I'm With Stupid #157 - results
I’m With Stupid #157 – Game Show edition
I’ll say it right up front. I take some pride in my IWS question selections, but I regret not thinking of a **great** one for this set until after I had posted my set. Naturally, I blame those who simply wouldn’t stand for the proper fermenting of the IWS development process – but for them, we would have had a battle of game show catchphrases, and could have weighed “I’d like to buy a vowel” versus “come on down” versus “no whammies!” versus “is that your final answer” versus “survey said.” My regrets – it would have been the best question in this set, and could have replaced the obvious eliminator #5. Anyway… 1. You want to demonstrate what we mean by "game show" to someone who knows nothing at all of American culture. You may show one episode of one show. What show do you select? 33 The Price is Right 7 Jeopardy! 4 Wheel of Fortune Deal Or No Deal Solid start here – with one pretty clear winner. 2. Name someone who is best known as a game show host. 26 Bob Barker 17 Alex Trebek Pat Sajak Chuck Woolery Not sure if the split there is a generational split, or a daytime/nighttime split. And candidly, there were more people than you might guess who had an odd pairing for questions #1 and #2… I have trouble seeing how you come up with TPIR for #1 but then pick another host for this question right afterwards. **shurg** 3. Name someone who is not known as a game show host, but who you think will be hosting a game show ten years from now. 8 Ryan Seacrest 5 Dan Patrick 3 Drew Carey 2 Jay Leno 2 Kathy Griffin 2 Jimmy Kimmel 2 Rosie O’Donnell 2 Oprah Winfrey Alan Thicke Adam Sandler Jason Alexander Pumpy Tudors Tim Allen David Spade Dane Cook Carson Daly Drew Lachey Stephen Colbert Sarah Silverman Conan O'Brien Norm McDOnald Ashton Kutcher Ray Romano Jeff Foxworthy Paris Hilton Tiki Barber Jerry Seinfeld Hats off to FOFC for a solid range of answers to this tough question – even many of the solo responses were pretty solid, I thought. I hadn’t even thought of Dan Patrick (I thought Seacrest was the “right” answer here) but after posting realized that I may have left the door open to Drew Carey, and was worried that might be the unintended winner. 4. What game show, past or present, do you think would be the most fun (not necessarily the most profitable) to participate on as a contestant? 12 The Price is Right 6 Jeopardy! 5 Let’s Make a Deal 4 Press Your Luck 3 American Gladiators 2 Dating Game 2 Family Feud 2 Match game 2 Wheel of Fortune Dog eat Dog Survivor What's My Line Deal or No Deal Password Millionarie Double Dare Solid split again – and again it’s Jeopardy! taking a back seat to TPIR. I have no idea if people really believe TPIR would be fun to play, or if this was just an echo from question #1, thinking TPIR is **the** iconic game show, and is just the correct answer to any IWS question calling for a game show to be named. Either way, winnah. 5. Name something, other than cash or a car, that is commonly used as a sort of "grand prize" for a game show. 43 trip furniture jet ski Okay, let me be clear. I think there is a role for the “eliminator” style of question. It’s healthy to have a pretty clear winner mixed into a good set of IWS questions, where you can make a clear distinction between good answers and not. That’s fine – but this went way too far. Eliminating two entries was a waste of a question – this would have been a decent question had I just included trip/vacation on the “other than…” list. **sigh** 6. You're sitting down with a half hour to kill, and you turn to the Game Show network. What "vintage" game show do you hope they are showing? 13 Press Your Luck 10 Match Game 6 The Price is Right 4 Family Feud 2 Let’s Make a Deal 2 Hollywood Squares 2 Pyramid Newlywed Game Jeopardy! Love Connection Tic Tac Dough Dating Game Gong Show I tried to make this question more personal… to avoid, if nothing else, just another list of answers to the question “name a game show.” And, I think it succeeded. I honestly had no idea the power of the whammy, I would have missed here. Scoring results to come… |

4th from the bottom? Oops...
I guess it was too obvious to go for a Jeopardy! sweep in a QuikSand hosted IWS? As QS commented, I actually don't understand why people didn't do more one-show answering, but so be it.

With all the crap Kathy Griffin gets around here, I thought she might get more votes than that for game show host.

5th place here, and the Seacrest answer screwed me over as well. I had Drew Carey, who actually does a game show right now.

Seacrest does a game show too. I'd classify American Idol as one.
edit: And I'd say he's already known as the Idol host. Last edited by MikeVic : 05-26-2008 at 11:59 AM. |

BTW, glad I didn't go with my first reaction for #6. The game Card Sharks kept jumping into my head, but I went against that because I see Press Your Luck eveytime I flip past the channel.

OK, so we all agree that Seacrest is disqualified. QuikSand, please retabulate and post the corrected results.

I knew I'd be suck at this one, as I didn't think anyone else would go with "Double Dare". Too good an answer not to give, though.

Definitely out of practice. Seacrest was an obvious answer. I'm one of the dummies who split on 1 and 2, going with TPIR and Trebek. I thought with all the nostalgia freaks on here Press Your Luck would do better. And I'm apparently the only fan of Tic Tac Dough.
I too wonder if people really think TPIR would be fun to play. It doesn't look that fun to me, but I know people scream when they're on the show. I always assumed it was because the show appealed to a certain demographic and that they were told that screaming was the best way to get your name called and win. |

Hmm. I just remembered that this wasn't the case. I guessed Family Fued for #4. So in that case... ...the only was The Price if Right would be fun to play is if you got up there and told everyone to STFU as they tried yelling prices at you. Jackasses. I never understood why anyone up there turns to the audience and seeks advice. |

I went Jeopardy! and Bob Barker (which is the opposite of many, I believe). I went with Jeopardy! because it's got a good cross-section of "American" trivia and knowledge. After that, I went with Bob Barker since he recently retired. or....you could just say that I was hedging my bet. |

I knew my showing would be poor. I thought answering price is right for the first few questions would be too obvious. Alas.

wOW, i got the MIJB honors this game.
With all the talk about the "Lets Make a Deal" puzzle a couple weeks ago, I figured that would have been the obvious choice for #6. Figured there would be more Kathy Griffin answers. I knew I was in trouble when I saw I was the only one who chose Deal or No Deal and Survivor. |

Jeopardy doesn't look like fun at all. There's the potential for humiliation, it seems nerve-wracking, plus the buzzers never seem to work.

dola - should say I've been to TPIR and it ain't all that. Never got called down, but the wait just to get into the audience ect. sucked. You get there at like 6 AM to wait in line to get a ticket and # for a show (usually 2 a day) then around 8-9 they hand out the #'s. Then @ 11 you line back up and they write down all your info and give you your name tag...around 12 is the show and then it's over....4 months later it's on TV.

Do they still have that show in Vegas where they play Price is Right every night (with all the favorite games, but less valuable prizes)?
