You Moved How Many Times? I Have You Beat...

Lathum said he was the king of moving in dangarion's thread so I'm willing to bet I have moved more times than he has. Antmeister and I were discussing how many times we've moved and I thought he'd beat me by far (military brat) but oh no, I've moved a lot more than I had imagined:

While living in Los Angeles, CA:
1. Born in "Lincoln Heights"
2. Moved to a different area in "Lincoln Heights"
3. Moved to "South Central L.A."
4. Moved to "East L.A."
5. Moved to a different area in "East L.A."
6. Moved to the "Mid-Wilshire District" (near Hollywood)

While living in San Diego, CA:
7. Moved to Vista, CA
8. Moved to "Ranch Bernardo"
9. Moved to Escondido, CA
10. Moved to "Scripps Ranch"

We moved to 2 different apt. complexes in Phoenix, AZ.

And finally, Austin, TX

So let's see... I've moved a total of 13 times in my 32 years of life. That means I've averaged just under 2.5 yrs per place.

I defy anyone to beat that.

I'm right there with you, 11 times in 31 years ( I think ). And that doesn't count all the 4-5 week trips to various places while my stuff was in Saldana's shed.

13 times in 36 years myself. But, one of those was Lackland AFB and technically, we lived 4 weeks with my ex's Aunt while our place was being finished in California so.. maybe 14.

Depends on what is considered a 'move'

1. Born and adopted in Edmonton and lived on one of the military bases.
2. Dad was transfered to Ottawa...lived on one of the bases there.
3. We moved off the base...folks still live in this house.
4. Moved away to Antigonish, Nova Scotia for school.
5. When I got home, I moved out to a buddy's place.
6. Moved out to Edmonton...well, Sherwood Park to be more specific.
7. Moved into Edmonton with some friends.
8. Moved in with some friends from work in a different part of Edmonton.
9. Moved in with my girlfriend (now my wife) in another part of Edmonton.
10. We bought a house in Edmonton and live there now.

Wow, didn't think I had moved that much, especially since my parents have owned their house for more than 25 years. That averages out to about 3 years per location.

Are we talking "out of town" or just from living in one house/apartment to another?

If it's the latter:

1. Born in Livonia, MI - we lived in a duplex
2. Moved to Canton, MI - bought a house, sold it 1 year later
3. Back to Livonia - lived with grandfather while new house was being built
4. Moved to new house in Livonia, lived there for about 3 years
5. Moved to Richardson, TX
6. Moved to College Station, TX
7. Moved to Peachtree City, GA, lived in rental house for about a year
8. Moved to another rental house in PTC for about a year
9. Bought house in PTC, lived there for about 3 years
10. Spent 1 year at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC in dorm
11. Family moved to rental house in Coral Springs, FL, I lived with them during school breaks
12. Transferred to Florida Southern in Lakeland, FL after freshman year, lived in dorm
13. Parents bought house in Coral Springs, I lived there during breaks for about 4 years
14. Moved to Tallahassee for law school; parents moved back to Richardson, TX and I lived in FSU dorm for 1 year
15. Moved from dorm to apartment
16. After graduation, moved from apartment to a friend's apartment for 3 months
17. Moved to another friend's condo for 2 months
18. Moved to duplex where my wife and I eventually lived for 4 years
19. Moved to new house where we lived for 5 years
20. Moved to Lexington, KY; lived in apartment for 1 month
21. Bought house in Versailles, KY 3 months ago

I would define moving as having to pack up all your shit and move it to another location outside that building.

Lemme see, I don't think I have the number of moves, but I might be close to the total distance...

1. Born in Dallas, TX (1972)
2. Moved to Fort Worth, TX (1973)
3. Moved to Haltom City, TX (1974-1990)
4. Moved to Austin, TX (1990-1992)
5. Moved to Haltom City, TX (1992-1994)
6. Moved to Tyler, TX (1994)
7. Moved to Irving, TX (1994-1997)

9. Moved to Milan, IT (2002-2004)
10. Moved to London, UK (2004)
11. Moved to Driftwood, TX (2004-Current)

For a non-military person, the overseas stints upped the moving mileage.

