Ultimate Doom and it's impact on video game history.
I've been rumaging through some old games and found an old copy of Ultimate Doom. I've been thinking as of late how far we've come since the days of Doom.
I've also been thinking about how big DOOM was and how it influenced and launched the PC video game revolution. Doom brought about the concept of multi player play, the ''high end'' graphics influenced the creation of faster processors and soon 3d graphx cards, the non stop action influenced many clones, which some will become successful (Hexen, Quake and, Unreal, duke nuked et ala). and not to mention the senators and other politicians who tried to get DOOM and related games banned, they spread the word further. So to cut it short: My thesis is: Doom single handedly influenced video game design and concepts and, is the most influencial videogame of all time. All comments and, counter arguements will be appreciate.

From the action side of things, I don't think there is any question.
I think you can follow a different path back for RPG and strategy games. Also, someone's going to be a smartass and throw out Pong . Last edited by jeff061 : 10-30-2005 at 01:09 PM. |

Perhaps the most influencial videogame of all time...but single handedly influenced videogame design and concepts? PC games were around long before Doom, and most of the genres were not affected by the release of Doom at all.

At the time ( circa 93-96), I think Doom was the only recognizeable name in PC gaming (I could be wrong though). Other than Doom the only pc game I could remember at the time were Flight Simulator and Oregon Trail. I think Doom did revolutionize pc gaming as a new platform. Sure there were many pc games at the time but Doom influenced other companies to ''fly higher.''

I remember Civ1 as a pretty big name in PC gaming back at the time. Also, I could be wrong about the timing, but I think the X-wing series and Wing Commander series were big back then. I agree that Doom was an influential game, but I don't think it was as influential as to say that it was key to all PC gaming. There were other big time PC games back then as well. |

Doom is probably my most favorite video game of all time. In 98 my wife gave me the whole series for Christmas, and it included over 1000 WADs, not counting a few hundred I had already downloaded. I finally finished all of them this summer, took me 6 1/2 years. It was a sad day when I finished the last one.
It's an easy game to start (doesn't take 10 years to start like games today) and setup, and it has a large support community. Some WADs required you to just blast everything, but alot of player created WADs required you to solve puzzles and work your way out of tough situations with little ammo. I'm thinking about replaying all the old WADs I finished in the Doomsday engine (graphically enhanced version of Doom). |

You really cannot say that a game like pong is that influential. Because if he hadn't invented pong, someone else would have.

DOOM did turn the FPS shooter into a very popular genre. Wolf 3D and tohers came before it, but DOOM brought the whole genre to the mainstream. Probably the most inlfuencial FPS in FPS history.
To boil it down to just one game to encompass all of video game history as the most influential? The topic itself was way too broad to make any game "the most influential ever". There's just too many games who could claim such a thing, from their impact on gaming business to their revolutionizing their genre to influencing design in other genres, etc. etc. Too many angles from too many games. But if we're limiting it to a FPS that inlfuenced the FPS genre, yeah, DOOM was probably the most impoartant one. |

I think it was called The Depths of Doom Trilogy (is what the manual says). It has Doom 1, Doom 2, Ultimate Doom and Master Levels. I checked and it actually has about 2000 WADs (probably around 3000 levels). |

I actually think the most influential game ever was the Atari Version of ET. It did so many things on so many different levels in the game industry.

I was selling Amigas back in the early '90s, and the game with the biggest influence on the gaming industry was X-Wing. Mostly because it showed that the PC was a viable gaming platform in addition to a good business platform, and I watched Amiga (and Atari ST) sales decline from that point on. That's when the PC became the dominant gaming platform.
