TCY after watching "Rudy" : I'll never treat walk-ons the same...

Just bought "Rudy" on DVD.
I had seen it once a long time ago and wow, what a great inspirational movie.
After watching Rudy, I don't think I'll ever be able to treat my TCY walk-on players the same anymore...

Maybe I could see myself trying to make a star out of a walk-on...
Has anyone ever had success with a walk-on player ? (meaning : playing him regularly, see him actually developp his ratins... ?)

I've mostly had to play walk on qb's after my qbs go down and results were mixed. Albeit it was just 4-6 games and mostly med school students under center.

I think SkyDog played guys way up beyond what they seemed capable of, but I can't remember if it was walk-ons or if they were fringe scholarship players.

Just this morning I was thinking about "Rudy" and decided to give out the "Rudy Award" to the walk-on who contributes the most each season in my next TCY career.

All I could think of while watching the movie was "What a pathetic excuse for a human being". It's sad that to him his life peaked with one play and went downhill after that.

He actually has used his inspirational story as a career. He goes around to universities/churches/places speaking on determination and shit like that. He has a website you can check out (I don't have the address right here though).

Not a Notre Dame fan, but it's kinda interesting how everything played out.

I've heard about his speaking career. So many people duped.. then again the whole insipirational speaking tour thing is a major hoax that people fall for.

Maybe...but I figured I'd throw that info out there since it's something I happen to know...and something who's relevance will probably never come up again

Time for my Dan Devine story. Devine was AD back at Missouri when that movie came out and he said it was total Hollywood crap at the end. He said the plan was always to let Rudy go into the game at the end if the game was under control and that any player who handed in his jersey to him would never get it back.

Having met the man and knowing people who know him well and following him at Missouri over the years, I believe him on both counts.

As I recall, Dan wasn't happy at all about the way he was portrayed. Alas, almost every movie needs a villan. Short of Vince Vaughn, it had to be Devine.

True stories rarely make good movies...that's why they are only 'based' on them.
