Question Has anyone had a vasectomy?

I have an appointment for a consultation/vasectomy on Feb. 12th. Any happy or horror stories?

well, the difference between 2 and 0 isn't really a big difference.

OK, I realize this was a big old softball up there easy to take a swing at. So I'll take the high road to make a straight answer to an obviously concerned guy.

I just had mine done in Dec. I was gravely worried going in as well. First off, everything is fully functional. Absolutely no change in sensation, function, etc.

The worst part was immediately after. For about three hours it felt like getting kicked in the nuts, over and over again. At that point I was really regretting the decision not to take the Tylenol 3's they offered and wondering how I would endure 2-3 more days of it. But after those first few hours it wasn't really too bad. The biggest problem is itching. Yes, you can tear things you don't want torn if you don't watch it.

Also, don't buy all that crap that the procedure is painless. One side of mine was done pretty well, but the other side sucked. The needle hurt like hell and the anesthetic didn't take all that well. So it sucked feeling the snipping and pulling. Not unbearable though. Getting a filling or root canal is much worse.

I have no regrets. Especially after my wife thought she might be pregnant again right after the surgery. The sense of dread at that possibility far outweighed what the procedure put me through. If you don't want anymore kids, get the surgery. I'm getting too old for 2 am feedings.

I've always wondered, but always been afraid to ask...

after you have one, do you still ejaculate?

serious question - never quite understood how this whole procedure works.

DD, fear not! Websites are wonderful!

"Will I still produce something when I ejaculate?

Yes. What you ejaculate contains normally 3-5% sperm. The rest is seminal fluid produced by the seminal vesicles/prostate gland. After vasectomy you ejaculate about 95-97% of what you did prior to vasectomy."

Ejaculations are not impacted whatsoever, at least not for me. No drop off in sensations, performance, etc. Just the pain of the procedure, a little downtime after, and a couple very small scars no one (the wife) even notices.

The one bit of advice I was given and will pass on is if you get it done, when the doc says take it easy a couple days, really take it easy. Get a good ice pack and just lay down on the couch for 2-3 days. By day 2 you'll feel able to move about but don't mess with it. I do know other folks had a worse time of it than I, but they usually started back too soon.

Good luck.

Am I the only one cringing in pain during/after Leonidas' story?

Needle in the Nads. Yummy.

I had one shortly after my second son was born in 1996.

I can echo some of the other posts that took the high road:

Procedure and Recovery:

The procedure itself *was* painful. The left side went smoothly, but the right side hurt so damn bad that the urologist actually had to give the area a second injection of anesthesia.

It hurt physically for about 48 hours afterwards...thank goodness for Tylenol + Codeine.

It also hurt the first few times during ejaculation...roughly the first month, to be honest.

FYI....there is still enough sperm there to get your lady pregnant after the procedure...which is why your urologist tells you to use other methods of birth control, and bring in sperm samples a few times. I know of at least one guy who didn't heed the warnings, and wound up with a surprise pregnancy.

Since then...

Long Term Aftermath

None of the other horror stories you may hear are true. Function is fine, length is fine (and actually it swells in the immediate aftermath of surgery), sexual desire is not impacted in the slightest...and yes, as the above paragraph implies, you do still ejaculate after surgery, in the same quantity as before.

I had a vasectomy in 1998. Recovery was three days, with the third only on Tylenol (and I went to work). The psychological side was a little more difficult after it was done than I expected, though not much more intense than deciding to have my favorite tomcat fixed.

Best decision my wife ever made for me, frankly.

dola...

Is your urologist using a scalpel or a laser? I've heard really good things about the laser procedure. According to a buddy of mine who just had it done, there's almost no recovery. He was back at work the next day and having marital relations with his wife on the second day.

I've got some advise. Never, ever cut any part of your body unless absolutely necessary, especially the penis. Haven't cut mine since eight days after birth.

I can vouch for these comments as well. I had mine done a year ago. It was essentially painless, I didn't experience the pain that the other guys talked about. In fact, during the procedure, I was talking football with the doctors.

I agree with those who say to take it easy. In addition, the single thing that I found most helpful was to support that area for a while. I wore a jock strap for about 2 weeks or so afterward. I found that the "kick in the nuts" feeling seemed to happen if I didn't wear the jock. I guess something about the pressure of everything hanging under it's own weight causes that feeling.

Sex is no different after the operation. My doctor recommended waiting a week before getting back to it again. He told me that although I might feel okay, there's a risk that some of the tubes could come loose in there--not worth the risk, in my mind.

Overall, though, I'd recommend it. Good luck!

Yes.
It didn't hurt too much, but I was pretty sore afterward. I had the surgery on Friday, played FoF all weekend (sitting on a pillow and with an ice pack in my lap), and was back at work on Monday.

Well, as it turns out, after I got serious and made the appointment, my wife decided that maybe she was willing to get an iud after all. I told her that if she got her appointment, I would cancel mine. She made her appointment the next day. We'll see how that works, but for now, the little soldiers will continue to patrol.
Thanks to all the mature responders for your input.
