The Greatest Rock band ever

In the week leading up to the Super Bowl the local classic rock radio station had a "Classic Rock Super Bowl" in which they would play 4-5 songs of two different bands each, then callers would decide which band they liked better and that band would advance in the tournament, or playoffs. Bands like Van Halen and Def Leppard squared off. In the end Floyd and Zepp went head to head. Unfortunately we have more Zepp-heads in the area than Floyd fans, and Zepp won. What a freaking 'jyp. Anyways I figured we could have the same type of thing. I guess a tournament of 32 bands would be good enough. If you guys an come up with some more then go for it. Here are some bands I figure we could include. Now this is Rock and Roll. No Beatles. The Beatles did not rock, they were a good pop band. Not Elvis, he was country. Just bands that F'ing rocked. I took a quick look at the spin top 50 Rock bands of all time and was disgusted by some of the bands they actualy considered to be Rock. Parliament? Are you kidding me? Public Enemy? You have to be joking right?

1. Pink Floyd
2. Guns n' Roses
3. Boston
4. Journey
5. Led Zeppelin
6. The Misfits
7. Bob Seger
8. TOOL
9. Metallica
10. Cream
11. Van Halen
12. Def Leppard
13. AC/DC
14. Fleetwood Mac
15. Alice in Chains
16. The Doors
17. U2
18. The Jimi Hendrix Experience
19. The Rolling Stones
20. KISS
21. The Who
22. Lynyrd Skynyrd
23. Billy Idol
24. Steppenwolf

I guess you guys can come up with another 8, 18, 28, or however many you like. I'm not too into the sonic youth scene, or bands like that. After we decide on a final list well have a tourney set up where we just match each band up with another one on one. Voting can go something like so.

Boston
over
Journey

Van Halen
over
AC/DC

We'll just add up the votes, say 50 people can vote per round (hopefuly this thing will go over well enough to get 50 per round), and we'll advance to the next.

Bragg,

My mistake. I did not realize your genitalia was on your face. What an odd genetic code you must have.

Elvis and the Beatles were every bit as much rock and roll artists as almost any band on your list. My guess is that you don't like them and are excluding them because you think they might win.

The Beatles were the greatest rock bad ever. Not even worth discussing anyone else. I guess that's the end of this thread.

The Beatles definatly were Rock and Roll. But they sucked...

Elvis was definatly Rock and Roll, and he is the King of Rock and Roll. But then again, Chuck Berry is the God of Rock and Roll.

I wouldn't say Elvis is country. Country evolved from Rock and Roll. Elvis is not country, but country derived a lot from Elvis and changed it around.

I agree with astral. Worst. Poll. Ever.

"Huh?"

Country evolved from Rock and Roll.

Buddy Holly is the demigod of Rock and Roll. There's not beating Chuck Berry. Chuck Berry is the only absolute in the universe.

Country did NOT evolve from Rock n' Roll. Country evolved from Bluegrass. Which has been around since the 1800's. If anything Rock evolved from Country.

I don't care what you say, the Beatles did not rock. If you think the fab four rocked, then you have absolutely no idea what that word means. They made incredible music that has stood the test of time. I love listening to their records as much as the next person. However placing the Beatles anywhere outside of Pop is a mistake.

Elvis is Country. Listen to the other country artists of his time. They sound nearly identical to him.

Edit*

Floyd was definetely a Rock n' Roll band. Listen to "The Wall". You can't honestly say Pink Floyd wasn't a Rock n' Roll Icon.

Bragg,

Think you must not be listening to the entire body of work put out by either Elvis or the Beatles.

sab,

Country was around a while before rock.

All Music

edit: Bluegrass evolved from country, not the other way around.

Hmm, how about that. I never knew about Bluegrass music. Maybe because it sounds like some Uncle Jim Bob Joe sings on the porch of his hourse as he whittles.

I stand corrected.

Ok, fine, Elvis may sound like country back then, but he definatly had rock and roll influences. I still say Elvis should be included on any "Rock and Roll" list.

Not only does country predate rock and roll by decades, but I think it's arguable that the first real rock and roll song was Hank Williams' "Move It On Over", which predated the movement by 7 or 8 years. Early rock and roll was really a hybrid of country and blues.

Okay, since you guys didn't take my word for it, maybe this will help.

"The impact of the Beatles - not only on rock & roll but on Western culture - is simply incalculable. As musicians, they proved that rock & roll could embrace a limitless variety of harmonies, structures and sounds; virtually every rock experiment has some precedent on Beatle records."
"Although many of their sales and attendance records have since been surpassed, no group has so radically transformed the sound and meaning of rock & roll."

- Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll

Now, can we end this?

If you don't think the Beatles are rock than you really have not listened to all their music. I suggest picking up the White Album if you want to here their heaviest rock. How can you listen to Helter Skelter and tell me the Beatles are not rock and roll?

The beatles are pop. That doesnt mean that they are not the greatest pop band of all time and possibly the greatest band of all time but they did not rock even on the white album.

The Beatles were one of the hardest rocking bands in the world during their early years. And whether you want to admit it or not, almost every band of any merit (including the Stones) followed their lead in the late '60s. In any case, they rocked as hard or harder than quite few bands on Bragg's original list, including:

Pink Floyd
Boston
Journey
Bob Seger
Fleetwood Mac
The Doors
U2

The fact that while they did it, they were enormously more creative than anyone else in rock and roll, and brought more different musical influences into the genre than probably all the other rock artists in history combined does make them not a rock band.

Remember folks, the word "great" means a lot of things to a lot of people: influential, successful, significant, grand, superior, skillful, etc. We all have different ideas about what makes something or someone "great". Do I agree that the Beatles may be the most influential band of all time? Sure. Do I think they were the greatest band ever? Heck no.

The best band ever isn't even on the list: Queen.

That omission alone totally nullifies any credibility it might have had.
