(POL) Rangel Insults Mississippi

hxxp://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/11/10/D8LA89AG0.html

By EMILY WAGSTER PETTUS
Associated Press Writer
JACKSON, Miss.

A Mississippi congressman says Rep. Charles Rangel of New York owes the southern state an apology, and he asks if insults are what Mississippi should expect when Democrats take over leadership in Congress.
Rangel, a Democrat, was quoted in The New York Times on Thursday saying: "Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?"

Rangel said he didn't intend to insult the state, but Rep. Chip Pickering, R-Miss., issued a sharp statement criticizing the choice of words.

"I hope his remarks are not the kind of insults, slander and defamation that Mississippians will come to expect from the Democrat leadership in Washington, D.C.," Pickering said.

Elbert Garcia, a Rangel spokesman in New York, sent The Associated Press a response from Rangel: "I certainly don't mean to offend anyone. I just love New York so much that I can't understand why everyone wouldn't want to live here."

The Times article was about the political clout gained by the New York congressional delegation in the midterm elections. Rangel is the ranking Democrat on Ways and Means and is in line to become chairman of the powerful tax-writing committee. He said, among other things, that he wants to direct more federal money to his state.

Given the big deal we make out of every misspoken word, I can't believe Wrangel would make a comment like that. I also can't believe that his spokesman thought that answer would fly either.

Yes, the way I express my love for the state I live in is to randomly make negative expressions about the other 49 states. Idaho, you're next on my NY Love List!

Its amusing, because most of the South gets far far more federal money than they put in. Rangel's an idiot for saying it, but I'm sure its true (not living in Miss) for many, many people (including myself)

Good thing Rangel didn't look at him funny. Guy might have cried or told mom.

Congress has adopted MLB's profit-sharing model. Take money out of NY to distribute to the places no one wants to play.

Hell yes there is...It got down into the 60s last night.

Besides, It's not a bad thing having the Snowbirds down here, it reminds me daily of why it would drive me crazy living up there.

When I lived down there, the "snowbirds" were the least of the problem. Aside from the many fat Canadians wearing thongs on the beaches every February, they weren't really a problem. It was the transplanted Jersey and NY'ers who were the biggest pains in the asses to live around - grumpy, unappreciative, mean, and generally the most miserable people I've had the misfortune to be around.

I doubt things have improved since I left.

The comments really do not bother me. Several people I know are getting all worked up over it, but you just have to consider the source. I would be surprised if Rangel (or Crapshoot for that matter) has ever even stepped foot in the state of MS.

It is also my understanding that the federal numbers are inflated due to the Katrina aftermath.

A lot of the federal funding in Mississippi goes to the Pascagoula Shipyards.

Outside of the Mississippi Delta region, Mississippi isn't that bad.

I was kind of just thinking that at least it does have some pretty places, and I've encountered quite a few people from there who were tolerable at worst.

I ain't exactly rushing to buy a place there, but I can think of an awful lot of places that I'd put MS well ahead of if I were relocating.

Exactly. I wouldn't want to live in Greenville, Clarkesdale, or Cleveland, but Jackson, Columbus, and Vicksburg are alright. I'm not saying I'm packing up and moving right now, but there are certainly worse places to live.

The Delta looks third world in most of its parts, but it is really not too bad.

So its a big deal for a guy from NY to insult the south, but its fine for southerners to insult coastal cities as bastions of liberal elites and insist "real Americans" live elsewhere.

The former is ridiculous slander from a damnyankee, the latter more closely resembles fact.

A yankee is someone who moves "down here" from "up there."

A "Damnyankee" is one who stays. Clearly, those were just yankees.

If you grow up and live most of your life in Arizona, does that still qualify as "damnyankee"?

That tends to be rather case-by-case.

There's an approach that says if you do not have an allegiance a member of the South, then you would generally be a damnyankee. Another point of view says that if you weren't specifically aligned with the northern invaders then you aren't technically a damnyankee.

And in the case of Arizona, it might actually come down to what part of the Arizona Territory you are aligned with (north gets damnyankee, south does not).

"Grew up in " usually trumps "lived in", barring completion of Southern naturalization.
