Ugueth Urbina Charged with Attempted Murder

Yikes.
Quote:
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ugueth Urbina was arrested on a charge of attempted murder, police said on Tuesday.

Last month, Urbina and a group of men allegedly wielded machetes at several employees at his family's ranch, and poured gasoline on them in an attempt to set them on fire. Five workers were injured, and one of them suffered burns on the back and right arm, police said.

One victim, Argenis Farias, accused Urbina of being among the attackers.

Urbina, who was detained late Monday at another home on the outskirts of Caracas, has insisted he had nothing to do with the violence at the ranch.

Urbina's lawyer said the pitcher was sleeping at the time and was not involved. The authorities said Urbina would be formally charged once he appears before a judge.

Urbina became a free agent after playing the last season with the Phillies.

"This of course can in some way hurt his career as a professional ballplayer, and all will depend on the way in which he is brought before justice," said defense lawyer Jose Luis Tamayo.

Urbina was with his mother and other relatives when the police came with an arrest warrant, Tamayo said. He called the arrest "inexplicable."

"Aside from whether a person is guilty of a crime or not, if there is no danger of flight or obstruction of justice, that person has a right to be tried while free," Tamayo said.

The lawyer said Urbina has cooperated with the authorities all along, noting he has come to the police voluntarily to provide testimony.

It was the second violent incident in a year for the Urbina family. Urbina's mother was kidnapped by drug traffickers in September 2004 and held for $6 million. She was rescued five months later in a mountainous zone in southern Venezuela.

Urbina has a 44-49 record with 237 saves and a 3.45 ERA in 11 seasons.

So much for the sympathy about his mom's kidnapping. When I saw the headline, I thought maybe the two were related - some sort of revenge or something.

In Urbina's defense, good help is hard to find.

It's possible they are related. I'm not ready to rule that out.

So, if Ugie invites you to his family ranch, just don't go.

On the one hand, know the history he's had of being a target and the corruption in Venezuela, you really have to go with the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in this case.

On the other hand, If he had a freakin' clue he would have gotten himself and his family out of Venezuela a long time ago and not gone back without an armed posse, preferably not one armed with gasoline and machettes.

I have a very good friend from Venezuela, who now lives in the States 12 months of the year due to the curruption and crime in Venezuela. He has told me some horrific stories of kidnappings and random murders. I am putting my money on it that Ugy found out that his "help" assisted in his mother's kidnapping.

Pretty much what my friend from Venezuela says as well.

Urbina was not a serious candidate to be the closer in Philly.

If he ever gets out I'll bet the folks in Philly will listen to what he has to say.

I'm sure the Phillies appreciate the headlines leading with, "Phillies Pitcher Arrested..." He's not a Phillie anymore!

I wouldn't worry about interviews. After this, he won't be getting many calls. Attempted murder? He couldn't even finish the job, and he had a machete and fire! Not the kind of guy I want pitching the 9th inning for my team. He's apparently missing that killer instinct.

Maybe the Braves will sign him. The Tomahawk Chop adapts well to other weapons.

I wonder if that could be considered "conduct detrimental to the team"? If so, it's a bad week for Philly sports...
