2008 FOFC Hardcore League

We're back! This is the third year of the FOFC Hardcore League (FYI, The companion football league, FOFC Alternate Rules Football just finished it's 3rd year as well: 2007, 2006, 2005.). The league is a weekly H2H league rather than Roto and we try to get in a slow, live draft so you have time to think about your picks.

Previous Years: 2007, 2006

Who Can Join
Preference goes towards members who were in the league last year. However, there are always some who don't come back so there are open spots. The league will be open exclusively to previous members until noon tomorrow. Then anyone can join. If you weren't in the league last year and want to get on the waiting list, put your name in now as it is first come, first served.

Signing Up
WHEN YOU SIGN UP, PUT A NUMBER NEXT TO YOUR NAME. I have saved a text file to my desktop with 12 numbers that will determine the draft order. Has a bit of an odd pattern to it, but that's Excel and RAND() for you.

Alternatively
Lastly, I know we're not as hardcore as you could be. So, if you want that, Toddzilla has created what looks like a great league:
2008 FOFC Extreme Baseball League

Some rules commentary

One minor change to stats. As Toddzilla mentioned last season, K/9 is redundant with K's tho one is a rate and one a counting stat. Instead, added in quality starts as it's a really good stat to measure the value of a starting pitcher. This gives another positive counting stat to W/SV and K with 2 rate stats of ERA and WHIP, and a negative counting stat in L. I feel this short changes reliever sa little and I'm just not sure how to help that out except by adding holds or blown saves which would very much overvalue RPs. Any thoughts?

Also, I increased a few positions but hopefully they are in proportion so as to not unbalance pitchers and positional players. I added a MI, CI, and OF to go along with the pitching changes (next paragraph). The bench has been increased to 5 from 4 to make up for the additional 5 active players.

Another SP has been added as has been a "P". I'm not sure I like the "P" as that opens up some loophole room but we'll go with it. Last year, I ran two leagues with weekly IP limits and 35 was just fine but 40 was too much. With an extra SP and P, I would think *42* would be just about right as if you have short lived starters, you could use that extra P for SP but with longer guys, you could go RP. Problems with injuries arise, of course, but realistically, even 5 starters should go at least 7 if not 8-10 times per week and average 5 IP per start.

Two years ago, we did daily changes. Last year it was weekly. Any thoughts? I think weekly provides more of a challenge whereas daily is more fun.

Nothing's in stone yet, of course. But the closer we get to the draft, the harder it is to change things. So, any last thoughts before I create a thread later on today?

We're going to have to go with a "quicker" live draft with time limits of maybe 6 hours as 21 players for 12 teams is 252 so that means a lot of players will need to be drafted. I'm also toying with the idea of having the first 15 rounds or so be slow, live draft and the rest be list as we will likely run out of time.

Draft Format

The draft will take place in this thread once the league has been set up. It is a snake draft.

There are 6 hour time limits between the hours of 8am CT and 10pm CT on weekdays. Hopefully we don't have to enforce this but we almost always have to a couple of times during the draft.

Also, a little addendum to keep people checking every night and morning. If you had more than an hour the previous night (the previous pick was made at 9pm), you get 1 hour in the morning (until 9am) to make your pick. If you had less than an hour, you have 2 hours in the morning (until 10am). We have to keep this moving and we need everyone checking every night and every morning if it's near their turn.

On weekends, we'll just go with a standard 6 hours with no morning/evening provision but let's try to keep things moving.

If there are problems in that you know your pick is coming up but you won't be online, submit a list either to myself or to a proxy drafter for you. Otherwise, you will get the next player on Yahoo's list. Maybe pick someone who is on the opposite end of the draft from you so that you likely won't be grabbing from the same pool of players anyways.

*EDIT* Changed Dates since Opening Day is the 25th!
Opening Day is Mar 25th. If the draft is not complete by Thursday March 20th at noon, we will have a quick live draft via AIM to complete the draft on Friday March 21st, starting at 7pm CT. Anyone who won't be able to make that will need to submit a list to me, a proxy, or have a proxy in chat (who is not in the league) to finish out their team.

I hate to lay down some of these rules but we're going to be drafting over 250 players so we need to get it done in a timely fashion.

IF YOU CANNOT KEEP UP WITH THIS SCHEDULE, DO NOT JOIN.

Lathum, you have been added to the waiting list in post 2. I'm pretty sure you'll have a spot unless everyone decides to return.

