[Help] Internet Stupidity
Maybe one of the geniuses here can tell me what's going on, I really don't have a clue. My internet seems to be "going down" intermittently but it's not really going down per se. I'm logged onto AIM (via Gaim) and my Gmail works, and I can get to websites I've cached, even if I refresh them (such as FOFC). But sites that aren't in my cache are having problems loading at all. For example, I haven't done a Google search in awhile so when I try, it comes up as unable to find the server and tells me to check my internet connection. My wireless monitor is telling me I'm always connected, and my Bloglines, Gmail, and Gaim don't reset on me (as would happen if I were truly disconnected), but I can't for the life of me figure out why I've had these problems. The problems have only been in the last week or two. I should add that usually if I wait 20 minutes and try again, I have no problem loading items.
I've tried repairing the connection, resetting my modem and my router, which seemed to have no real effect. Any ideas on what might be going on or how to fix whatever it is? /tk

Hmm, sounds like you're having nameserver issues.
Call your internet provider and yell at em. Or ask em for the IP of the nameserver if you want to configure it yourself. If you go to your network connection, select "Properties", "Networking", you should be able to get a look at your TCP/IP properties. Generally, your connection should be set up to "Obtain DNS server address automatically." Which works fine until that server borks up. It's usually easiest to get the provider to fix it. But if you happen to have a reliable DNS server, you can just plug that in instead... Last edited by Brillig : 12-05-2006 at 07:50 PM. Reason: Stupid button foo. |

If it's a nameserver issue (I assume that would imply DNS), how do I fix it?
