2006 MLB Thread
The real opening day is today and we got a bunch of games going on. I wish I got the STL/PHI game today so I could see if Rollins can continue his hitting streak.

Rant 1: Why is the SF/SD Game on frigging ESPN2, in favor of the ATL/LA game on ESPN? The former is not in HD - the latter is, which really sucks.

Because I'm a Giants fan... I dunno - I figure Bonds is a bigger sell than Atlanta or LA, especially given ESPN's never ending hype machine. |

F&#$&*#$ing Angelos.
Or: Why the Nationals-Mets are blacked out, despite the fact that I can't get the game any other way (including paying for Extra Innings) |

Mets come out on top. Should of been a tied game when LoDuca dropped the ball at the plate but Soriano was still called out. David Wright, my pick for NL MVP went deep. LETS GO METS!!!!!!

Ugh. My top 2 hated NL teams playing in the same game.
Can we have a tie?

Page 2's preview of the season - its actually funny. Some of my favorites: April 6 -- Roger Clemens holds a joint press conference with Brett Favre just to let everyone know that they're still deciding on whether to retire. The suspense becomes too much for everyone to bear, and the nation erupts into mass chaos and anarchy. April 10 -- Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds christens the new Busch Stadium in his own special way by diving needlessly for a routine fly ball in St. Louis' home opener. May 16 -- A Red Sox front office employee drives struggling third baseman Mike Lowell way out into the country, lets him run around in a field for a few minutes, and then shoots him. June 11 -- Chicago White Sox players admit that after a full season with him, and despite his role in helping them win a World Series ring, they're starting to hate A.J. Pierzynski now, too, just like everyone else. July 3 -- The Yankees lose in Cleveland in the bottom of the ninth when the Indians' Travis Hafner tags up and scores from first on shallow fly ball to Johnny Damon. July 14 -- The Mets and Orioles go to court over who gets to sleep with Anna Benson to collect on her promise to sleep with all of her husband's teammates if he ever cheated on her. July 27 -- The 51-52 Pirates trade promising young players Zach Duke, Paul Maholm, Oliver Perez, Jose Castillo and Brad Eldred for veteran players. "You only get so many chances to finish a season above .500 and we haven't done it since 1992," says general manager Dave Littlefield. "So we're going to go for it, even if we have to mortgage our future to do so." July 28 -- The language tutor for the Mets' Kaz Matsui teaches the second baseman what "bust" means in English. July 29 -- Despite the trade deadline being just two days away, Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd says he has not received a single call from other teams inquiring about the availability of his players.

LOL!
April 3 -- The Mets beat the Nationals 19-4 in their home opener, thanks to a record eight inside-the-park home runs. Washington's Alfonso Soriano gets the start in left field for the Nationals, but stands beside second baseman Jose Vidro the entire game, leaving a gaping hole in the outfield. April 11 -- New Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca throws out two baserunners trying to steal in a victory over the Nationals, eclipsing the best season total former Mets catcher Mike Piazza had during his entire tenure with the team. April 17 -- Red Sox adviser Bill James unveils a theorem he says explains why Boston general manager Theo Epstein is such a drama queen. July 7 -- With the bases loaded, two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and the White Sox trailing the Red Sox by three, Jim Thome nearly connects with ferocious swings on three straight pitches, exhibiting just the power potential Chicago acquired him for. July 16 -- In a series against the White Sox, the Yankees are shut out on back-to-back nights by former Yankees Javier Vazquez and Jose Contreras. Everyone everywhere has a good laugh. And my favs: September 19 -- The Braves clinch their 15th consecutive division title with a victory over the Nationals. Atlanta fans are so excited that nearly two playoff tickets are purchased within hours. September 23 -- The Yankees clinch the American League East, and Derek Jeter is widely lauded for his leadership skills in somehow finding a way to guide the talent-starved, $200 million ball club to yet another playoff berth. That's a great article .

And Brad Lidge came in and slammed the door on the ninth for a 1-0 Astros victory. What World Series hangover for LOL?

As a firm Cardinals hater, it drives me nuts to know that I have very little I can criticize on your team. But 2nd base is one, regardless of opening day... Actually, as an OKC guy, I'd really like to see Junior Spivey do well. |

It was just great to see Miles do well in his debut. Spivey made a comment yesterday that made me respect him.. something along the lines he's going to go down to AAA, work hard, and make it back up to the bigs. |

Yeah, all I know about him suggests Spivey's a hard-worker and a good guy. He won't ever be the star that some thought he might be at one point, but he can be a solid player with some useful tools. He's really struggled lately, though. |

Freaking Wagner. Reminding me of Looper of last year. Too bad he blew it, the rookie Bannister pitched pretty well. Went 5 1/3 of no hit baseball, then gave up a 3 run shot to Nick Johnson. Wagner gives up a game tying HR in the 9th to Ryan Zimmerman.

Good debut tonight by O's rookie Nick Markakis: Home run and three walks. I think he only swung once in his first three AB's, and his homer was on a 3-0 count on a pitch he could've taken for walk number four.

I don't know if it's just me, but isn't it weird that the Jays have used 3 catches so far this year when they signed Ben Molina in the offseason?
I've watched parts of their four games, and have seen Molina, Jason Phillips, and Gregg Zaun start 3 games... |

What I liked about today is that these are the games that the Cubs always seem to lose against the Cards. They go out and take the first game of a series, but in a tight game the pen would implode and the Cubs would lose in the late innings. So far I really like what I've seen from Cedeno at SS. He has been a little too lax in the field for my tastes, but his hustle and production from the bottom of the order have been impressive. |
