The National Football League is calling KFC’s chicken dance challenge to Super Bowl players a "textbook case of ambush marketing 101."

KFC arrived at the donation amount by calculating the cost of three seconds of a 30-second Super Bowl commercial, which is running $2.67 million for advertisers.

The donation will be given to Colonel’s Scholars, which provides college scholarships.chicken dance challenge to Super Bowl players a “textbook case of ambush marketing 101.”

And players who cross the line in their clucking could even face fines from the league.

As part of a national promotion for its hot wings, the chicken chain will donate $260,000 to charity in the name of the first New England Patriots [team stats] or New York Giants player who performs the “wing flapping” portion of the chicken dance for at least three seconds in the end zone during the championship game. The offer also applies to the first celebrity Super Bowl performer who does the cheesy wedding standard on stage.

“KFC is not affiliated with the NFL in any fashion, so this is a textbook case of ambush marketing 101,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said. “There are many different companies that try to draft off the excitement of the Super Bowl that have no right to any of the activities going on.”

Players can celebrate during the Super Bowl as they typically do after scoring a touchdown, but any player who tries to incorporate a KFC product placement into the game could face fines.

“We’re not going to play the role of Simon Cowell and critique dances,” McCarthy said. “But if a player acted in a way that was a reflection of a corporate message, then we’d have to take a look at it.”

Group chicken dances also will not be tolerated, since group celebrations in the end zone are considered unsportsmanlike.

Agents of some players already have contacted KFC about the promotion, according to KFC spokesman Rick Maynard, who wouldn’t name names. KFC also plans to reach out to players most likely to score a touchdown.

It has a detailed marketing plan in place if the stunt is successful, Maynard said, and the details will be part of a post-game KFC announcement.
