College Football Conference Championship gameday discussions (contains spoilers)

The SEC and ACC will determine their conference champions today, while the Big 12 will decide who was the best team to lose to Texas this season. Army/Navy will be played as well, and a couple of key Big East match ups will decide who gets their BCS slot. k0rupt0r will have this thread to himself tomorrow, as the only college game scheduled for Sunday is Hawaii-Oregon State.

7:30 left Q2, GT hangs on to a 3-0 lead after Wake misses a FG.

Preceeding play included one of the nastiest blocks I've seen in a while, a WR comes back to help the scrambling QB & just annihilates LB KaMicheal Hall.

That block was absolutely fantastic!

GT content to just run out the final seconds & go to halftime tied at 3.

Meanwhile, CantThrowThe Ball limping noticeably on the way to the lockeroom after being tackled on the final play of the half.

1st half passing stats: 3 for 13 for 44 yds, 0 TD/1 Int

I'm thinking first team to 10 points wins this game.

I wonder if Ga. Tech checked to see if the guy throwing in the Dr Pepper Halftime Challenge had any college eligibility left.

Do you guys think Calvin Johnson wears his helmet while he is pounding his head into the wall thinking about how Reggie Ball ruined his college career?

Do you think Reggie Ball does all of Calvin Johnson's homework, drives him around wherever he wants to go, gets him coffee, etc.

No, but I think Calvin Johnson probably does stuff like telling Reggie Ball that they are going out to meet girls or to a club and then drops Ball off in the middle of nowhere, hoping he cannot find his way back.

Eh, it wouldn't do Ball any good to try to pick up girls in a club anyway.

He'd make a pass at a girl ... but it'd land on some guy 5'5, 385 lbs 10 yards across the bar.

Either that or he'd get scared and grab his ball and start running home.

And then when he went in the bathroom to get his composure back, he'd try to use the urinal and end up hitting the sink or trashcan.

4th Qtr stats for Ball: 1/6 for 14 yds, 1 Int. 3 carries/4 yds rush
4th Qtr stats for Skinner: 7/12 for 126 yds, 1 sack.

Anybody still wonder why I can't wait to see another QB at Tech?
9/29 for 127 yds, 0 TD/2 Int.
-- A second straight week of sub 30% passing.
-- 6th week in the past 7 under 50% (only +50% against Duke, helped no doubt by playing only two quarters)
-- Has thrown a TD pass in only 1 of the past 4 games (also vs Duke)

It's to the point that I'm not the least bit surprised by any of this, really can't even get too disappointed about it. As long as we have an idiot head coach & a moron OC, this is just how it is until this sorry son of a bitch runs out of eligibility.

Maybe it was my imagination, but it looked like GT was running the ball pretty easily, at least in the spots I saw. Why did Ball throw 29 times?

See idiot head coach & moron OC comment above.

In fairness, the running game wasn't especially effective at times in the first half (avg <3 ypc other than one 24 yd run on the opening drive) so some of the passing there was necessary (or would have been if we had a QB who could hit a bull in the ass with a bazooka). Still, no real excuse for Choice not touching the ball in the final 14 minutes.

Brent Musburger is a frickin' moron. Did I just hear him try to compare the UCLA 4th down stop with 10 minutes to go in the 1st quarter to the Texas 4th down stop in the Rose Bowl?

Meanwhile, the back to back losses apparently mean GT won't be getting the Gator Bowl either.

http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?...meId=263360059
ACC commissioner John Swofford said at halftime that the Gator Bowl would be allowed to select another conference team, essentially giving the bowl permission to overlook a rule that would force the bowl to select Georgia Tech over Clemson.

While I expected the loss today, I'm both shocked & disappointed at the conference for allowing the bowl to ignore the groundrules that the conference established. If it had involved one of the FL or NC schools, you can bet your ass that the ACC wouldn't have made that concession.

I'm unhappy about the loss, obviously, but willing to give credit to Wake Forest. If we had to lose the CG to a team on the other side, Wake is the one I'd pick every time.

If this is the case, though, I'm up in arms. Tech has not travelled poorly. We sold half again our allotment to the ACCG through the school, and have historically shown well regardless of where we travel, including individual fans purchasing well over 5000 tickets to donate to military personnel in last year's Emerald Bowl, since it was way the hell across the country.

Last season, despite a 5-3 record in-conference, we (along with Boston College) were went out to the Emerald Bowl (San Francisco, second to last choice - BC went to MPC in Boise, last choice), being passed over for east-coast bowls in favor of Clemson (4-4), Virginia (3-5), and NC State (3-5). This rule was put in in the offseason specifically to avoid this - BC was the damn co-champion of the Atlantic, and got the last bowl tie-in. Going back on it in the first year because the Gator Bowl wants Clemson versus Texas is bullshit, and the ACC better figure out something to do.

Maybe he just does not want Ball to embarass Ga Tech anymore

That is a sad decision on Swofford's part though. Nice way to change the "rules" mid stream.

The gameplan for this one was simple - stop Cowan and Markey running on offense, and be prepared for the rush all day on defense. Why we don't seem prepared for either of those I have no idea. I guess the players are just looking ahead the the NC game, but at the moment we look like absolute crap.

DOLA - if we can't stop Cowan for the rest of the game, it might be best for us not to go the championship game, because Troy Smith is faster and can actually throw the ball.

I thought it was a strange decision to have the ACC CG in Jacksonville since a lot of the time the loser would be up for the Gator Bowl (like VT last year). I wouldn't imagine most fans would be excited about going back to Jacksonville a month later.

I have a strong suspicion they've already figured out what they're going to do: play the ACCCG somewhere else next year.

It was only half full today, and my guess is that the conference decided to just let the Gator Bowl have it their way for this bowl season in some sort of effort to soften that blow.

Is anyone getting some serious static on the SEC Championship game in HD? It makes it unwatchable in HD.
