TCY Dynasty: Passing Yardage Challenge
Since I'm absolutely bored at work tonight, I thought it would be fun to try a TCY dynasty.
Primary goals of the dynasty: 1) Get the most passing yards as possible for my QB. (In random tests, I've been able to get 5900. I'd like to break 6000). 2) Test this insane new defense. (Designed to create more passing attempts on both sides.) 3) I might care about winning, too. I looked for a team with low prestige to make it somewhat challenging, but also needed a conference without a championship game (so there will be year to year consistency on stats) and one with reasonable competition. I'm gonna go ahead and use Temple. I'll try to schedule current Big East teams like Louisville and South Florida as my OOC games. House rules: *Set on the highest level (All-star). *I cannot offer scholarships to anyone on defense. Walk-ons only. Hey chemistry genius? Yep, you're gonna start at LB. *The few good players I have now cannot be redshirted. The sooner this is all my team, the better. *Sol8 is located in Montana, far away from me. *No redshirting. Let's see how many freshman awards we can win. *That's about it. No restrictions on recruiting/academics.

Here is the insane defense:
*Run expectation set to 99 in all situations *Goal Line package set to 99. All other packages set to 0. Both blitzing categories set to 99. *100% man to man coverage. *Scout recommended blitzing position %'s. Coverage set at 100% man to man. Hopefully, this will compel the opposing teams to pass. Whether they are successful at it or not, this will increase the number of plays in the game, which will increase the number of pass attempts by my QB. On offense, we will be throwing every down (although the AI will probably still call the occassional run, I've set all situations to 0% running.) I've also increased 4th down attempts to 99, and lowered running inside the twenty to 0. Passing distances will be: 15-55-25-3-2.

Here are your 2004 Temple Owls. Sophomore Jermaine Pence will get the first crack at the total yardage, although I think he'll come closer to the NCAA record for INT's.

Pence was injured for two games and only managed 2035 passing yards. he did throw only 19 INT's, much less than I had expected. We did lead the nation in pass attempts, which is a good sign for the future.

Not a terrible recruiting year, considering I had nothing to offer. I expect Bates to start immediately and look for improved WR play.

Your 2005 Temple Owls. Not happy with my QB recruit, but he'll have to do. The WR's and C look very good, though.

Much better season than last. True freshman Bates played much better than I expected and had some huge games (two 400 yard days) along the way. Once again led the nation in pass attempts. When we finally get some good personnel in the passing game, should see some fireworks.

I went for broke this recruiting season with mixed results. I landed a blue chip QB along with a very good G and WR, but not anyone else in the top 1000. Hopefully my academics will be solidified by this season and I'll be able to take advantage for a more balanced recruiting class.

*Our overall academic reputation has moved up to 23rd, with top 10's in several subjects. This should bode well for recruiting. *The dynasty strategy allows me to cut some corners with staff. The scouts I only need to be good at evaluating offensive positions, and with my DC I don't have to worry about his development ratings, just his playcalling and injury abilities. *The style of my passing offense seems to do a good job of limiting INT's. While 15 INT's seems like alot, it's not that bad when you throw 487 passes. *We had 4 rushing yards last season. That's way too much. Gonna have to talk to the OC about that. *In the preseason rankings, we move back up to 86th overall and 5th in the Big East. *One aspect of this dynasty that will be difficult is all the angry defensive players that won't have scholarships.

Your 2006 Temple Owls...
Rayburn will clearly get the start, and it's doubtful I will look for a QB in the next class, unless he suffers a serious injury. I'm thinking we can break 3000 yards this season and maybe get to 5 wins. A bowl game would be a great acheivement. Code:

Well, we cracked 3000 yards, but it happened at the price of a ton of INT's. Yikes. We also had a tough year with only 2 wins. But who cares about all that? We're just looking for yardage. We moved up to 2nd in completions and 15th in passing yardage. Still a long way from my goal of 6000.

