Two-and-a-half men

So, I never used to watch this show, but now it's on syndication at around the same time I usually eat supper. I have to say that I actually like it and find it funny. I can't believe some of the lines and sex-talk is allowed that early in the evening, but I'm not complaining.

Anyone else like it?

Never seen it, but it wouldn't surprise me if, like how I was with King of Queens, that once I actually do see an episode, I like it a lot.

I have never seen an episode of this show. Based on what I've seen from the commercials, I am pretty much ok with that.

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing last night about all the commercials I've started seeing for this show now that it's in syndication.

The little I've seen of it, it reminds me of all the reasons why I don't watch non-reality TV anymore. It's funny, in a "saw-it-coming-a-mile-away" Jay Leno joke way. When I can finish the one-liners before they happen on the screen, I know I'm either watching the Disney Channel or today's network sitcom.

But I am shocked at how frank the sex talk is, especially since the commercials are on quite often, and even earlier than the show airs.

I thought it seemed overly adult for the time period it's on. I suppose if I was home during the time it airs locally, I might watch it. I don't really have much of an opinion on it right now.

There was one a couple of days ago, where Charlie Sheen's brother is saying something like "so if I slept with you, you'd let me have more control in the house?!? Find then." And then Charlie Sheen says "don't write cheques with your mouth that your ass can't cash." I just burst out. I wasn't expecting that at all.

Terrible, generic sitcom with stale jokes and repetitive stories. Give me The Office any day.

To threadjack, I honestly do not remember the last time I watched something in prime-time that was not a game show, 60 minutes, or a game. I see ads watching stuff on the weekend and not a damn thing interests me.

Thank goodness it's baseball season.

Terrible, terrible show.

Easily better: The Office, Scrubs, It's Always Sunny, How I Met Your Mother

That's without even thinking about it. There are even bad shows better than Two and a Half Men, such as Big Bang Theory.

I'm only about halfway through Season 2 of The Office, and while I think it's pretty good, I realized that I don't laugh at any of the storylines and very little of the actual writing (pretty much just what comes out of Dwight's mouth). My laughter comes more from the mannerisms of the actors and the looks at or towards the camera.

It's one of those shows that I can't see making time for, like Scrubs. But as a comedy in syndication, it's not bad. I think this show took the spot of Everybody Loves Raymond, which I hated.

Turns out, if you watch the show with Charlie Sheen and John Cryer as little kids, it's so funny that absolutely everyone likes it. "One and a Half Men" is like the perfect mix of Garfield Minus Garfield and Muppet Babies.

I watched The Office once, several years ago, and liked it OK. I think I recall it had something to do with a basketball game, maybe? Anyway, I never watched it again. I haven't really considered why.

Like everything else, TV can be quite good in moderation. I just try to find what I enjoy and watch only those shows. It's the sort of mindless, sitting in front of the TV, flipping through channels to see what, if anything, is on that irritates me.

Thanks to TiVO/DVR, this rarely happens. I watch about 4-5 hour long shows (Lost, Heroes, Battle Star Galactica, and usually one more like "Terminator" or "Journeyman") and another 4 or so 30 minute "sitcoms" (Office, 30 Rock, Earl, and The Simpsons), plus the occassional epsiode of the "Daily Show" or "Colbert Report."

Among those shows, college football, NFL football, NHL hockey, and Netflix (including some TV series, like "The Wire" currently), that's more than enough TV. They're all quality shows (in my opinion) and it really doesn't eat up that much time over the course of a week, however, so I don't feel too guilty about any of it.

You have to get past seasons 1 and 2. They are the ones that are almost replicas of the British Office. In Season 3 the American one gets its own storylines.

I disagree. Only season 1 is a replica. Starting with the Dundies (1st episode of season 2), there was a clear shift in tone away from the British style.

My facts may be a little off, but Iu thought there was at least 1 full season that was a near replica.

True to an extent, but the season only had about 8 episodes in it. It's not as if there was a full 20 episodes that were replicas of the original.

Yeah, there were some clunkers this season, but the last one with the deposition was fantastic.

It was just 1 episode really. "Diversity Day" was completely different than anything in the British version. The first season was far more of like the British version in tone, but the second season is when the show really came into its own.

I thought there was a newer thread about the show than this one but if so, I'm not finding it right now.

Media Life Magazine - Production suspended on CBS's 'Men'

Sheen enters rehab, future of most-watched comedy on television in doubt.

The show was okay for the first two, maybe three, seasons. Then it just got stale (such as making the kid dumber as he got older) and the storylines seem a little out in the zone.

One of this idiotic, awful shows - it amazes that me that we live in a world where 2 and a half men is popular, while an Arrested Development gets cancelled (and an Office / 30 Rock gets significantly lower ratings). Just awful.

Those you named may be better written at times but are pretty much filled with unlikable characters and/or actors. That's a tough handicap to overcome when it comes to mass audiences.

Who on those shows would be viewed as unlikeable?

edit: And how can that be your line of reasoning when the show you're referring to that gets a "mass audience" is about a womanizer played by an actor with one of the worst Hollywood reputations out there, complete with known drug use, frequently tapping prostitutes, and being a wife-beater?

Off hand I can't barely think of a character on any of the shows named that I'd say is particularly endearing. I'm the least familiar with Arrested but I can see where at least Bateman could get over with viewers that way. No mistake, I'm not greatly enamored with the 2.5 people either.

The real failure of the shows mentioned, in terms of audience, is pretty simple. They failed to connect with viewers over 35, and that's the bulk of network TV audiences. 2.5 managed to do it & the numbers bear that out. It's actually slipped to the #2 comedy with 18-49's but retains its overall audience lead.
