White Couple Win Black IVF Twins in UK Ruling

LONDON (Reuters) - Black twins born to a white couple after an IVF sperm mix-up will stay with them even though another man is their legal father, a British judge ruled on Wednesday in a key case for the booming fertility industry.

Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss said a black man whose sperm was mistakenly used instead of that of the mother's husband to produce the babies in an "astonishingly traumatic" case was the legal father but the twins would not be removed.

"(This) is a tragic human story of two families trying to come to terms with the consequences of the mistake," she said.

What a mess. What do you guys think of this story.

Personally, the tragedy in this thing is not the fact that the babies are black and the couple is white; it's that because a a lab mistake, these kids are going to be hounded by the media and pushed into the spotlight for the rest of their lives.

IVF has alwayd made me a bit uncomfortable for some reason, but I have never been able to put my inger on the reason why. Maybe it's because mix-ups like this can happen.