*Unfortunately, we'll have to go with a new OC this year, which could stifle the progress we've made in the passing game. *We have moved up to #14 in Academic Reputation, with a top 10 ranking in 9 subjects. Hopefully, this will finally impress some recruits. *The roster strength screen gives us good marks at QB (31st), WR (54th), C (5th!), and G (24th). The Tackles are abysmal and listed near the bottom. A must need in recruiting this year. No point in checking any other positions. *In the preseason rankings, we have fallen back down to #107 overall and #6 in the Big East.

Well, we improved passing yardage for the 4th straight year, almost breaking the 4000 mark this season. Thankfully the INT's dropped off a little bit eventhough the TD's stayed the same. I think we would have done better, but we had some problems with WR injuries and of course pass protection. Rayburn was dropped 60 times this season, actually an increase from last year.

What an excellent recruiting season! We finally landed two big time Tackles, picked up three good WR's, got another great Guard, and even landed the #4 RB in the country. Hope he likes catching out of the backfield, because that's all he's gonna be doing for us. I'll look to land my replacement for Rayburn in next year's class.

*Overall Academic is up to 9th, and we are now top 20 in everything we offer, including top 10 in 23 subjects. I should be getting some great recruiting classes now. *Roster Strength rankings getting better. This year: QB (9th), WR (31st), C (9th), G (16th), T (82nd). The Tackle ranking looks awful, but that's because my two starters are very green and it's still 20 spots higher than last year. *We actually move up in the preseason rankings to 105th overall and remain 6th in the Big East. Don't lose faith! We're turning it around! *This is the last season for my original recruiting class, and their last chance to go to a bowl game. Of that original group, Center Terry Buchanan and Guard Vincent Walton have been the best, although WR Roosevelt Ferguson seems primed for a breakout year if he can stay healthy.

And here are your 2008 Temple Owls.
At 72/83, JJ Rayburn is one of the best QB's in the country. The question is if he finally has enough protection and the right weapons around him. Code:

You're right. It did get interesting as the offense finally broke out in a big way. We crossed the 5000 yard mark this season, and if we could've got to a bowl game, would have been around 5400-5500 yards, not that far from our goal. We also get one more season of JJ Rayburn, who was the runner up in Heisman voting eventhough he was on a 3-8 team. Not only that, but Sophomore WR Grant Forbes also had an amazing season, earning him 1st Team All-American honors. I listed Rayburn's game logs next to the scores for the individual games below:

And now time to say goodbye to my original recruiting class...
QB Colin Bates (#633 Overall, #52 QB) Colin started as a true freshman and all things considered he had a decent year. He actually led us to our highest win total to date and threw more TD's than INT's. Since then, he's been replaced by JJ Rayburn and has only attempted 48 passes in the last two years. He actually has one year of eligibility left since he did not play a single down in 2008, but I listed him here because he was part of that recruiting class. Honors: Big East Top Offensive Freshman (2005) RB Stanley Linquist (Unranked Overall, #86 RB) Stanley started 21 games over 4 years and was a pretty good sport about the offensive system. He caught 80 passes for 595 yards and 2 TD's in his career. WR Roosevelt Ferguson (#527 Overall, #48 WR) Despite his low ranking, Roosevelt filled out pretty quickly and was a solid contributor when healthy. Unfortunately, that was not often during his sophomore and junior years when he only played 11 games total, but he rebounded with a solid senior season, just edging out a 1000 yard season. His final career numbers were 215 catches, 2649 yards, and 21 TD. Honors: National Freshman Team (2005), All-Big East 2nd Team (2005), All-Big East 2nd Team (2008) WR Richie Walker (#687 Overall, #61 WR) Walker was never a standout, but he put up decent numbers over the years, especially when asked to fill in for a depleted receiving corps in 2007. The talent started flowing in and he only saw limited action in his senior year. Still pretty good career numbers of 178 catches, 2188 yards, and 10 TD. C Terry Buchanan (#240 Overall, #17 C) Eventually became one of the best Centers in the country and was a solid starter for us all four years, although he struggled a bit in his junior year when he allowed 13 sacks. His overall sack% was still only 1.3% including a 0.9 in his senior year. Also a very durable starter, participating in almost 60 plays a game during his senior year. G Timothy Battle (Unranked Overall, #100 G) Battle struggled mightily his first two seasons and was benched as a sophomore. However, he finally started to reach his potential and became a great hidden gem from this class. Filled out to an 80 in pass blocking and had a sack% of 1.2 in his senior year. G Vincent Walton (#610 Overall, #57 G) Four year starter but never fully reached his potential and was surpassed by Battle at the end. Career sack rating of 1.9% was just not good enough. T Earnest Abell (#907 Overall, #77 T) Desperate last minute offer because everyone else had turned me down. never started a game in four years and didn't play a down last year, so will have one season of eligibility left. T Drew Lyons (#703 Overall, #53 T) Developed to an 83 in pass blocking, but had trouble in the very difficult assignment of LT in an all pass offense. Career sack% of 2.5 Also worth mentioning are walk on defensive players OLB Kent Thompson and S Vince Cain, both of whom started for 4 years and made the All-Big East team as Seniors.

