so I had my first MRI yesterday...
The MRI went fine and I thought it was cool when they told me that my girlfriend could sit in the room with me. That was until the tech told me that the procedure would take 27 minutes and my girlfriend could talk all she wants but I couldn't talk back because it would mess up the scan. You can imagine the rest.

The very same thing happened to me...only I didn't mind. I let her talk and talk and talk, and guess what? not once did I have to hear ":are you listening to me?" I just tuned her out and that was it. Seriously though..she was real goodabout it, she works for the MRI company and got me in pretty quickly, they took good care of me.

I too recently had my first MRI. They had me doped out on some sort of drugs, morphine i think, so I don't really remember much. All I remember is very loud noises and I was told it took about 45 minutes.

I slept through mine and keep finding myself waking up and sort of jumping because I didn't know where I was. Most definitely a long, boring process.

I've had a few MRI's in my day. 4, actually, if I count correctly.
I always fall asleep in them. It's always funny, because every time I have one, I tell them, no big, just give me the earplugs and wake me when it's done and they always think I'm joking, and proceed to tell me what to do in case I get nervous, etc. I don't know if I could have MRI's now. I'm not sure about what exactly is in my ankle (titanium, I assume, but I'm not sure) and what bad things might happen if I were to have a scan anywhere on the lower half of my body... /tk

You probably have titanium in your ankle. I have it in my jaw on both sides. It's safe for MRI's. I asked my surgeon that question, and said it's not magentic. As for MRI's, I problably have had around 7-8 in my 22 years of existence. No big deal to me. Last edited by Galaxy : 04-05-2006 at 07:12 PM. |

Had my first Friday and I didn't handle it as well as the rest of you. I never thought of myself as claustrophobic but this pushed every nerve I have. Felt like I was being buried alive and I was counting the seconds till I was out. All in all it took about 45 minutes. I probably would have freaked out after 10 minutes but the nurse was really hot and I couldn't look like a pussy in front of her.

I've only had one, and it was a pretty bad experience. Not from claustrophobia at all though. I was having it on my shoulder thanks to a ton of rotator cuff pain and I guess to focus the scan they basically placed this C-shaped contraption around my shoulder. I was already having trouble laying perfectly still, and this god damn thing was pressing right into the spot that was killing me so I was tensing up from the pain, which made all my muscles slightly shake as time went on, which made the guy stop the scan and give me more warnings about how we'd have to start over. Don't know if the guy was BSing me or not but he said the shoulder is one of the toughest parts to get a clean scan of.
Yeah, didn't like it. Last edited by Logan : 06-07-2009 at 09:00 PM. |

I'm claustrophobic as hell, so when I had one on my head a few months ago it was 45 minutes that felt like 4 hours. It really is an experience in sensory deprivation.

I have to have one every year or two to check on my brain tumor. It always puts me to sleep or close to it.

Um. 9, I think. Last one was on my hand last October. That one was the first one I didn't fall asleep. In order to get an MRI of your hand, they usually have you lay on your stomach with your arm extended so it's like you're raising your hand. Then they lock in your hand. Bothered the part of my hand that hurt, but even more bothered my shoulder by keeping it torqued in a funny position (I've had previous surgeries on both shoulders and they have a tendency to slide out on their own). Next 2 doctor's visits: neurologist end of the month and ankle surgeon mid-July...give it time... Quote:
I believe it's come up before, maybe in a FTB? Or some other hospital thread where we discussed doctors/medical experiences? /tk

Hm. I swear I saved an old blog post about it, but I can't find it now. I have an Acoustic Neuroma. When "they" talk about an increased risk of brain tumors from cell phone usage, that's what I have (not that it is necessarily from cell phone usage). It is benign, and essentially the only side effect is a loss of hearing on one side (and the occasional tinnitus). Eventually I will need to have it removed because it could get large enough that it presses on the next nerve, which would cause facial paralysis. The technology is advancing every day, and there are a few procedures involving radiation(?) that basically fry the tumor and it is an out-patient procedure. For now it is small enough that the risks of removing it are greater than the risks of leaving it in. I have a digital copy of my MRIs, and I would post a picture of it, but I have no idea what I'm looking at. Maybe EF27 can look at them.

Well, I have a few hundred or thousand images, of which I imagine only about 5 are relevant. I just don't know which 5 those are.

Look at it this way, if you post a few hundred images, you'll keep MBBF from browsing right-wing websites looking for his next posting fodder for a while. You'd be doing us all a service!

Hater. I'm actually somewhat of an amateur radiologist. Translated, my wife is a radiologist that works from home and I like to peek over her shoulder from time to time and try to figure out if I can see any problem areas. I'm actually getting pretty good at it. I also stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. |
