Sutton Resigns
A sad end for a great coach. It seems to me the OSU program hasn't been the same or achieved its potential since the 2001 plane crash. Good luck, Coach.

He didn't resign. He is taking a leave of absence for the rest of this year (any wins and losses will still count for him) while he gets treatment for his health and relapse to drinking. They'll then decide what to do after the season. I believe it was erroneously reported that he resigned.
Either way, it's too bad. Personally, I don't fault the guy too much. He's had massive health problems. The drugs weren't working, and he made some stupid decisions. Luckily, no one was hurt. Unfortunately, though, it will hurt his reputation and further lower his chances of getting in the Hall where he belongs. |

DOLA BTW, you do know they went to the Final Four a couple of years ago, right? And they did so with a bunch of transfers that nobody else really wanted. I'd say that's surpassing their potential. Last edited by Cuckoo : 02-15-2006 at 10:57 PM. |

What percentage of D1 coaches are alcoholics? I would guess it's more than 25%, possibly even more than 50%.

Isn't Eddie Sutton's major legacy that of repeated recruiting violations? That's what I think of when I hear his name. He's just Jerry Tarkanian with a drawl, and no NCAA titles.
Can't say I admire anything about that guy.

No offense, but it sounds like you only have passing knowledge of him, far from enough to base any admiration or lack thereof. |

He happened to be the coach at Kentucky when the institutionalized-for-decades-horsemen-paying-players routine was shown to the nation. I don't think he had problems at any other school - hence 'repeated' is probably not the right word. His legacy is taking 4 schools to the NCAA tourney, and 3 to the final four. EDIT: didn't really change anything, just exercising my freedom to edit.

I bet you've admired plenty of them. You probably just didn't know it. |

I agree. I was living in Kentucky when he was there and all the shit was going down. He was one of the many reasons I absolutely hate UK basketball, past, present and future. I remember a radio interview the day after a surprising loss and he was so drunk that he was begging the fans to forgive him and apologizing profusely for their poor performance. In all of my experiences, I had never seen such a sick display the UK coaches and media had to put on for their retarded fans. So there. |
