Jets agree to terms with Testaverde

By DAVE GOLDBERG, AP Football Writer
September 27, 2005
NEW YORK (AP) -- Vinny Testaverde, who spent some of his best NFL seasons with the New York Jets, is set to rejoin the team to replace Chad Pennington, lost for the season with a shoulder injury.

The agreement was confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday by a person with knowledge of the deal, but who declined to be identified.

The Jets are desperate for a veteran quarterback with the loss of Pennington, and his backup, Jay Fiedler, who also injured his shoulder after replacing Pennington in Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Brooks Bollinger, in his third season, was expected to start for the Jets in Sunday's game against Baltimore.

Testaverde, who started for Dallas last season, was at the Jets' training complex Tuesday morning for a physical. He was unsigned when this season began.

The agreement was first reported by Newsday on its Web site.
Testaverde, who turns 42 in two months, grew up a few miles from the Jets complex, and was with the team from 1998 through 2003, leading them to the AFC title game in 1998.

The first overall pick in the 1987 draft by Tampa Bay, he has played 18 seasons in the NFL with the Bucs, Cleveland/Baltimore, the Jets and the Cowboys. He is sixth on the NFL's career list of passers with 44,476 yards.

There was a discussion this morning about this in the "Chad Pennington is Done" thread.

So, what are the jets gonna do next when Vinny gets hurt from old age?

Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of Herman Edwards. I normally can't stand his press conferences because his personality just grates on me.

But after watching his press conference on the NFL Network this afternoon I almost felt bad for him. Nomatter what "correct" response he had for the questions , he just had the look of total and complete defeat on his face. I had to walk out of the room.. and like I said, I can't stand edwards or the jets and I still couldn't keep watching.

Herm just tries to win the game.

Pats Sign Testaverde.

Quote:
FOXBOROUGH, Mass (AP) - Vinny Testaverde, who came out of retirement last season to help out the New York Jets, was signed on Tuesday by New England.

The 43-year-old quarterback, the first overall pick by Tampa Bay in the 1987 draft, has played 19 NFL seasons and has 269 touchdown passes, eighth in NFL history, and is sixth with 45,252 yards passing.

He becomes the third quarterback on the Patriots roster, behind Tom Brady and second-year man Matt Cassel. The Patriots will be his sixth team.

In addition to the Bucs, he has played for Cleveland, Baltimore, the Jets and Dallas. He retired after playing with the Cowboys in 2004, but last season rejoined the Jets, for whom he played from 1998-2003, after starter Chad Pennington and backup Jay Fiedler were injured in the same game.
Testaverde, who started four games for the Jets last season, became the first player in NFL history to throw at least one touchdown pass in 19 straight seasons. He completed 60 of 106 passes for 777 yards with one touchdown and six interceptions. He was subsequently replaced by Brooks Bollinger, who had started the season as the team's third stringer.

Why was this move made now? Have they only had 2 QBs all year and decided to add a third now - is Cassel not looking good in the 3 practice snaps he gets a week?

doesn't make any sense to me. if you believe belichick he claims vinny was in the plans all along. maybe vinny refused to play more than half a season. no idea.

Vinny is going to yell at the other QBs and tell them to get the hell off his lawn.

I don't think Brady is hurt yet. But he is taking a pounding in some games right now behind that offensive line which is playing way below its potential. I think Belichick feels Brady may actually get hurt in a game and they need somebody up to speed with the gameplan if Cassel can't do it. I still think Cassel is the backup and Vinny number 3. May also help Cassel have another vet there for mentoring. I believe the timing also works because with some of the IRs, they now have an extra roster spot which they didn't have at the beginning of the year.

I got worried about this when I saw they signed Vinny. I am in a survivor pool where everyones picks are due Teusday night. Out of 5,700 entries for $50, it is now down to me and 70 other people. I went with the Pats this week.

Vinny has been working on a backheel-dropkick that is going to embarass Doug Flutie and his pitiful forward dropkick. Belichick has been monitoring Testaverde's progress and knows he'll need new and exciting personal entertainment in week 16 or 17 after the Pats have locked in their playoff spot.

I didn't get to hear the whole story because I arrived home, but ESPN Radio was teasing a story that Brady is hurt and that is why Vinny was signed.

What you didn't hear is this paradox: he was hurt because they signed Vinny. Think about it.

Kidding.
