Cultural references

So, I used to play in a softball league, where one of the annual foes was the county's Office of the Public Defender, or pretty universally OPD.

Occasionally, I'd have a conversation with someone, and someone would ask something like "who do we play this week?' and the response would be "O-P-D."

If I, or a couple of my friends would be part of this conversation, this would trigger -- absolutely 100% of the time -- a quick, almost reflexive exchange...

You down with O-P-D?

Yeah, you know me.

It must be one of those "two kinds of people" things. I understand there are age groups who wouldn't necessarily get the reference... but if you were alive most anywhere outside a cave in the early 1990s, then I just don't see how you could not make this connection. I'm sure there are people who hear us make this exchange, and think we're in some kind of amateur radio club or something equally absurd. (Don't even get me started on amateur radios...)

In any event... just an idle curiosity. For me, there are just a number of trivial pop culture references that i'd expect pretty much anyone to get. And if/when they don't... I just write them off, basically.

Say hello to my lil' friend

Check out the big brain on [name here]

...the list goes on and on.

Truthfully, if you used "say hello to my little friend" in my presence, I'd write YOU off.

But my wife and I have a number of these we use with each other, but they're mostly a bit too obscure to be widely recognized.

Off the beaten path a bit, but a buddy of mine back in Louisiana had the "Vader Breath" on his cell phone....his phone only breathed when his wife was calling.

The 'uncanny' similarity is surely what motivates the sudden return to 1993.

I prefer to tell myself his posse actually thought they were saying "OPD" in the song. It's much more amusing that way.

Sadly, this reminds me of another 90's reference.

When we get together as a squadron to do PT, we'll do pre-warmups first. Which includes all kinds of stretches. One is the neck stretch to the left and then to the right.

Which always brings out a couple of "Now Slide." comments.

recently, someone at work emailed me about something and then sent a followup email when she realized she had sent it to the wrong Dave.

naturally, I responded "Dave's not here, man"

never heard from her again...

Doesn't matter. Back then, anything with similar initials would have triggered the reference. For example, the local community college's initials were OCC--so asking if "you down with O C C?" would likely have generated the reply, "yeah, you know me!"

It always sucks when you make a cultural reference to a person and they just don't get it at all.

Like last week, when I shouted "Throw the Jew down the well" at work and I got fired. That sucked. I should really just stick to Big Lebowski references.

Hah, yeah.. definatley sucks when you make the references...

I don't think there's a week that goes by with people that work in an office environment that you don't hear an Office Space quote.

You should bring this to the attention of our glorious warlord Premier George Walter Bush. I am sure he can get you your job back. Or maybe fearless anti-Jew warrior Melvin Gibson can help.

probably the reference I use the most is on that Letterman used to use: space-aged polymers. I don't really know why, but I end up using that all the time. I'm not sure anyone has ever gotten it
