The Movies ..... The Thread ..... The Game

Looks like the November 8th release date is still on.

As much as I would like to take a wait and see aproach I can't after deciding not to get Civ4 this week.

Anyway I am looking for some info on PreOrdering the game.

At game stop they are selling 4 versions of the game. I like the free 3 Day shipping and bonus disk feature. Does anyone know the difference between the "The Premier edition", "The collectors Edition, and the regular edition?

http://www.gamestop.com/search.asp?c...d=the+movies&a

Is there a better site to preorder this game from?

Thanks, and I look forward to reading all "The Movies" FOFC posts this thread will generate. Funny how many posts about The MoviesI have seen in other threads.

Alos, do you think the strategy guide would be worth the money?

I generally don't think they are worth it anymore. There are sites out there that have (or will have) full walkthroughs within a week or two.

I always like to check out gamefaqs.com, although I sometimes end up reading ahead and blowing some of the endings to games.

I never buy guides anymore since gamefaqs.com usually has all of the info that you'd find in a guide and more.

Something tells me the included game manual is going to be all but 10 pages long.

Most are these days.

The game will probably start off like every other game. Start you off slow and easy and introduce new things 1 at a time (think of it as a series of tutorials) until you are dealing with everything. To be perfectly honest, I rarely even crack open a game manuel anymore and I usually find my way around a new game easily. (Besides, gamefaqs.com usually has a bunch of walkthroughs and such before I even buy a game.)

how's the AI?

The Movies sounds pretty cool, but I worry that it might be one of those games like Black and White or The Sims - something that's a lot of fun for about 3 days, and then becomes boring. I hope I'm wrong.

Anyone have a clue what the difference is in between the 3 editions? Will one include a big game manual and maybe some charts?

1) The Premiere edition
2) The Collectors edition
3) The regular edition---> $10.00 less

I can't even find out if these are CD or DVD at the gamestop site.

I think the Premiere edition and the Collector's edition are the same thing. I can't find any info on the "Collector's Edition", though. The Premiere edition comes with some extra costumes, backgrounds, music and a mini-guide with tips and such. I'll probably be getting the Premiere edition.

For me the must is the bonus disk so I can create my own stars. I did notice at EB games they called it a demo disk. Could this be a preview of an expansion disk?

The high end versions are DVD versus multiple CDs, which really only matters for loading to me.

I presume that the bonus disk is just to tide you over and allow you make actors now, while waiting for the game to come out in a few weeks.

You can download Starmaker now. http://www.themoviesplanet.com/

You have to sign up for the site (free, of course), but once you do you can download the Starmaker program. Plus it has a ton of videos there. More than any other site I've seen.

I have this concern as well, but I find this game very intriguing. I can't wait to hear some impressions (and hopefully some impressions after playing the game for a week or two.)

I hope so. It has the earmarks to be a major disappointment, though. It would be great if it lives up to the hype.

I'm with you here. I have really high expectations for this one and think it could be a game I could get a lot of playing time with, but after Black and White, I won't buy it on the day it is released.

Anyone else think of that game called "3D Movie Maker" or something? It had some purple guy with a big nose on the front of the box... and you could make movies with different scenes, actors, actions, etc. You could even record stuff on a microphone to use as dialogue. If this game is anything like that, I'll love it.

Is this developed by the same folk(s) who did "Hollywood Mogul"?

No. Hollywood Mogul is a one man operation (I believe). The Movies is made by Peter Molyneux and his Lionhead Studios.

I loved that game.. me and my friends would spend hours making movies.

Any predictions on the rating scores? I'll go with a 9.4 from IGN and a 9.2 from Gamespot. Should be a fantastic game. We'll see!

It's Molyneux... I've been burnt too badly by him in the past to ever trust him again. If I get it, it's going to be after a long, long wait.

Basically Molyneux's games come out with a lot of hype and a lot of expectation and they fail to live up to it. The games are usually okay, and maybe even are fun for a while, but it's nothing like what you expected you were getting.

Black & White I found boring, Fable was broken in that if you didn't go magic, you were screwed and it was insanely short... not the epic trendsetting action-RPG that it was being hyped as... etc.

