Goodbye Wake
Super Typhoon Ioke, packing 160 mph winds, is expected to storm across Wake Island in the middle of nowhere in the Pacific. Wake Island figured in the Pacific War in WW2 and has been used as an emergency and refueling landing site for military and commercial aircrafts since then. It's a thin atoll about 8 feet high and may be wiped clean by Ioke. It has been designated in the National Register of Historic Place so it's sad to see places like that go.

I saw this on weather.com and I'm pretty surprised it's not getting more press. This seems from what I'm reading to be a MONSTER storm that is just going to, as Bucc says, whipe Wake off the face of the earth. Does anyone know if there's a chance that this hits any major land areas?

If you got nothing, then throwing up brick after brick isn't gonna build you anything but a shithouse.

I know this is only Wikipedia, but it's the most convenient source, and I think the history is worth reading:

Axis and Allies was the first thing that jumped in my mind, as well.

I sincerely doubt there's going to be any major structural damage. Wake Island's infrastructure is probably similar to the Philippines' (a majority of the houses are made with concrete rather than wood materials), which means strong winds and rain won't be much of a problem.
We've already had 11 typhoons (4 of them Super Typhoons) hit or pass by the Philippines this year, and so far most of the real damage has been in the lowlands... but nothing major or truly catastrophic in a wide scale. edit: This little super typhoon right here (Yoyong) was a bad boy back in Nov. 2004, practically engulfed the Philippines and blasted it with 150 mph winds. It was the 4th typhoon to hit the Philippines in a span of two weeks.
