Touchdown Jesus Avenged!
ESPN Anchorwoman Dana Jacobson Suspsended for Jesus Rant
Posted on: January 23rd, 2008 bumpshack.com ESPN anchorwoman Dana Jacobson has been suspended by ESPN for one week for her bashing and hate filled rant against Jesus Christ. The comments took place at a roast for fellow ESPN radio hosts Mike & Mike (Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic). Jacobson started out on ESPNEWS and has since co-hosted Cold Pizza and ESPN First Take. So what could Jacobson had said that was that bad? Well this is exactly what she said: “F*** Notre Dame,” “F*** Touchdown Jesus” and finally “F*** Jesus.”

Why the fuck would anyone hold a roast for Mike and Mike anyway?

If ESPN was smart (and learned from the Golf magazine) they would air Jesus Christ Superstar instead of ESPN First Take as a proper apology.

I was thinking about posting this on the "Lynch" thread. See what those people thought about this suspension and see if there was a similar feeling that those who are offended by the speech need to chill (personally, I think both are business decisions and fine... hell, you can really say Fuck Jesus if you are an on air personality without recourse).

So, if you were among the crowd that continue to say that the word "lynch" is not a hate-filled term in modern parlance, because you can find other uses of it... aren't you pretty much obligated to find this use of the name Jesus inoffensive, as the name is clearly in fairly wide use by any number of people, past and present, other than one religious figure?

Maybe she was talking about John Turturro's character from "The Big Lebowski".

Yes, it is. A suspension is perfectly appropriate for an employee that says something this stupid and offensive at a public event. She should have known better. |

I agree with the suspension if only for the reason that you would expect your employees to be smarter than to say something like that.

It's a ROAST!!
The whole point of a roast is people say off the wall shit to get a rise out of the guest (s) of honor. Anyone who watches a roast and gets offended by something said they need to go watch little house on the prarie If you don't like it then stick to sports. It's not like she said it during an episode of college gameday. |

Just like their is a difference between being funny at a roast and being mean, there is a difference between being edgy and being offensive. She crossed that line.

Just about every roast I've ever seen has had incredibly offensive material. It's part of the context of a roast. Most of the roasts where Sammy Davis Jr. was the target, the monologues contained non-stop racial and religious offending statements. There's a reason that up until recently most roasts have been conducted behind closed doors to an invited target audience that understands the context.

I read that she was shitfaced when she said all of that. I think she needs to take her aggression out in other ways....and videotape it.

The issue wasn't so much what she said, rather she was completely smashed out of her head and made a complete ass of herself, having to be escorted off the stage. Deadspin, et. al., have covered this extensively.

Line? Roasts are meant to be completely offensive. That's what makes them funny. One of the reasons why roasts have, until recently, been a completely closed-doors affair.

I find it inoffensive, but not for the same reason you've outlined. I find it inoffensive because I do not allow other people's statements to anger or offend me unless they are used by legitimate organizations (i.e. government, companies which require government-issued licenses, etc.) to propagandize or incite action which would offend me. I say legitimate because you simply cant stop every crazy from using something out of context or in a malignant form, when the original intention was not malignant, and true to the defined usage. I said the word lynch is not an obvious word with racial implications to everybody(certainly to some). And the reason is that(I believe) as generations pass, the actual slang usage of words does not necessarily go with them...but their original definition and/or connotation(sp?) does. And if you cannot go with the definition of a word, with no other compelling reason to believe otherwise, then at what point do you make the cutoff for potentially offensive words? Not a question to you, mostly rhetorical. |

when i think of the word lynch, the immediate image i get is not of blacks being hanged, but angry townsfolk with torches and pitchforks looking to capture Frankenstein.
i'm being 100% honest here. |

I figure that Jesus Christ can take care of himself...even if he can't hit a curve-ball. |

Indeed, I have been to a roast or two and written some gags for my boss on at least two occassions I remember. And there are definitely lines. For example, you don't make fun of a guy because his wife left him for the pool boy last month. Not funny. At least not yet. Maybe in a few years when he is remarried and happy again. His kid being killed in a car accident isn't funny either.
Cartman -- Sammy Davis, Jr.?!! Really? I'm not sure roasts that occurred more than 25-30 years ago are the best benchmark. I think we all know that things that may have been said and accepted then aren't -- for good reasons -- acceptable today. Dean-o probably also pulled one of the waitreses onto his lap, too. I'd like to think we've learned something from those days. Anyway, Jacobson was not fired, she was suspended. She said something stupid at the podium at a company function -- which was also a charity event, I believe -- and she has been disciplined for it. I see nothing at all wrong with this. |

Like it has been mentioned before, it is all in the context of the roast. You obviously felt like some material was off limits for the roast your were at, so you didn't use that material. There is a definite lineage from roasts performed 25 to 30 years ago to the roasts of today. The Friar's Club is still considered the standard bearer for celebrity roasts. The types of material used today definitely pays homage to the past celebrity roasts.
