I just got an email from the boss that due to the incredible shortage of doctors in Louisiana and the fact that the Baton Rouge area doesn't qualify for many of the federal incentives that are being offered to lure new physicians to New Orleans that she has gotten the approval to offer an across the board 15% raise to all of the psychiatrists working for the agency in an attempt to retain our services and to aid us in the recruiting of new psychiatrists. I've mentioned before my reasons for wanting to work for a state agency and I've never regretted that decision. However, I never expected to be compensated in a manner that was even close to what I could make full time in the private sector. With this raise and the increase in salary that I was offered when I left my old job for this job, I'm now actually paid fairly close to what the average private child psychiatrist makes and I'll still get my 10% raise in November if I pass my Child oral boards!

Now don't take this the wrong way, but I really hope the nurses get some bonus, too...in my way too frequent visits to hospitals, the nurses are usually my best friends...

Edit to add: OK, I've just re-read what I wrote about the nurses and don't want anybody to think I'm taking away from you or your deservedness of a raise, EF. I really don't mean that. I think it's awesome, and given the types of issues that I'm sure are going on in LA in general right now, I'm sure they really need good psychiatrists down there.

I wouldn't have taken that the wrong way. Actually, a month ago, they gave raises for all classified employees which included nurses. The raises were about the same percentage across the board and the doctors were the only group that didn't get a raise, as we are considered unclassified employees. We weren't happy about that, but it wasn't unexpected as we were often left out of raises in the past.. this came out of the blue and was a huge very pleasant surprise.
