voters will ideally consider in voting for you.

This is why when you pick a player, you must also state the category you are placing him/her in and what era you are using (even if it is self-evident).

Depends. WHat's your current curriculum?

Of course that's fine. Just watch out dropping any sly Civil War opinions around that Bucc guy.

If we are certain that someone did not exist, then he cannot be used. So Captain Ahab, Frodo and Ironman are out (please, don't try to argue for their existence, lol).

But Moses is only someone who may or may not have existed. For instance, there are actually not too many sources that corroborate Jesus' existence. I believe there is only one source outside of The Art of War that makes mention of Sun Tzu. And no one is certain Elvis is dead.

Really, if it's rationally possible said historical person existed, he is allowed to be drafted. But keep in mind that the voters themselves may take issue with this, so be prepared for that (I think it's remote, but something to think about).

Ideally it would be, but I myself will be away at work during most days, and won't be able to monitor the thread. I will have someone monitoring the thread for me, and they may take it in hand to move things along. But there's a careful balance between being too lax, and being too Nazi-ish. I'm not going to press unless I have to, but I will encourage everyone to try to check in at least occasionally (and more if you know your pick is coming), and I also very much encourage people to prepare short draft lists if they suspect they will be away when their pick comes up.

I will give short list details in a post below.

All right, the random order has been posted in Post #2, and we're set. Please use the first post for rules and categories and eras, and also for instructions on how to draft.

The alternate moderator will be oliegirl. I will not be available at FOFC during the work week, from around 5:30 a.m. PDT to 5:00 p.m. PDT, so oliegirl will be the one monitoring the pace. Please send all draft lists to BOTH me and oliegirl via PM (if this is what you choose to do).

I cannot post at FOFC, however, I am available. You may email me at [email protected] up until 4 p.m. PDT every work day, and I will respond. Primarily, I make myself available in this way for questions. Draft lists and the like you should keep in PMs, as I cannot do anything with your lists at work.

However, I leave work at 4 p.m. PDT, so if your question is after that time, you should just PM it here and I will get to it when I get home (usually takes about an hour).

I am not setting a deadline for drafting time, and am hoping you will all be on the honor system, and try to at least be present for your picks or send in lists if you think you will not be around. It usually takes a day to establish a pace, so I am not concerned for Day One, but after that, we should try to keep the draft going at a moderate pace. In addition to sending in lists, it is usually a good idea to send a PM to the next drafter to let them know they are up.

And remember, have fun!

THE DRAFT HAS NOW BEGUN. BARKEEP HAS THE FIRST PICK

No one better mention Shia Lebouf. I'm hoping he slips under the radar until it is my turn to pick.

Hi folks, glad to see this is under way!! I will be out of touch from approximately 12:00 till 2:00 pm today and then again from 7:30 till late late tonight (tennis match) so bear with me if my picks come up in those time periods. I will endeavor to get a list to Bucc and Chief so that my picks won't slow us down too badly.

Last historical draft I had the first pick as well. It's a lot of pressure. There are many figures who would be fine starts to my team, but I'm going to go with the guy who has had an impact on the most people worldwide.

1.1 Jesus of Nazareth - Religious Figure (Classical Age)

I figured this was going to be the first pick.

Yeah, that's not surprising. I think the Bible and Jesus' birth have both been picked #1 in previous drafts.

Which one was his Birth picked one? I picked 4th of July in the historical draft with 1.1

Yeah, I sort of expected that too, but I have this nagging question of wether jesus himself actually effected that many people? Wasn't it more his followers and the growing legend of jesus and what he did that really effected people more than anything?

Anyway, just thinking out loud I guess. Good solid and safe pick BK, nicely handled for the 1.1

Okay, I guess it wasn't #1, but it was one of the first few picks.
