Original Dream Team Reunion/Christian Laettner
Magic Johnson just said on the Best Damn Sports Show that Christian Laettner shouldn't be invited to the original dream team reunion because "his game was weak".
Do you think this is fair?

I voted yes, but I do agree that Christian Laettner's pro game was weak. His college game is an entirely different story. With that said, it is still not nice thing to single out one person and basically humiliate him in this manner.

Magic is just begging Laettner to play the "Magic shouldn't be invited to the Dream Team reunion because he has HIV" card.
Actually, though, I don't care about the dream team reunion in the slightest so I'm not voting. Hopefully McDonald's comes out with 50 new cups of it, though. That's the main thing I remember from back then, anyway. Hype and merchandise. |

Why doesn't Magic shutup. It's not like Laettner would want to be there anyway. And while he's been no star, he lasted a good while in the NBA as a role player over the past few years, no?

ummm yes, it is a reunion. He was a part of that team. So going with the Magic "Asshat" philosophy, even if you played for the team during those years the reunion was for, you can't come because your game was weak? Isn't that personal opinion anyways.

I believe he was referring to Laettner's "game" in terms of being able to pick up chicks who would inevitably give him a life-threatening disease. On those terms, yes, by comparison, Laettner's game was as weak as a Magic Johnson talk show.

Your poll question is different from the question you pose in your post.
Anyway, what the hell? Is he talking about Laettner's game in the Olympics, or his NBA career? |

Wow. He said that? My respect level for Magic Johnson just dropped dramatically. Like Antmeister says, you don't just single a guy out like that. Way harsh. Laettner was/is a good basketballer, his game just didn't translate to the NBA the way it appeared it would back in his Duke days.

That was totally uncalled for...regardless of what he has done with his career (or lack thereof), he was a part of the original Dream Team and should be included.
Besides, he was the hottest basketball player ever and us girls need some eye candy to look at!!!! |

Whoa whoa whoa, the poll question is just being invited to a reunion of the Dream Team, not Dreamy Guy team.

Agree on the first part. As for the second, you are aware he bats for the other team, right? I guess on a philisoopical note, does this make women less attracted to men?

I hate Laettner, so I said no. Otherwise, I would have said yes.
On the other hand, who gives a rat's ass about the reunion? Last edited by Kodos : 10-06-2005 at 08:35 AM. |

Even at 35 years old last season, Christian Laettner was a pretty decent player. I mean, of course it helped that he played on a stacked Miami team, but he shot nearly 60 percent from the floor last year. Up until the last 4 or 5 years, he was a pretty decent 3-point shooter for a big man, too.
Nobody would ever put Laettner in the same class as the guys who were on that Olympic team, but he's put together a solid career for 13 seasons. Why in the world does Magic Johnson need to call him out like that? Maybe the players didn't have a lot of respect for Laettner 13 years ago because he was just a kid to them, but you'd think that Magic Johnson would be mature enough to let that go and keep his mouth shut. Laettner's game was weak? Hell, if you compared anybody coming out of college back then to the rest of the Olympic team, their game would've looked weak. If you had picked 90% of the other players in the NBA at the time, their game would've looked weak, too. So what? Laettner was a member of the team, and regardless of how much he contributed to that gold medal, there's no reason for Magic Johnson to say this stuff now. The short version of my speech goes like this: "Asshat."

Speaking of Laettner's shot, I passed by Thomas Hill the other day, and he's still crying.

So helping facilitate the infamous freeze-out in the 1985 NBA Playoffs is deemed honorable and justified by you?

Should Magic have said what he said? No
Is (Was?) Christian Laettner's game weak in the NBA? HELL YEAH I don't know why the lovefest for Laettner has come from all of a sudden but the Christian Laettner I remember during his time when he was in Minnesota and Atlanta was a complete idiot |

That's pretty peculiar, considering that he was on some terrible Minnesota teams, and he was one of the top two or three players on the team in Atlanta (and those were playoff years for the Hawks). I wouldn't call this a lovefest anyway, though. To average 66 games per year, 30 minutes a game, over 13 years in the NBA is a pretty impressive feat. I don't think anybody's saying that Christian Laettner is a great player. It's just that he hasn't been so bad that he deserves to get called out the way Magic did it. Besides, who is Magic comparing Laettner to anyway? Himself? Jordan? Bird? Ewing? It just doesn't make any sense. Whether Magic likes it or not, Laettner was a member of that Olympic team, and that fact alone means that he's as deserving of being at this tea party as any of those other guys.

I'm sorry, but that's idiotic. His game was not weak. Just because it wasn't in the class of the top fifty players in NBA history doesn't make his NBA game weak. He's been a solid player in the league for over a decade. Note, I said solid, not great. But there isn't any shame in that. But lets say his game was truly weak. Lets say he became the worst top ten draft pick in the history of the NBA. That he played one game and was so unbelievably bad that he was cut and never had another shot. Does this make what Magic says OK? To quote you. . . HELL NO. Laetner was a part of that team, like it or not. Magic can give him a public dis if he wants to, but it's inappropriate at best and downrite mean spirited at worst. I'm NOT a Christian Laetner fan. I don't like Duke. I was sick when he hit that shot against Kentucky. I was a Magic fan. I cheered for the Lakers over the Celtics in the 80's. The talent of the players, the truth of Magic's statement and wheather or not I'm a fan of either player has nothing to do with this. This is about a moronic comment. MJ owes Laetner an apology. |

Should Laettner be invited to the reunion? Yeah.
Should he have been on the team originally? No way. I can kind of see where Magic is coming from, but it was a stupi thing to say. Laettner had no business on the original team... they probably just picked him because he was super popular and made a good token college guy. |

The time to pick on Laettner for being on the team was over a decade ago. Magic needs to grow up and stop living in the past.