I forgot to add people who had posted to the other thread:

Returners:

Toddzilla

Waiting List:
DeTox Rox

If you want to retain your spot in the order above, you need to post a number by noon tomorrow
. Otherwise, you guys get bumped. But you did post first about it so you go where you are above to be fair. We should have more than enough spots for everyone.

Thanks for the update.

That's going to be one heck of a league. I'm curious to see how it goes, tho I'm not sure I have time for it, myself.

Ok, everyone has been added to the list in post 2 up to this point.

I went with 11 for you since, in theory, 2 and 3 are claimed by people on the waiting list and I'm trying not to double up for confusion.

Also, join up in the league if you want. You're guaranteed a spot since you were in last year (and didn't go inactive).

Had a minor update. Didn't realize there was a Japanese game this year on the 25th for a kindof opening day. So, the draft will have to be done by the 21st or there will be a quick draft that night (the 21st is a Friday) to finish.

Quality starts is a nebulous, somewhat manufactured attempt to measure quality - and it fails.

Add Innings Pitched. It rewards starters who go long in games (i.e. the good ones) and throws a bone to decent relievers. IMO its the most underrated fantasy stat we have.

FYI- I probably won't be able to check this again until this afternoon/evening. Remember, at noon, if you are on the waiting list, you can join, provided you adhere to the order in post 2 and subsequent posts in the next 2 hours from returning members.

But how does that help in a weekly H2H league where there's an innings limit. Either you get full points for IP or you get 0 pitching points.

Well, I guess not. Now that I think about it, it rewards people for adding to their counting stats. You can qualify and still get more IPs. However, it does bias the category towards whoever has more 2 start guys that week.

With IP, the league would almost certainly have to be weekly changes so that people don't just load up towards the end of the week with WW fodder. Any thoughts on weekly vs daily changes? Anyone?

Personally I like the strategy aspect of weekly changes vs daily. I have more time than most (I'm guessing) to play with daily changes, but if not every owner can have that sort of access it's definitely better for the league to go weekly imho.

I'm guessing you went with the more Michigan themed team name...

Also, Red Sux and Exploding Methlabs, not sure who is who between Celeval, TazFTW, and allpro10050. Hell, Exploding Methlabs could be a fine Kansas City fan, for all I know, considering KC's standing as a meth lab capital

As such I don't know who hasn't signed up. Either way, there is one free spot open right now to whoever signs up and posts in this thread. If the other spot isn't claimed by the third of the three above, then it will also open up at noon tomorrow to whoever else signs up and posts in the thread.

Provided we get a full league by tomorrow night, I'll post the draft order and we will start tomorrow night/Wednesday morning.

Also, sounds like weekly roster changes is the preferred setting so I'll leave it at that.

Any thoughts on IP vs QS or another pitching stat? I've changed it over to IP unless there are compelling arguments to anything else.

Someone should start up a Dusty Baker league where you have roto stats like "HR, K (they're manly), BB (negative), RBI, RBI, RBI, and MI (middle infielder starts)"

I'm in as the Pool Parties (tentative name...I'm in a law school league with my team name from last season, don't want to get confused).

I'll take #1

Dola--I just assumed since there were open spots in the league, that there was still room. Sifting through the posts in here and trying to figure out if everyone on the waiting list got a spot proved to be too confusing. If I took someone's spot, I will delete my team to make room...just let me know.

Whoops. I completely botched that last night when sifting through teams.

So, now I have two teams who I'm not sure they're attached to:

Exploding Methlabs (oneoutlawtorn)
Red Sux (yankpats)

One is celeval, the other is DeToxRox but I'm not sure who is who.

Also, everyone check the second post and make sure I have your information right and correct me if I'm wrong.

And now, the draft order...

3. Blacksburg Transit (Todd Akers), Toddzilla, 11

12. Lathums Brew Crew (lathum85), Lathum, 10

This will be updated in the draft post. I still need team names for DeTox Rox and Celeval.

The settings are now set, so to speak. We will be going with those roster spots, those statistical categories, and weekly changes.

Lastly, time to go back over the draft as it's a pretty rigorous schedule. From the draft post:

Quote:

So make sure to check every evening and morning. Also, remember, if we aren't done by Thurs Mar 20th at noon, there will be a quick live chat via AIM on the evening of Friday Mar 21st (7pm CT) so make arrangements for that.

I have added everyone who has an AIM profile into Trillian for me so I can try to remind people when it's their turn. But I have this pesky "work" thing that gets in my way so no guarantees.

Also, anyone who doesn't have AIM and would like to get reminders, PM me with an IM account name.
