SDSU EXPECTATIONS
New Athletic Director Tony Gwynn and Head of Basketball operations SirFozzie expect that this is the year we break the .500 mark. It does seem that this team is on the brink of something special. NEW FRESHMAN Frankly, none of the three recruits that we signed last year needed to be redshirted, so we didn't. BYRON GREENE- #36 SF Albany, NY Byron seems to have a sixth sense of offensive awareness and jumping that most college players will never posess. The weakest part of his game is his potential, but that is on average with his fellow players. ANTWAN SILVA- #9 C Vacaville, CA We are pretty sure after seeing Antwan practice that he doesn't have the capability of throwing the knuckle ball like the person who his high school is named after, Wilbur Wood. Antwan's skills maybe a little green, but school work is a breeze so he didn't receive a redshirt. His potential is very good, and his defense should get him some minutes this year. Not a scorer. BOBBY WALLS- #13 SG Charlo, MT None of Bobby's classmates or his coach can even find Charlo on the map. However, most of the players in the Mountain West Conference can't find Montana on a map. (oops, me bad). Bobby has raw offensive talent, he can shoot, pass, score, and rebound. He played the point in high school. In his time here at San Diego, he will need to refine his instincts and learn defense because this kid has NBA potential. THE STAFF No change SCHEDULE We changed three games, it's an easy schedule. We are at home a lot. |

The First Four Weeks
Our season starts against Santa Clara in Santa Clara. We led at the half by one, 34-33 and hung on to win 72-70. Senior Guard/Forward Ben Murray led the Aztecs in scoring with 17, pounced on 8 boards and had 4 assists. Courtney Jones added 15 points, while Quentin Campbell had 9 rebounds. Valery Phillips had 5 assists the first game back after last years injury.
SDSU (1-0) Our home opener was against the Auburn Tigers. For Auburn, it was their season opener. We would like to thank all the Alabama Crimson Tide fans for all the cards and letters of support. We led at the half, 37-33. Better than that, a star was born. Freshman Bobby Walls exploded for 9 at the break. If Auburn was looking for a cupcake, they need to look elsewhere. In a game that both teams will not forget, San Diego fought Auburn untill double overtime before Auburn wiggled free, 102-97. Tied at 80 in regulation and 88 after the first ot, Freshman standout Bobby Walls had 28 points in his home debut, including an eye dropping 9 for 9 from the line, along with 4 assists. Ben Murray followed up his solid opener with 20 points and 7 rebounds. SDSU (1-1) The 2-0 Portland Pilots were next in Portland. We played forty solid minutes of basketball stretching a 38-23 halftime lead to a 70-42 drubbing. Ben Murray continues to take advantage of his starting position with a double double, 20 points and 10 rebounds. Valery Phillips added 14 points and 7 assists. We grounded the Pilots to 20% from thefield, a woeful 11 for 55. SDSU (2-1) UTEP (1-2)was next at home. Our former WAC rivals waxed us. We were at one point down 24-8. We did make a game of it however, trailing only by ten at the break, 39-29. The Miners were too much for us at the end, 75-61. Senior Guard Reggie Mcrae came off the bench to lead us with 21. Valery Phillips also played a solid game with 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. SDSU (2-2) Richmond (1-3) was next. Fans came dressed in Spyderman outfits, fun stuff. We outpaced them in the first half, 36-24, then played on cruise control to win 66-60. Quentin Campbell, who had not shown scoring touch beforem dumped in 18. Courtney Jones added 9 and 7 boards. SDSU (3-2) The Dons of San Francisco(4-1) were next. It was a tight, gut wrenching game, leads were exchanged many times until late when we shot our foul shots. A 38-35 halftime game turned into a 85-76 win for us. Courtney Jones had 21 for us along with 6 rebounds. Phenom Bobby Walls added 14 and 6 assists. SDSU (4-2) No recruits yet. And the best news, our CRI is 82! |

Ah!
Heh - that's a tiny private school - I've never even heard of them having a basketball team.
I guess it would make sense then that Greene went to SDSU. ![]() ~rpi-fan ![]()

That's funny, I thought I posted a response, oh well.
Besides RPIFan, San Diego is much warmer than Albany, but not as nice as Glens Falls ![]() |

December: Let's not discuss it
After our exciting 4-2 start, we crashed to earth. SDSU finished it's non conference schedule dropping five out it's last six to go into it's Mountain West season 5-7.
The lowlight of the month were back to back losses to 1-7 Campbell at home and 1-8 Western Illinois on the road. at Birminghan Southern L 82-77 vs Harvard W 67-64 vs Campbell L 72-52 at W. Illinois L 75-49 vs Charlotte L 70-64 vs UC-Irvine L 68-55 Just terrible. We also lost our starting point guard Valery Phillips for up to two months with a broken wrist against Campbel and his on court generalship is missed. |

January
Confrerence play opened as bad as Non Conference ended.
Thru the end of Jan., we are 1-8 in conference and 5-8 outside for a record of 6-16, or 2 wins in our last 16 games. The Ugly Highlights: Dec 29 @Air Force L 66-73 Dec 31 @Colo. State L 67-86 Jan 2 New Mexico W 78-67 Jan 9 @BYU L 50-88 Jan 14 @Utah L 67-75 Jan 18 @UNLV L 52-68 Jan 21 Columbia L 73-80 Jan 26 Utah L 64-73 (OT) Jan 28 BYU L 64-78 Any real highlights? Yes, super Freshman Bobby Walls had 21 in our victory over New Mexico and Craig Ewing filled in admirably for the injured Valery Phillips, leading us with 21 against Columbia. Ben Murray really has made the most of his senior year, with 17 in our loss to Colorado State and 18 in a valiant effort against UNLV. Ultimately, weak defense and some of the worst free throw shooting killed this team. |

All good things must end
And bad things too.
Feb 1 Air Force W 60-48 Feb 4 Colo. State L 68-74 Feb 9 UNLV L 63-84 Feb 10 @New Mexico L 61-62 Feb 16 @Wyoming W 70-59 Feb 19 Wyoming L 66-73 Feb 23 #24 Wake Forest L 46-84 Feb 25 @Morgan State L 57-71 Valery Phillips returned to put in minutes and Bobby Walls showed that he has some raw talent, but this team never jelled after the season started. They played better as a group in the closing month of the year, but not enough to finish better than 8-21. |

2006 Mountain West Championship
We entered as a woosy 8th seed, UNLV the 19-11 conference champion heavily favored for the automatic bid. There's a reason they play the games however.
For 30 minutes SDSU dominated UNLV, at one point led by 15, 60-45, in the second half. Then Bobby Walls spotted Phil Mickleson in the crowd in Vegas, and just like Phil, realized he was winning. UNLV stormed back over the last ten minutes to actually lead 68-64 in the final minute. Senior Ben Murray gathered his team together, and along with UNLV missing free throws, tied the game at 71 and had a chance to win as time expired. Tired and overmatched, SDSU succumbed in the extra period, 86-81. Ben Murray, playing his final competitive game ever, scored 21 and had 3 assists. Without any question, Murray was the bedrock of the team this year especially after Valery Phillips decided to forgo his senior year. The Results: Quarters (1)UNLV 86 (8) SDSU 81 (7)Colo. State 87 (2) BYU 71 (3)Wyoming 60 (6) New Mexico 55 (4)Utah 91 (5)Air Force 64 Semis (4)Utah 79 (1)UNLV 68 (7)Colo State 87 (3) Wyoming 80 Finals (7)Colo State 75 (4)Utah 60 Colorado State entered the tournament at 10-19 and gets the 16th seed out West |
