[POL] What makes a felony?
Wade and I were discussing the fact that felons are not permitted to vote in the United States. This is a topic I hadn't really thought about until recently, and Wade had never put much thought to. While discussing the finer points, I told him that I think he'd be surprised at what can make a felony charge. Can anyone on the pro/con side tell me some lesser crimes that people may be surprised are a felony conviction?

From a quick google search it seems that it can be in some states at least.

In Wisconsin, I believe your 4th or 5th DWI is a felony. After displaying a complete disregard for anything after 4 or 5 DWIs.. I would have no issue removing someones ability to vote. But, I think you are looking for things such as 'spitting on the sidewalk' is a felony in Alaska type things.. (it isn't, just thinking of something where one would say.. Holy shit?!?!)

Correct on all statements (well, I don't know about the first ). Things like a state where being caught with 1 joint is a felony (I also don't know if this is true).

States define what a "felony" is. I believe most, if not all states, define a felony as any crime for which the maximum penalty is greater than 1 year imprisonment. That means if you are sentenced to 6 months in prison, but could have been sentenced to 2 years for the same offense, then you have been convicted of a felony.

I believe that once you've done your time and paid your fines that in most states you can get your voting rights re-instated. At least that's what I remember seeing.

Rhode Island voters approved yesterday restoring voting rights to felons who were on probation or on parole.

I've never heard of this. My understanding was that you lost your voting rights for life. I suppose I need to do more research.

Restoration of voting rights does exist in most states AFAIK. It definitely exists in Georgia, which is how a convicted bank robber ended up running for a local office yesterday.
