Welcome to the FOFC Historical Date Draft

How to play:

If you want to play, PM me. Some time tomorrow, I'll randomly select ten players. (And by "random", I mean pretty much random...) The draft will be conducted via the forum, in this thread. When it's your turn to draft, you post, ideally with a brief note about the reason for your choice. If you won't be around, you PM someone else your picks in advance to keep things moving. The draft is a serpentine draft, which is a fancy way of saying that the order reverses each round. Draft order will be determined randomly before we start.

How to win:

The fun here comes more from the draft itself than from actually winning, but just in case it matters: Once the draft is done, we'll hold a vote and let FOFC choose the winner. Hopefully there will be some interesting side discussions on why a date or event was significant. Some will be obvious, but others more obscure.

The teams:

You will draft a "team" of twelve dates filling once from each of the following categories and having ONE date in each month.

Categories are -

Sports
Military Event
Natural Disaster
Entertainment (Non-fiction)
Scientific Event
Fictional Event (Date appearing in ficitional material)
Television Moment
Politics
Birthday/Death
19th Century
Pre-17th century Europe
Potluck

- If there is an event that spans days, you must pick one day.
- All events must be historical proven to have occured on the date you provide or the consensus must be that they occured on said date. No fictional dates other than the fictional category.

An example on the fictional event would be July 3rd, Aliens attack in 'Independence Day'.

Any date picked can not have a date picked either 1 day behind or 1 day ahead. If someone picks Jan 31st, Jan 30th and Feb 1st are out of play. Everything is in the same 'year' so, December 31st wouldn't eliminate Jan 1st

A few notes:
The draft is open to everyone -- observers are welcome. Discussion of picks is encouraged.

In general, it's considered very poor form to suggest picks during the draft -- the equivalent of being the guy who doesn't play poker but sits at the rail and shouts out to get attention. However, it will happen. If you're the sort of person who thinks you'd be really, really bothered by this, do yourself a favor and don't play.

In order for the draft to be fun, it has to move quickly. That means that if you will not be checking the forums frequently, you should send an advance list of picks to a partipant or observer to choose for you. If you are not willing to send a list for your picks to keep the draft moving, you should not sign up to play. Players who cause delays in the draft will be replaced.

If someone makes an invalid pick, the commish (me) will explain why the pick doesn't work and that team will pick again. However, if other teams have already made their picks, those picks will count (in order to avoid having to redo stretches of the draft). So if you try to get tricky with your picks and get burned, don't blame me.

Draft order is by the team numbers above.

Sticking with the 'can't use a day before or after a date' rule. (No negative comments so, will go with that.

Barkeep is on the clock. Figure there are 5 really recognizable dates that will go in the first few picks.

In hindsight probably could have just more called this a Historical Event draft with the constraints being the dates/months

I know I'm not drafting - but rules question.. are multiple picks in the same year allowed?

Yep. Only limit is 1 pick per month and the date limitation (If someone takes Jan 2nd, then Jan 1st, 2nd and 3rd are out of play).

So, if someone wants to load up on the year 1583, have at it...

Ok there were two different dates that seemed worthy of a #1 pick, however I'm I couldn't find a good category for my second idea. So I'm picking July 4, 1776 and putting it in Politics.

I don't think there's any confusion, but I am talking about the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on that date .

Please explain July 4, 1776

(Only asking so we keep a theme of everyone describing the date and why they picked it, even for the obvious ones like this)

I would of used July 4th because of the movie Independence Day but, hey.. if you want to use it for the Declaration of Independence signing...

I'm going to pick exclusively Canadian events and try to be the first person to ever get zero votes in one of these. Wait until I choose Canada burning down the White House in 1814 as my top pick.

There aren't many dates that are known by a single letter.

1.2: Military Event - June 6, 1944 (D-Day, Battle of Normandy).

I guess there are more known dates, but most fall into the same categories, so I will go a little off the beaten track.

I had my eye on that one, hoped that it would slip to me. I would've taken the 21st and the "One Small Step..." line and put it on TV.

If we're drafting dates, might as well take the one that will live in infamy...

1.4 - December 7, 1941 - The attack on Pearl Harbor (Military)

I have a couple ideas for that category.
I choose the 4th of July because it is date all that known. I think the US is a pretty special place and that is seen as the beginning of the country. Not to mention it is, in my opinion, one of the greatest pieces of political rhetoric every.

Radii selects - Nov 22, 1963 - President John F Kennedy is assassinated (birth/death).

Not his comment but, good choice. Things sure went a different direction in the U.S after that.

The Moon Landing and Pearl Harbor were has #1 and #2 choices.

NOTE: There might be a delay for Bucc at #7. He is going via email and I'm not sure he has my email addy yet.

Cool, I'll take it even if it was my 3rd choice. July 4th was probably the easy consensus #1, but to me the Moon Landing was a easy #2, I can't imagine that there's anything else that will go in that category that will evoke similar emotion or importance with the group here. All very good picks so far IMO.

I like 1.1 and 1.2 a lot but not so hot about 1.3 and 1.4 simply because I could have not recalled those dates off the top of my head. Definitely significant events but date worthy?

Mustang: How much flexibility do we have to change our placement? So, for instance, could I later move my July 4th to Potporri? Or are we locked into the slot we draft it in?

You couldn't remember the date of the attack on Pearl Harbor?

I had the 21st for the Moon Landing stuck in my head, not the 20th.

My mistake, that's why I asked for a list. The two that I didn't like as much were the Apollo and Kennedy (whatever picks they were). I knew the month and year.

I'm not sure which category this goes in, so I guess it will be my potluck choice:

1.6 Potluck -- September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attack

Still waiting on the total ramifications, but it certainly changed the country.

I had actually forgotten about the Declaration of Independence! 9/11 was my number 1 all along.

Yeah, 9/11 is a tough one to figure in this draft.

On the one hand, it's probably the most recent event that will be picked, and we're still living the consequences. On the other hand, and without turning this into a debate thread, it's somewhat difficult to guage it's historical significance compared to some of the other events that will be picked.

That said, it's a date draft, and that's certainly a very famous date.

9/11 was going to be my pick. However, I couldn't find a place where I liked it. I was going to slot it in television before deciding to go with July 4th with its natural slot in Politics.

That's my thought. It is certainly far less significant than the Declaration of Independence (without which it has no significance whatsoever) as well as some other dates that have not yet been mentioned. I think when you look at final rosters that 9/11 will have been chosen too early.

If it's a controversy about what category something fits in, then we usually just let the voters decide.

There are also some rather obvious picks that have the issue of the date not being agreed on. I think that's another one where you just have to accept that if you use it, some voters will slap you down. Others will reward you. You takes your chances.

So... just pick already, Bucc.
