New Camera
As a birthday present to myself, I went out and ordered a new camera a few days ago. My Canon A80 has served me well but it was around 10K pictures and I felt I needed to move up a rung on the camera ladder since I had learned about all I could from my previous camera. With the Canon S5 IS coming out, I thought it was a great time to jump to the S3 IS since it could be had for under $300 and was just about the level of camera I was looking to go to as I think I am still a little away from a digital SLR.
The two biggest features right off the bat are the 12x optical zoom and the image stabilization. The zoom was a must- the A80 only had a 3.6x optical so you couldn't get in too close to things. The image stabilization makes it a lot easier to get low light shots in particular. Also, the focus, while not perfect, is a lot better at getting what I'm looking for (the cicada picture lower down is the best example of that). The LCD is bigger and it takes 6 MP pictures but those are more cosmetic at the moment than anything. So, anyways, here's some fun over the couple of days with my new camera. Unfortunately, Photobucket limits to 800x600 but I may post some elsewhere to get the full effect of some of these images. SI

Thanks for the kind words in this and the other thread. The zoom, focus, and other shooting modes (the action shots of Zack Greinke pitching are all from one quick shutter sports mode with no changes to the settings) are all worth it for someone looking to move up from a simple point-and-click. I really don't have much bad I can say about my old camera- it had issues in low light and sometimes got silly with the focus so you'd have to set your focus elsewhere and then take the shot- but, really, it's just more that this camera has even more goodies that I didn't even know existed and, until I took lots of pictures with my other camera, didn't know I wanted/needed. With regards to the fireworks, those were the best of about 30 or 40. There is some blurring in others, those just happened to be the two best. I actually got pretty good at fireworks with my A80 as I started realizing which ones you could take at 1/30th of a second, which at 1/20th, which needed 1/10th, etc.
The last two I love. I couldn't do that with my other camera because I couldn't have gotten close enough. The butterfiles are quite small, maybe 1" across the wings and they were a good 6' away from me but I zoomed right in and got that shot. Same with the cicada as it was a good 5' over my head. SI

What is it with new cameras and taking pictures of plants and bugs? We got our new Olympus FE-230 in April, and Mrs. SpeechCoach has been taking flower pictures everywhere we go...

They don't move, and they have brilliant color, which makes them fun to shoot. I seem to be a masochist, though, I bought a new camera last weekend (Olympus SP550UZ), so far most of what I've shot is either with me moving or with my subject moving. I.e. most of the shots I've done are from me on a boat with significant waves around me, or are of my cat. All my shots are at my flickr site, http://www.flickr.com/photos/terpkristin I add the caveat though that I'll be posting all of my photos there--including some that I end up using for the ABC of photography stuff, so if you want to remain completely unbiased towards shots in that stuff, don't look. I personally don't mind, I figure most people will realize my shots by what I shoot, but fair warning is fair warning. /tk