I think I've lived in 10 or 11 different houses in my lifetime. All of them were in New Orleans except (obviously) the one I live in now. A couple of the places I lived in were actually just with family members because my family's house burned down in 1996, and we moved around a little until we got resettled. Anyway, 9 or 10 moves in 30 years. I guess that's sort of normal. My wife, on the other hand, lived in either one or two houses in Memphis, one in New Orleans, and one in Greensburg. She doesn't know the whole "moving" experience.

Not as much as many:

1. Born in Somers Point, NJ.

2. Moved to Atlantic City, NJ when I was 2.

3. Parent Divorced, moved to Egg Harbor Township, NJ.

4. Moved to Los Angeles for school (and back and forth each summer to NJ for semester breaks)

5. Moved to Piscataway, NJ for start of medical school.

6. Moved to Pennsauken, NJ to be closer to clinical sites.

7. Moved to Metairie, LA into first apartment down here.

8. Moved to New Orleans, LA into second apartment down here.

9. Moved to another apartment in New Orleans, LA that was being provided by a hospital I worked at.

10. Moved to New House in Prairieville, LA. 31 years old and averaged 3.1 years per place, but most of my moves have happened since I turned 17.

("x" annotates phycial address moves within the city/area)

Not a record, unless I bust out intra-city moves, but I think I'm winning the mileage race.

So either 14 city moves or 24 house moves...depending on how you rate it. I'm just a wanderer by force, but one day I want to buy a home and never move again.

Oh, and Dodgerchick, you do know there are safer neighborhoods in LA to live in right?

I didn't have a home anymore when I got to college. Parents divorced when I was 17, house got sold, Mom moved in with a guy I couldn't stand, Dad lived elsewhere. I moved every semester in college and yes they all count. So I racked up quite a few moves in college. I stopped counting when I turned 30 and had moved 30 times. (My parents liked moving -- probably trying to escape their problems..)

I can't even remember all the places I've lived. But I'm pretty stable now that I've been married for years and have my own kids.

I'm 24 years old, and I've moved a grand total of four times. Born in Detroit, Michigan, moved from Detroit to Dearborn when I was two years old. From the age of two until I was twenty one I lived in the same house in Dearborn. Two years ago we moved into the house we're staying in now, in Allen Park. Stayed in this house for three years and we're moving tomorrow back to Dearborn, but a very different part of town from where I originally stayed.

So a grand total of four times in 24 years. It's okay though, I quite like the stability.

I've been married a shade under 10 years, and this is the 8th different apartment/house we've lived in.

A couple of times it has been shitty landlords but others were to move for a better opportunity.

Yeesh ... this could get ugly.

1. Family lived in Ebenezer, Mo., outside Springfield when I was born.
2. Mom moved to apartment in Springfield when I was a few months; my mother traveled for her job, so Monday through Thursday I lived with my grandparents on a farm outside Springfield.
3. Mom moved to new apartment
4. Mom moved to new apartment
5. Family moved to house outside Springfield
6. Family moved to Ash Grove, Mo.
7. Family moved to Willard, Mo.
8. Family moved back to Springfield
9. Family moved just outside Springfield
10. Family moved back into Springfield
11. Went to college in Columbia
12. Moved to Kansas City where my mom now lived.
13. Moved back to college in Columbia
14. Moved back to KC
15. Moved back to Columbia
16. Moved back to KC
17. Moved to apartment in KC
18. Moved to another apartment in KC

20. Moved to house in KC

I feel like I'm missing something in there ... The sad thing is that moves 6-18 took place over just 11 years -- that's 13 moves in 11 years.

I expect to move again within the next 3-5 years, and I hope that one will be long term.

Matt, they shouldn't count, you need to actually live outside a relative small radius. Before you now it, you'll claim that you've actually experienced the world by living in one small part of the country.

I think you should always count college moves from one dorm to another (or from a dorm to apartment, etc). For the summer if you just put your stuff in storage and go back to live with your parents that probably shouldn't count, but if you actually move everything back and forth it should count IMO.
