BBCF Demo updated and final version 1.51 released

I've updated the single season demo of BBCF to version 1.51. You can download the full install here (~40 MB):

http://72.29.67.246/GDS/BBInstalldemo.exe

If you have a prior version of the demo installed, I would uninstall it first and then install the new one.

Here's the final update for 1.51 (15 MB):

http://72.29.67.246/GDS/BBUpdate.exe

-Fixed issues with inseason player development
-Corrected the number of recruiting scholarships used in some instances
-Updated the budget process (overall and recruiting) to tie more into performance.
-Changed season grades for playoff leagues to be more accurate, esp. for teams that advanced further in the playoff.

Here's the thread on 1.50 with more info on what has changed in the entire update from 1.11:

Played the old demo and really enjoyed it. Are there plans for a new version? I'm assuming that it would not be until next year at the earliest if there were?

This has probably been said here or elsewhere, but I wanted to say it myself.

Arlie, thank you for putting this update together and releasing it as a free patch/update. It would have been easy to take this update and just release it as a "new" version of the game and get quite a few customers. This goes above and beyond what anyone would consider necessary for a game that's a year old.

He's announced that he is going to be developing his pro football sim as his next project.

I am getting problems with the game being unable to start because setup.dat and/or pstats.dat are inaccessible. I can't even get a new game started, and I'm using the default files.

Edit: This is with version 1.50.

Try to manually delete the setup.dat and stats.dat file and then start a new career. I'm guessing one of these files is locked and not allowing the game to overwrite them when you start a new game.

I appreciate the comments guys. We also have exciting news in that Grey Dog Software has put out an ad in PC Gamer for two different issues (Holiday 2006 and Jan 2007).

So, check it out if you get a chance (it's page 118 in the current holiday issue).

Still not working for me. Should I maybe reinstall the game into the default directory? I have it installed on a different drive besides C:.

Yeah, in addition to what I said in the PM, you can try to install it in the default folder. Although, location shouldn't matter (I never use the default folder for my test PC).

It crashes when I click on the create new league button

If you want, I can send you the installation log file, and the dependency walker log file. I have tried all of the fixes for these types of problems on your Forums over at Greydog, but none of them fixed it.

The game does try and install a version of the OLEAUT32.dll, but it's an older one (version 2.40.4275.1) and it won't install you have a later version already. The version I have is 5.1.2600.2180.

What version is yours? (should be in windows/system32)

A couple things:

First, send me an email at [email protected] with your version of this file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ovsCombo2D.ocx

Next, see if the game will install on your C drive. It shouldn't matter, but someone had an issue that was solved by doing that.

Well, I picked up the game again with the new update. I was enjoying my first season. I'm really not sure how things like in-season recruiting will shake out yet, but its interesting. But then I hit a bug which has stopped my career in its tracks. Somehow, during recruiting, I ended up with -1 scholarships during week 16. I look at all players with scholarship offers and none show up. I did have two transfers if that matters. But I tried switching to AI controlled recruiting and it can't fix the problem. You can't cut a player during recruiting, so that solution failed. So, I have -1 scholarships and the game won't let me advance a week.

I believe this is the same problem reported over at Grey Dog, http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...2&postcount=15

Thanks. Do you happen to know where the player editor Arlie is referring to? Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I have no idea how to implement that fix.

dola, I'm also confused why Arlie thinks this won't happen in future seasons. I got the result after downloading the patch today and starting a brand new season. Does that mean it won't happen again when I start a new career? If so, that's one odd bug.

I'm looking into purchasing this game, can anyone chime in on how accurately it simulates college football?

Looks pretty solid to me, although I haven't done any hard-core analysis.

You click on the Options button (not the Game Options button), player editor is the third thing listed.

(From the GDS site)

To be on the safe side (esp for existing MP leagues and those using the demo), I've updated both the retail 1.51 and the demo to remove the scholarship check causing some people to get "stucK". I've added an internal check that may correct the situation after people advance (if it indeed needs correcting, but it will not stop people from advancing).

You can get the updated retail version here:

http://72.29.67.246/GDS/BBUpdate.exe

I also added just the demo EXE for people running the 1.51 demo:

http://72.29.67.246/GDS/BBUpdateDemo.exe

For anyone that has not upgraded to 1.51, the full installs for both the demo and retail have the updated EXE now.

I've added an internal check that may correct the situation after people advance (if it indeed needs correcting, but it will not stop people from advancing).

You can get the updated retail version here:

I also added just the demo EXE for people running the 1.51 demo:

For anyone that has not upgraded to 1.51, the full installs for both the demo and retail have the updated EXE now.

Thanks. I'll check it out tonight.

I never knew there was a player editor in the game. Thanks.

No problem. A couple people had the same problem with the demo so I wanted to update the game to be safe.

Thanks

I was playing last night and noticed that at least one player who I had redshirted was listed on the depth chart (2nd string qb). On the roster screen, he was clearly shown as redshirting. I manually cleared him off the depth chart, so I don't know what would have happened had he played.

Finally was able to get my copy to run. here is what I did

How to Repair MDAC 2.81 under Windows XP with SP21. In Windows Explorer, open the c:\Windows\Inf folder.

Note If you cannot see the c:\Windows\Inf folder, follow these steps: a. Click Start, click My Computer, and then click Folder Options on the Tools menu.
b. Click the View tab.
c. Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders.
d. Click to clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box.
e. Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. In the c:\Windows\Inf folder, right-click the Mdac.inf file, and then click Install.

