FOF oddity - Can anyone explain?
I was trailing 10-7 late in the 3rd quarter and then this play happened:
Offense: Field Goal Formation. 4-04-MAD06 (00:18) BOS 4 Garland attempted a 23 yard field goal and succeeded. Penalty: MAD - Roughing the Kicker. Penalty was declined. Why did I decline the penalty? Isn't this an automatic first down?

I could see it if it was running into the kicker (which would be half the distance, so still a yard short of a first down). But roughing should be an automatic first down at the 3, and you're at the end of the third quarter (so time's not going to run out), so it sure seems like a bad call.

the old philosophy of not wanting to take points off the board.

I seriously think this falls under coaches decision. Low scoring game, still a quarter left. Do you take the tie ballgame? Or do you take a chance and go for the lead? Tough call, I'm not sure it is an AI error for accepting it. If you had taken the penalty you could have just ended up settling for another FG, or could have turned it over. Not taking the penalty doesn't lock in the fact that you are getting a TD there.

This has been a point of much debate the few times it's come up in IHOF. I can see both sides of the argument, so i think it's ultimately a gray area.

Actually the more the think about it as a coach, I would take the points off the board ONLY if my team was down more than 4 points, or up 10 or 15-17. Anything else and I'm taking the points.