Preseason Notes:
*Academic ranking is up to 8th overall and we are 14th or better in every subject. *Preseason rankings have us at 96th overall and 6th in the Big East. *Rankings look very ugly for us this year: QB (5th), WR (46th, but 4th in reserves), C (105th, ouch), G (30th), T (104th). This is mostly because the guys are very green. Hopefully they will develop over the course of the year. *I don't have a QB to replace Rayburn, so that will be the primary goal of this recruiting class. I might make multiple offers, which I rarely do.

Here are the 2009 Temple Owls. This roster isn't quite as strong as I expected it to be, but that's mostly due to players being underdeveloped. The exception is true freshman Dana Butler, who already looks great and will be the #2 receiver next to returning All-American Grant Forbes.

Now that we're finally getting the yardage, I'm gonna switch to a brief game by game summary.
Week 1 In the search to replace JJ Rayburn, we've offered scholarships to both the #2 and #4 QB's in the nation, both of whom seem good fits for the program. Temple at Eastern Michigan Our hopes of making a bowl game do not look so good, as Rayburn struggles out of the gate with a mere 362 yards against Eastern Michigan. His 3 picks certainly didn't help and the walk-on defense got blitzed. The bright spot was freshman Dana Butler who debuted with 120 yards receiving. Eastern Michigan 38, Temple 17 JJ Rayburn: 25-44-362-2-3 Dana Butler: 9-110-1 Grant Forbes: 3-38-0

Week 2
Central Florida at Temple We put on a show for the 57,700 fans that attended this one. The defense actually showed up, playing inspired against the pass and limiting the Golden Knights to 262 total yards. On the other side of the ball, JJ Rayburn had a field day spreading the ball around to his various weapons, ending with a 478 yard, 5 TD performance. Temple 55, Central Florida 24 JJ Rayburn: 38-55-478-5-1 Forbes: 9-139-2 Butler: 5-62-1

Week 3
Temple at Navy The defense wasn't so good in this one, giving up 200 yards on the ground, but even more astounding was the day Navy's QB had. He only attemptes 8 passes int he game, but he completed 7 of them for 178 yards. That's a 22.2 YPA, folks. Perhaps even more amazing than that is that we managed to win the game. It was a grand shootout, but Rayburn's 594 passing yards, including 3 TD passes in the 4th quarter, led us to victory. Week 4
Central Michigan at Temple This was one we badly needed to get to a bowl game, and it looked good as a Rayburn TD put ups up 24-21 entering the 4th quarter. Then Central Michigan scored 42 (not a typo) points in the 4th quarter to win in a 63-32 blowout. Rayburn put up alot of yards again, but still below pace for a 6,000 yard season. Final Score: Central Michigan 63, Temple 32 JJ Rayburn: 36-68-492-4-2 Grant Forbes: 10-100-0 Dana Butler: 10-125-1 Calvin Copeland: 8-170-2 Race to 6,000 Update (through 4 games) JJ Rayburn: 1928 yards, 16 TD, 6 INT Avg. Per Game: 482.00 Last Season Avg.: 460.09 Avg. needed (without Bowl): 545.45 Avg. needed (with Bowl): 500.00