3. When you are prompted to insert the Windows XP SP2 CD, use one of the following methods: I. If you have a Windows XP SP2 CD:
a. Insert the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD in the CD or DVD drive.
Note If a "Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP" message appears, click Exit.
b. Click Browse.
c. In the File name box, type CD or DVD drive that contains the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD drive letter:\i386. For example, type d:\i386 if the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD is in drive D.
d. Click Open.

II. If you do not have a Windows XP SP2 CD:
a. In the File name box, type %systemroot%\windows\servicepackfiles\i386, and then click Open.
b. When prompted for adcjavas.inc, point to C:\Windows\servicepackfiles\i386
Note: If you cannot find this folder put the Windows CD into your CD drive and browse for that file.
c. When prompted for the file handler.reg, either point to C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\msadc, or put the Windows XP CD in your CD-ROM drive.
d. When prompted for MDACRdMe.htm, point to C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Ado. If this file is not present rename the file MDACReadme.htm to MDACRdMe.htm.
e. When prompted for oledbjvs.inc, point to C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Ole DB.
f. When prompted for mssoap1.dll, point to C:\Program Files\Common Files\MSSoap\Binaries.
g. When prompted for mssoapr.dll, point to C:\Program Files\Common Files\MSSoap\Binaries (or below its subfolders).

4. You may also be prompted for the original Windows XP CD that was used to install the operating system.
For example, type d:\i386 if the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD is in drive D.
d. Click Open.

Note: In the case you cannot find those files in the given folders search the whole hard disk for them.

I have been playing the updated version for a few days now. I think it is by and large a very good game. But the polls continue to annoy me such that I'm putting the game down.

One small thing is that in the new version, red-shirted players sometimes appear in the depth chart and actually play in the games. Worse, they don't seem to lose their redshirt status. I've noticed this at QB and RB, but it may happen at other positions as well.

The polls, though, are a sticking point for me. In this season, I just played my 5th game as Iowa. I was the preseason consensus number 1 team in both polls. After 5 games, Iowa is 5-0. After week 4, I was still number 1 in both polls. In Week 5, I just whupped the crap out of 5th ranked Michigan at home by the score of 50-0. So, what happens. Here is the media poll:

1. Purdue 4-0 (previous 2nd) after beating unranked Illinois 41-23 at home.
2. USC 3-0 (previously 3rd) after beating unranked Washington 31-19 at home.
3. Iowa 5-0 (previously 1st) after beating 5th ranked Michigan at home 50-0.

My overall SOS is 1st in the nation. I've beaten 2 ranked teams (5th ranked Michigan and 19th ranked Michigan St. on the road).

Seriously, wtf?

I wouldn't be as upset if these sort of things worked themselves out by the end of the season. However, I'm coming off a season where I won the national championship against USC. That USC team had lost 2 games coming into the championship. Meanwhile, undefeated Pittsburgh and 1-loss UNC were forced to watch the championship on TV. Polling just seems all over the place. I've had a couple seasons where I was the preseason 1st ranked team, but dropped as low as 7th while never losing a game (while 3 1-loss teams are ahead of me). It's just weird.

I just continue to feel that this a very good game ruined by its bad polling system (which is unfortunately very important to a college football game). Hopefully, whenever the next version of the game comes out, polling will be redone completely.

Here's a beta version of 1.52:

"After seeing all the tech support comments and feedback on 1.51, I am going to do a 1.52. Here are the main pieces:

1. Fix the redshirt issue - players should no longer become sometimes eligible when they redshirt.

2. Improve the polls - esp early weeks. There was an issue with top teams sometimes swapping early in the season for no apparent reason. This usually worked itself out by week 8 or 9, but this update should address it as well.

3. Fixed the Home and Home issue where sometimes you would end up with two road games.

4. Adjusted recruiting one more time to have players be more picky when it comes to teams stacked with talent.

5. Improved the last recruiting email to include all players under scholarship added (sometimes players would join after the email was made in 1.51).

6. Added a complete recruit class ranking tracking system. There will be a new table in the stats.db (done on the fly) that shows the number of 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 star players each team recruited, an average rating, a total and a score. It will also store the ranking for the team that year. This info will be stored after each season's recruiting and will be accessible in game.

7. Improved conference movement. You should see much more movement overall, especially on the high setting.

8. Fixed an engine issue where kickers would sometimes miss close fields goals "short" in the PBP.

9. Fixed an issue that could cause games to sim weeks without playing some games. I will need some verification help, though, as there may be more reasons for it outside of the one I fixed.

Here's the link:

www.greydogsoftware.com/downloads/bb2005.zip

Just download it and unzip it over your existing bb2005.exe in your game folder. Also, in order to see the new recruit class info, you need to advance past the end of recruiting with the new version."

That's good to hear. I'll give it another go especially if the polls have improved.

Just an FYI, but the demo is now fully updated to the regular game. You can download it here:

http://72.29.67.246/GDS/BBInstalldemo.exe

If you have version 1.50 or 1.51 of the demo already installed, you can download just the EXE update here:

I'm looking for usable mods for this version. I want real logos, team names, etc.

Does anyone know where I can find something like that?

Yeah, I saw that, but the post containing the link hasn't been updated last January. I'm assuming the file is no longer compatible.
