You are one to talk with Kansas in your top 6, and Cincy that high. I don't see how you can call anyone out with votes like those.

Yeah, my parser just caught that. I thought one might be South Carolina, but he has them at 20.

As I've done in the past, I'll remove the second listing, and move every other team up one, and #25 will be blank.

My bad. My entry was based on actual results this year not on name reputation. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

I have no problems with the way people vote. We all take different factors into it. I for one use my last week's poll as the starting point and move teams up and down based on wins. Then I look at the teams around them and think in my mind if they could beat the team in front and behind them.

Look at who Kansas has beaten...best team K-State. Cincy's best win is Rutgers. Yea sounds like top 10 material to me.

it's good to have a poll with people voting on different factors. Mine is somewhat of a hybrid between on-field performance, who I think would win head to head, and then some kind of factor that parses out unimpressive teams, such as Wisconsin, who I don't think is really as good as others.

So, you're saying that Kansas' unbeaten record of whitewashing 4 no-names and squeaking past K-State is more impressive than Missouri's wins over actual teams such as Illinois and Nebraska.

Please defend.

To be honest, the Missouri/Kansas vote was very close. Could have gone either way. Kansas last week won on the road against a somewhat competent opponent. Missouri hasn't done that yet. If they can beat Oklahoma this week this would obviously put them past Kansas. By the way, don't call Nebraska an actual team. Unless by actual you're saying they're not a make-believe team. I can agree with that. But they're not a good football team.

bsak -

You just stated your process as one where you start with early season bias and move from there. That's fine. At least it's an ethos. But your question about Cincinnati is funny. What has Southern Cal done this year? [Mike Gundy]Idaho is garbage. Nebraska is garbage. Washington State is garbage. Washington is not very good. Stanford is garbage - whoops, lost that one.[/Mike Gundy]

sooner333 - Who has Oklahoma beaten this year? Miami isn't very good and Texas isn't very good. Oklahoma lost their only road game against a decent team. That's Top 4 material?

I actually think Washington is pretty good. I've seem them play a few times and I don't think they are too bad.

Let's look at Cincy...Directional East Missour State, Oregon State (nice and convincing win saw the game), Miami (OH), Marshall, SDSU, Rutgers...

I think USC has a lot of talent. Call it bias or whatever but I beleve they are still one of the top 10-15 teams in the country, same with Florida even with 2 losses. When USC split the title in 2003, they lost a game to a 6 loss Cal team. Good teams slip up. If they are to lose to Cal, Oregon, or to another team they would drop like a rock IMO.

I start fresh each week, basically make a list of every team that could possibly be included, and think about how impressive their combination of wins and losses is.

For me I base my rankings on my feelings of the team not necessarily on their results.

Face it Florida probably hangs 50 on Cincinnatti or Kansas, I dont care that they have 2 losses.

Agreed! As would Oklahoma and that is how I vote. I try to favor teams with lesser losses but I mostly try to rank them in order of who would win the game in my opinion. There was no need for Huckleberry to call anyone out on who they voted for. I believe Oklahoma is ranked #6 in the API and until the loss to Colorado were right there with LSU as the most dominant looking team.

You wont reason with him on this...K-state beat his beloved Texas team, so he will overrate them and anyone who beats them.

No, he wants to criticize everyone else for their ratings, he needs to justify his own. Kansas at #6 is far more ridiculous than USC or OU in the top 10.

Wow, that's funny. I overrate Kansas State so much that they're not in my Top 25.

I did not criticize everyone for their ratings, I criticized the homer OU and USC votes. Blade made a rather pathetic attempt to accuse me of homerism in return, but that's just entertaining considering that I am one of the minority of voters that don't have Texas in their poll. To be honest, having Texas in the Top 25 right now is perhaps more ridiculous than the OU and USC votes. There is absolutely no justification for having Texas in the Top 25 aside from name recognition and previous years' performances. Those things should have no bearing on a Top 25 for this season.

As for the Missouri/Kansas thing, you stated that Nebraska would pound any of Kansas' opponents so far this year and I pointed out why that was probably not true. Now you've got another question you want me to address. While I recognize that you'll probably come up with a new question for longer than I'll be willing to continue this conversation, I will mention again that Missouri has not won a meaningful road game while Kansas has. Missouri's win over Illinois is certainly, on its face, a better win than any Kansas has had. But that was at a neutral site while Kansas has won on the road.

It seems to me that much of your criticism might be based on the assumption that my poll is like bsak's and so many other voters'. However, I do not simply move teams down based on losses. Just because Team A is behind Team B this week doesn't mean that they will be again next week even if both teams win. In fact, I can guarantee you that if Missouri beats Oklahoma tomorrow they will be ahead of Kansas in next week's poll, even assuming Kansas handles Baylor. They may move multiple spots ahead of Kansas. Kansas may drop after beating Baylor based on the performance of other teams they're currently ahead of. My entire poll may look completely different. As st.cronin does, I reevaluate the entire season each week.

I also attempt to weigh what a team has accomplished and the team's strength relatively evenly. In order to help with that I do use my computer ratings as an input as well as what my eyes tell me. My ratings produce multiple sets (like Sagarin's) that tell me different things. Thinking that I can consider the thousands of games in college football each year in total would be silly. That's what a computer is for. However, the computer only sees final scores, and can't watch the games. The computer says that Southern Cal shouldn't even be in the Top 25. But watching them play I can see that they do belong in the rankings and that they're unlikely to play as poorly overall and especially at the QB position as they did against Stanford. So the computer is just one of many inputs.

As for the different ratings types, Kansas has a high predictive value but not nearly as high a results value. Oklahoma is the same but at a lower level. Meanwhile, Missouri has a high results value for what they've accomplished but not nearly as high a predictive value. All of these things will become more clear as the season progresses. Teams will play only their seventh game this week and because of that rankings should be anything but static this early in the year. And I am not going to use previous seasons' results in a 2007 Top 25 poll. I am only going go off what the teams have done this year despite what I may think I know about them based on last year or previous years. Using that information only biases a poll for this year and results in things like Texas being in the rankings.