West Virginia at Temple Ouch, that's all I got to say. The final score and Rayburn's stats say it all. Final Score: West Virginia 87, Temple 17 JJ Rayburn: 4-21-29-0-2 Cornelius McNeill (even at a 9 the AI benched Rayburn): 18-32-265-1-5 Dana Butler: 5-123-1 Calvin Copeland: 4-61-0 Grant Forbes: 2-18-0 Race to 6,000 Update (through 5 games) JJ Rayburn: 1957 yards, 16 TD, 8 INT Avg. Can you update the receiver yearly stats as you go along? Will be interesting to see if you can get a WR Heisman candidate!

Week 6
A much needed bye week. Also we get some much needed good news after last week's slaughter. QB Zach Fields, the #4 QB in the country and #26 recruit overall has committed to Temple. That's my only commitment so far but I've still got offers out to 3 WR, a Center, 3 Guards, and 3 Tackles.

Week 7
#5 Notre Dame (5-0) at Temple (2-3) Rayburn gets off to a good start with two first quarter TD passes and we have an early 14-7 lead. Unfortunately, early in the 2nd quarter, Rayburn falls to a serious injury (on a play where Notre Dame was offsides. Bastards!). The injury is a torn triceps muscle and his college career is over. Seems like the game would be over, but the team plays inspired in honor of Rayburn. McNeill leads a beautiful TD drive early in the 3rd quarter. Then on a 4th down play later int he 3rd, he also falls to an injury and 5th year Senior Colin Bates, who hasn't played a snap in two years, comes into the game. The game heads into OT tied 24-24. In the 1st OT, it is Senior Kendall Groh (a nursing major!) that comes up with a huge sack on 3rd down and forces the fumble! Turnover! On our first play in overtime, Bates finds Dana Butler for a 25 yard TD pass and the goalposts are coming down!!! Final Score: Temple 30, Notre Dame 24 JJ Rayburn 12-16-165-2-0 (162-272-2122-18-8) Cornelius McNeill 22-35-212-1-0 Colin Bates 11-17-166-1-0 Combined QB Game Total: 45-68-543-4-0 Grant Forbes 13-200-0 (45-587-3) Dana Butler 13-143-3 (51-743-8) Calvin Coplenad 7-93-1 (38-659-4) Race to 6,000 Update (through 5 games): The race to 6000 is over, but it will be itneresting to see how close our combined QB totals will come. Combined QB Total: 2864 yards, 21 TD, 13 INT Avg. Per Game: 477.33 Last Season Avg.: 460.09 Avg. needed (without Bowl): 545.45 Avg. needed (with Bowl): 500.00

Bye Week. In recruiting, we pick up the #9 Center and #14 WR in the nation. Still a bunch of offers out there.

Week 9
In recruiting, we pick up the #7 WR and #9 G in the nation. Two of our three targets at Tackle say no, which is not a good sign. We still have a really good prospect left, but I'll have to scour the bottom of the barrel to find some depth. Temple (3-3) at Connecticut (3-3) An essential win for us if we want to go to a bowl. Bates gets his first start in 4 years and quickly throws a TD pass to give us a 7-0 lead. Connecticut would score the next 37 points, many off them coming off of Bates' 4 INT's. Final Score: Connecticut 40, Temple 14 Colin Bates 27-47-321-2-4 Grant Forbes 7-75-0 (52-662-3) Dana Butler 6-85-1 (57-828-9) Calvin Copeland 7-96-0 (45-755-4) Race to 6000 update: Combined QB Total: 3204 yards, 23 TD, 17 INT Avg. Per Game: 457.71 Last Season Avg.: 460.09 Avg. needed (without Bowl): 545.45 Avg. needed (with Bowl): 500.00