Ok Molyneux = Black and White. I see where that causes concern..

So possibly we'll get a terrific concept horribly executed and never finished.. great.

I'm really looking forward to this game. I was a bit disappointed with Black & White and I haven't tried Black & White 2 yet, but I really enjoyed Dungeon Keeper.

I’ve been obsessed over this game for about a year now. With all the new videos and the video walk-thru (http://videogames.yahoo.com/gameprev...e=0&eid=400603) I don’t think it will be a disappointment. For those who are interested the Lionhead forums for the movies have a decent community:

http://allboards.lionhead.com/forumdisplay.php?f=46

We have less then two weeks until the game is released so I will for sure give you my opinion when it comes out.

Yeah I had the same obsession over Fable... and that turned out to be a crushing disappointment on so many levels.

Consider yourself warned.

FWIW, I thought Fable was great and played through it twice (once without magic). I definately got my money's worth out of it.

And I've seen PLENTY of gameplay video on The Movies. So much so that I'm pretty sure I know what I'll be getting. Those who have not seen the videos of the game play and the plethora of screenshots might be building up the game in their heads passed reality (notice I said "might be" not "are")

I didn't really get around to playing my copy much. The previews in the magazines that I've read were incredibly tempting, and after it's release, I ended up letting a buddy of mine borrow the game.

While I suppose the game does have it's high points, from the little time I spent with it, my buddy has apparently deemed Fable to be "The most fantastic demo he's ever played."

I'm really crossing my fingers on future releases, though I'm probably not going to be inclined to sink dollars into a pre-order for awhile.

So are you guys more interested in the business simulation side of it, or the movie making part? Personally, I find the simulation side more appealing and it's where I plan to spend the most time. The movie making part seems like it will be a nice diversion every so often.

now the question is....should I try preordering it (to squeeze it in before I can't). As much as I'm looking forward to this game, I'm also a bit skeptical. Civ was a no brainer for me to preorder, but this one makes me think.

I'll stop by one of the stores tonight and see if they're still taking preorders. If so, I'll get in on it. If not, I'll have to take my chances on Wednesday afternoon.

Any chances on Wal-Mart putting the game out at midnight tomorrow night?

Gamespy review is out, a 3.5/5. http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/the-movies/665203p1.html

I'm not liking that there are concerns with micromanagement and the interface. I'm still going to get it when it's released.

didn't see it mention but, Best Buy is offering a deal where if you buy the movies, you get a free movie valued at $9.99

Not 100% sure if that deal is everywhere or certain areas...

I'm not liking that there are concerns with micromanagement and the interface. I'm still going to get it when it's released.
Yikes! That review is like a warning siren. As I was reading it, I was encouraged by the complaints about micromanagement because most run-of-the-mill reviewers are going to be turned off by the "sim" elements that I like in games like FOF. But as soon as I read the part about your stars getting stressed out and having to go the bar and you have to pull them out to get back on the set, I started having Inside the Park Baseball flashbacks of getting into a bar fight with Steve Kuffrey.

This review seems to indicate that my greatest fears about this game are realized: that it was going to end up being a hokey, make-your-own-internet-movie game than a realistic movie/studio management game.

Here's hoping Carey at Hollywood Mogul can finish HM3 before I die.

While I wish that the game had more elements of a studio management game, I will be happy with just making movies, I think. The game isn't going to be everything I'd hoped for, but it'll be enough to keep me entertained.

As much as I loved Hollywood Mogul 2, I got most of my fun from just making really crappy movies just to see how many people would go see them. I found that I ultimately didn't care very much about how much money I had, nor did I really care about trying to fit my films within my budget. I just liked writing descriptions, hiring actors and crew, and then seeing what happened. If HM3 ever gets done, I'll certainly get it, but I think The Movies is going to give me the same kind of movie-making joy that HM2 did, and I'll get to actually see my movies this time.

I intend to enjoy The Movies for what it is. I'm just glad that I didn't spring for the Premiere Edition because, now that I've read that Gamespy review, I can't see putting out $60 for it.
