MOO - A week from today
I'm still on the fence on this one, but the initial reviews are very positive. A couple more and I'll have yet another addictive game to add to the collection.

For those not familiar with this one, is it a space RTS?

Moo, and no you won't catch up with me... btw...I'm doubtful on buying this game, the previews have been mixed, and I'm fearful that while it may be an okay game on its own, I don't know if it's going to be able to walk in its predecessors shoes... |

I'm pretty skeptical. I'll wait for quite a while before giving this a try. It's too much of a hassle getting games delivered to Japan to risk a game that has been delayed for so long.
I'll let you guys be the guinea pigs. |

I'll wait til it's released and read a few reviews then. I don't have much faith in previews, etc. I've been burned before by the "pre-release" reviews.

Beta tester comments have been very positive, and the few early *reviews* have been glowing. It looks very deep and involving - I'm very excited to play it.

The actual combat is real time, but on a fleet level, not by individual ship. The Real time combat is supposed to have a very strategic feel to it, not a rush and attack like typical RTS games. |

combat is real-time I believe. The reason given was turn-based would take too much time for larger battles.

I have been all over the IG boards and the Apolyton boards, and there is a lot of good stuff being said about it from the people with the advanced review copies...
It will be getting my money anyway. There are a few good reviews out already at IGN and UGO.

What Bee said. On a related note, anyone taken a look at the upcoming Galactic Civilizations? Has some intriguing elements to it.

Someone bought the beta of GalCiv and started a dynasty at the old board, but it never got off the ground (too bad). I thought seriously about getting it, but I don't have the patience to deal with crashes and stuff so I was going to wait until the game was released.
It does have some nice features. I really like the idea of having a United Planets Organization that can vote on different resolutions etc. Although I have my doubts it would be any more effective than the United Nations. Also, I liked the idea of having different forms of government and having a Senate, etc. that your political party could lose control of and it affect your power in the game. Lots of good ideas IMO. |

I know inherently that all reviews are biased, but this one seems even more so. Like a couple of fanboys reviewing the game. |

Yeah, I wouldn't use that review to make any decisions about the game - by the fanboys, for the fanboys. But that's ok. I'm sure more reviews will be a-coming.

After the game is released I think we'll see positive and negative reviews. I'm more interested in the negative reviews because those will show the weaknesses of the game. Based on that, I'll determine if those weaknesses are things that will truly bother me about the game or not.

A good thing to do is hang around the forums after the game is released...there are always a ton of gripes on the forums...really shows what people hate about the game.

I think that the quality of reivews is vastly superior after the game has been around a few weeks. Just look at the initial reviews for Black and White versus the later ones. However, it's usually ok if 5-6 reviews come out (including some non-fanboy ones) and they're all positive.

I'll wait to see how the real-time combat is implemented, but I'd have to say at this point I'm disappointed they went that route. IMO, one of the great things about MOO2 was that you really got to see the effect of upgraded weapons & shields in turn-based combat. I loved the combat aspect. On the flip side, it was a big detriment to me in Space Empires IV that combat was so poorly portrayed, even though it was turn-based.

I just picked up Civ3 for PC for 4.99 and was quite amused that the manual had an ad for MOO3 coming in the first quarter of 2002!

Here is the A Vault review. The notes about the AI have me concerned. Especially the screenshot of combat...

I've never played MOO before, and I haven't looked at any of the previews (yet), but I'm going to take a look at MOO3. My old college roommate was addicted to the first two, and I always meant to give the games a try, but never did. I'll probably wait for him to buy it and tell me what he thinks of it.

Those screenshots look horrible. I'm a vet of the first two, having logged countless hours in MOO1 and not quite as many in MOO2. I don't understand how they could have messed up such a great formula for a game. I'd have been happy with just a small 'update' to the game, but it looks like they've gone and totally changed the game for the sake of change. I hate it when a franchise does this, it reminds me of the great mistake FPS: Football did with '99. Change for the sake of change is almost never good.

Bee: I got it at a Circuit City in Palm Springs. It was the original version not the "Game of the Year" edition. The GOTY edition was 29.99. I couldn't believe Civ 3 for 4.99, so I grabbed it right away. I also got Freedom Force for 12.99. Not as good, but still the best I had seen.

Ug. GamesDomain, whose reviews are usually spot-on, just bodyslammed this game in a review. Methinks it's going to be a stinker now...

The initial reviews were very positive. It really makes you wonder if they weren't paid or had alterior motives, because the later ones are so uniformly unflattering.

Yea, but those reviews were supposedly off the gold master. If they are off the beta, the review should clearly state that - and it's not a review, it's a preview. I think there's some underhanded shit going on...

This thread is just downright depressing. I love the MOO series and still fire up a game of MOO2 very now and then.
Looks like I will join the ranks of the wait and see crowd. For me, it may be a case of wait forever, since I have a very limited game dollar that is already going to be stretched with the likes of CM4, the revised TD and possibly OOTP5. Bummer. |

I don't think it's necessarily a total loss. There are folks that seems to enjoy the game (admittedly, it IS early yet). What I can gather from the folks that do are that:
1) Don't expect this to be MoO2++. It's a new and different game. 2) Expect to put in a LOT of time into getting used to the concept, UI and gameplay. It seems to be trying to extend itself and the genre a bit. 3) Don't expect to be able to do everything yourself. It's a macromanagement game, not a micro- one. (Paging, Dr Anrhy . . . ) 4) Expect to have to look around for information. The manual apparently sucks tremendously. Quote:
Ya, I usually find myself agreeing with their reviews more than other sites (which means, the negative review by them worries me as well). Well, y'know, except for that EA-FOF reviewer. Can't stand that guy. |