Week 10
In recruiting, I pick up the #17 Guard and #10 RB (enjoy catching the ball!). Still no word on my Tackle. Pittsburgh (2-5) at Temple (3-4) Bates gets the start over a still injured McNeill, but he just doesn't have a strong enough arm. He played tough and we weren't down by more than 14 the whole game, but 284 yards passing isn't enough when we have no defense. Final Score: Pittsburgh 38, Temple 24 Colin Bates 26-46-284-3-1 Dana Butler 12-143-1 (69-971-10) Grant Forbes 3-22-0 (55-684-5) Calvin Copeland 2-47-0 (47-802-4) Race to 6000 Update: Combined QB Total: 3488 yards, 26 TD, 18 INT Avg. Per Game: 436.00 Last Season Avg.: 460.09 Avg. needed (without Bowl): 545.45 Avg. needed (with Bowl): 500.00

Week 11
The #12 Tackle in the nation finally commits to us. We also landed the #24 Guard, which makes three Guard commitments in one class. I still have offers out to the #6 WR and the #29 Tackle, and now I'll move on to tageting walk-ons. Temple (3-5) at Boston College (4-4) McNeill is now downgraded to probable, but after thinking about it, I have to stick with Bates. McNeill is just too prone to INT's. This plan didn't completely work out since Bates threw 4 picks, but he did at least improve his yardage totals and once again kept the game close. We actually led at halftime, but unfortunately our defense just wasn't strong enough to hold Boston College down. Final Score: Boston College 39, Temple 36 Colin Bates 29-55-414-4-4 Dana Butler 9-151-4 (78-1122-14) - This dude is an absolute stud. As a true freshman, he currently leads the nation in receptions, yards, and TD's Grant Forbes 7-94-0 (62-778-5) Calvin Copeland 3-69-0 (50-871-4) Race to 6000 Update: Combined QB Total: 3902 yards, 30 TD, 22 INT Avg. Per Game: 433.56 Last Season Avg.: 460.09 Avg. needed (without Bowl): 545.45 Avg. needed (with Bowl): 500.00

Week 12
The #36 Tackle signs with us, so we're just waiting on the WR. Temple (3-6) at #15 Syracuse (6-2) Another embarassing loss. The game was so bad that even Butler was shut down, for the first time all year. With a 47-0 halftime score, Colin Bates was benched and McNeill came in to generate some offense and prevent a shutout. Final Score: Syracuse 75, Temple 7 Colin Bates 5-17-69-0-2 Cornelius McNeill 15-25-155-1-2 (sacked 7 times) Grant Forbes 5-52-0 (67-830-5) Dana Butler 2-18-0 (80-1140-14) Calvin Copeland 0-0-0 (50-871-4) Race to 6000 Update: Combined QB Total: 4126 yards, 31 TD, 26 INT Avg. Per Game: 412.6 Last Season Avg.: 460.09 Avg. needed (without Bowl): 545.45 Avg. needed (with Bowl): 500.00

Heh. Do you mean for this season or forever? The latter may be true as well, although I think we would have won 6 games if Rayburn didn't get hurt. It will be hard tt make a bowl with my defensive rules, but we'll see.

Week 13
Rutgers (3-7) at Temple (3-7) Not happy with the play of Bates, so I give McNeill the start in the final week. He came through by providing a ton of offense and keeping us in the game throughout a seesaw battle. Rutgers seemed to take control for good with a 28-17 lead in the 4th quarter, but McNeill led us on two late TD drives, finishing it off with a 2 yard TD with 56 seconds left. The defense managed to hold and we won 32-28 to equal our best win total to date. Final Score: Temple 32, Rutgers 28 Cornelius McNeill 37-56-431-3-1 Dana Butler 10-114-1 (90-1254-15) Grant Forbes 6-68-1 (73-898-6) Calvin Copeland 7-88-1 (57-959-5) Race to 6000 Final Update: Combined QB Total: 4557 yards, 34 TD, 27 INT Avg. Per Game: 414.3 Last season Avg.: 460.1 Needed improvement (without bowl): 131.2 Needed improvement (with bowl): 85.7
