OOTP 6.51a - Random musings

I've been having so much fun with ootp 6.51a, that I've been wanting to write some non organized notes down somewhere. Well, what better place than FOFC?

I've started in 2006 with Cubbyfan's mlb roster set (how ironic) managing the St. Louis Cardinals. I let the computer manage my minor leagues and left everything that Cubbyfan set in his roster set at his defaults.

2006 Recap
The Cardinals finish with the best record in the majors (102-60), thanks to the 2nd best team batting average (0.280) and the 3rd best pitching era (3.93). We were also 2nd in the league in runs allowed (679).

WINNER : Atlanta

We lose to the Padres 3 games to 2 in a disappointing series. Carpenter was injured in Game 1 of the series and from there we lost confidence.

Atlanta, powered by 18 game winner Tim Hudson and a lineup that featured:

beat the team with the 2nd best record in the league, the Angels.

The Angels had some stars of their own, mainly their pitching staff:

He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! The National League Cy Young Award winner was announced today as well, with St. Louis' right-hander Chris Carpenter taking home the desired trophy. He certainly earned it, he struck fear into hitters all year long. Chris has a record of 21-8 this season, with an ERA of 2.14. In 281.1 Innings he was able to strike out 249 batters. Chris has pitched 4 shutouts and 5 complete games. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!

The 2006 American League Rookie of the Year Award winner is from Texas this season. Joaquin Arias put together impressive numbers for a rookie en route to win the first major award of his career. Let's hope more will follow for this 22 year old ballplayer. This year Arias drove in 51 and scored 97 runs while batting .310 with 14 longballs. Florida's Mike Jacobs as well was almost in tears when he heard the news. The 25 year old first baseman was named the Rookie of the Year Award winner in the National League today. As I recap the past two years (2006 & 2007), I'm going to throw out stats for the most part as hopefully readers will be able to see what's happened up to the point I'm at now (about 70 games into 2009).

What happened to Edmonds?

By the way, I'm extremely jealous. I wish I could have brought OOTP out here.

Not sure why he didn't show up in the 2006 Almanac. Updon further investigation, he was out with a broken hand and didn't make the playoffs. Here is his stats for 2006:

I think it effects trade offers to you by the computer teams.

Yep, week by week.. only playing a game here or two and ALL postseason games. I think it also makes waivers fair. Now if it's my player on waivers, I sim game by game until that's done with.. the same if someone is coming off of the DL.

Edmonds wanted to test FA and with rookie Colby Rasmus hitting 0.324 with 19 HR and 76 RBIs in a full season in AAA, it was time for a changing of the guard.

It was a good move as he was signed by the Dodgers for 2yrs, $1,537,600. He played 95 games total hitting 0.179 with 4 HR and 13 RBIs before being picked up on waivers by Arizona and later retiring to end his career.

Eckstein signed with Seattle for 3 yrs, $5,255,600. No way in the world I was giving him that type of contract, especially when I could sign a good hitting SS named Mark Kiger for $1,240,000.

I was right again as Eckstein hit 0.244 in just 36 games in 2008. Boston claimed him off waivers and then Houston did the same in 2009. I believe I changed directions for both of these players with perfect timing. Hey, this is a business!

Minnesota rode 3 starters throughout the playoffs and beat both Oakland and the Angels - two better regular season teams. These 3 pitched very well for the Twins:

With SP Anthony Reyes out with an injury, we relied on Carpenter, Marquis, Mulder, and Wainright... and of course our hitting. It was one of those moments you never forget in a sports sim. After getting knocked out of the NLDS two years in a row, it was a great feeling winning the World Series!!

Monday 10/30/2008: St. Louis' Carpenter named Cy Young Award
Rich Harden was named the American League Cy Young Award winner today. Oakland's right-hander put up fabulous numbers this year which earned him the highest award a pitcher can receive. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Harden wins the award for the 2nd time in his 4-year career. Chris Carpenter will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the National League to name St. Louis' right-hander the Cy Young Award winner of 2008. His ERA of 2.17 helped him to a 20-8 record this year. He struck out 233 and walked 40 in 249 innings. Chris has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins! Carpenter wins the award for the 2nd time in his 10-year career.

The MVP Award in the American League was handed to Boston's leftfielder Manny Ramirez! Ramirez has hit for a .336 average this season. He has 82 extra base hits along with 349 total bases, resulting in a .621 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 4th in homeruns and 6th in RBI! A season for the ages earned St. Louis' first baseman Albert Pujols the National League MVP Award this year. Albert has gone 192 for 570 (.337) this season, hitting 36 bombs and driving in 120 runs. The 2008 American League Rookie of the Year Award winner is from Minnesota this season. Plouffe has walked 38 times this year and posts a .369 OBP. While batting .326, 191 for 585, he has driven in 81 runs. He's 5th in the American League in batting! The National League Rookie of the Year Award winner was announced today as well, with Philadelphia's third baseman Damien Galvan earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. Funny how Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron's record by 1 HR, then retired. Actually it was pretty neat from a text sim standpoint.

Which brings us to the current year in progress: 2009

...and the loss of a Cardinal great.

Jake Woods gets a new one-year contract worth $350,000 through salary arbitration.
Kiko Calero gets a new one-year contract worth $1,348,571 through salary arbitration.
So Taguchi gets a new one-year contract worth $694,286 through salary arbitration.
Jody Gerut gets a new one-year contract worth $1,378,571 through salary arbitration.
Wes Littleton becomes a free agent.
Chris Carpenter becomes a free agent.
Yadier Molina gets a new one-year contract worth $1,450,000 through salary arbitration.
Brad Thompson gets a new one-year contract worth $1,074,286 through salary arbitration.
Josh Hancock gets a new one-year contract worth $350,000 through salary arbitration.

It's not like he played many years in St. Louis, but how do you replace 2-time Cy Young award winner?

Chris wanted a long term contract and although we offered a top paid pitcher type 4-5 year deal, Chris said thanks but no thanks and wanted to test free agency.
