Lamest Personal Likes

So, we all have our guilty pleasures...

for me, it's British girl guitar-pop bands. No, not Spice Girl garbage...for me it's the Darling Buds and the Primitives (yes, I know they're from like 15 years ago). Usually I go for the much more cerebral type of band (Stone Roses, Verve, etc.), but for some reason I have the weakspot for the accent and the guitarish pop song.

weren't the primitives the group that did "Crash"? I liked that song.

Not sure how this is a "lame" personal like, IMO.

I guess if we're going under the "cd's we're ashamed we own (yet still listen to)", mine would be Billy Squier's Greatest Hits.

I'd also have to go with some of the power pop "metal" bands like Enuff Z Nuff and Honeymoon Suite. Just re-purchased those groups a few weeks ago.

"Crash" was their first hit, yes.

Kevin - you're welcome. There are other bands I like too, but I thought I'd stop there for fear someone would make fun of me.

I've always really liked Abba's music. I also really like Roxette's stuff, so maybe my guilty pleasure is Swedish pop bands?

"A League of Their Own."

I have seen this movie well over 20 times. I saw it once in the theater and just happen to catch it on cable all the time. And, usually, when I start watching it, I can't stop. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry. What more can I say?

"Top Gun". If I happen to be flipping through the channels and this movie is on, I just can't pass up watching it. I always wanted to be a fighter pilot growing up and couple that, along with the 80's music, and you have my favorite movie. Well, all that and the hot guys of course! Just kidding.....not really.

Hell, I will give this a go.

Music:
Hall and Oates
Michael Jackson
Yanni
E.S. Posthumus
Soundtracks for Lord of the Rings, Gladiator and Rocky.

When it comes to movies, some people think these are lame, but I like them for some reason:
Kung Pow
Napoleon Dynamite

For me it's bad 80's pop/metal bands. For example Poison, Warrent, Europe, anything along those lines.

I thought I'd shaken it, but I moved home a month ago and my old cd collection was waiting. It's all been downhill from there.

Oh, and I think Def Leppard are the greatest band ever. I'll get my coat.

Wait a minute. Back up. Are you telling me that Warrant was lame? From the tenderness of "Heaven" to the haunting melody of "I Saw Red" and the hot guitar licks of "Cherry Pie," Warrant may be the most versatile and acclaimed hair band ever.

Now, will all the Billy Joel fans please stand so Quiksand can update his ignore list? I must admit, I "like" Billy Joel in that I have a few of his records and I enjoy is music, but I have to admit that after closer inspection I do understand why Michael hates him so much. He's an acquired taste.

REO Speedwagon.

Just can't get enough.

And A League of Their Own is not a guilty pleasure in my book, its actually a good movie. A guilty pleasure is somehting more like Coyote Ugly, which, oddly, I cannot get enough of either.

And Cam, I'll need to borrow that Billy Squier CD someday.

EDIT: Almost forgot. I watch The Replacements regularly.

The Big Prize is still an excellent album, all these years later. I never really liked anything else they did, before or after, save New Girl Now.

I disagree, in a way, with that final statement. I think his songs are superficially appealing - but on any degree of further inspection, can be revealed to be unctious tripe. In a sense, maybe that makes them an "acquired distaste." If you are on the true path here, bully for you. Go ahead, Billy, throw that rock.

No shame in liking Starship Troopers It's a great movie and wonderful satire. What's there not to like? Good action. Hot chicks. Doogie Howser dressed up like a Nazi. Great satire. It's one of those either "you love it" or "hate it" movies. And there's nothing but love on this side of the laptop.

Count me in the "love Starship Troopers" category. Although I still want to see a faithful film adaptation of Heinlein's "Space Cadet".

Me and the wife really enjoy(ed) Starship Troopers. Good, satiric, campy fun, with bitchin' special effects.

As for you fans of The Postman...you're just a drifter with a bag of mail.

More Cougar shame:
* I have the Xanadu CD. I also like Enya.
* I am a sensitive sot. Some of the following movies have brought me to tears: Brian's Song (that's a gimme), The Color Purple (final scene), Glory (give 'em hell 54th!), Schindler's List (who wouldn't?), Saving Private Ryan (end scene), to name a few.
* I actually really enjoyed Titanic and Gladiator

This thread is honestly the first time I had heard anything positive about it, while hearing lots of nominations of it as worst movie ever - including lots of critics list, and seeing it used as a benchmark of badness on one movie forum. I was stunned to see your post expressing positive thoughts.

Huh. Interesting. Granted I tend to hang with a very, geek-tolerant crowd, so they are are more inclined than the average movie-goer to like this sort of movie, but I never thought that the film was so riviled. According to rottentomates the critics reviewed at "60% fresh" rate:

Journey's 'Escape' Tour Due On CD/DVD

By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

A 1981 Journey concert in Houston that was originally broadcast by the fledgling MTV is headed to CD and DVD as "Live in Houston 1981 -- Escape Tour." Due Nov. 15 via Columbia/Legacy, the project was produced by former Journey frontman Steve Perry, who exited the veteran rock act for good in 1998.

Although five of the songs from the show have been previously released, the CD portion sports never-before-available renditions of tracks like "Wheel in the Sky," "Lights," "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'," "Mother, Father," "Line of Fire," and "Escape," as well as "The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love)," which was not filmed and as such does not appear on the DVD.

The DVD is rounded out by interviews with band members and a rare photo slide show.

Here is the track list for "Live in Houston 1981":

"Escape"
"Line of Fire"
"Lights"
"Stay Awhile"
"Open Arms"
"Mother, Father"
Jonathan Cain solo
"Who's Cryin' Now"
"Where Were You"
Steve Smith solo
"Dead or Alive"
"Don't Stop Believin'"
"Stone in Love"
"Keep on Runnin'"
Neal Schon solo
"Wheel in the Sky"
"Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'"
"Anyway You Want It"
"The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love)" (CD only)

The reason is that Rundgren is a musical genius. He'll be replacing Ric Ocasek in the re-formed Cars, assuming it actually happens.
