System Restore on External Hard Drive?

I accidently deleted some vacation video. Is there a way to get this back via my external hard drive (where it was housed)? It was too big for the recycle bin and I did it thinking I was done editing it when in fact I am not. Woops!

I've since tried using this freeware:

I have found one of the files and am trying to resave it but am having problems. There is a drop down box that says, "if the file has been deleted select 'no FAT'". When I click the drop down menu it is blank. When I try and save it it tells me there was a problem. The file shows up in the directory I saved it to but the video is blank, essentially the file place holder has been created and nothing else.

From the reviews, no one else is having the problem. The software had no problems finding my external HD.
