Fantasy Sports Ethics Question

An interesting scenario here. My friends and I are in a league that is completely non-money involved. Totally for fun. They are all down in Santa Barbara, and I am here in the Bay Area. We hold our drafts live at the local pizza parlor, but I couldn't be there this year. They used a list I sent, and gave me the results to enter into the computer (we use Yahoo).

Turns out, two teams drafted Marcus Robinson -- mine and another. I don't know which team drafted him first (it was both teams' last pick), and I need to enter the draft info in now to try to get our rosters in line for week one. So I can't verify that information until later -- meaning I have to guess. Marcus happens to be a Viking, and the other guy who drafted Robinson is a huge Vikings fan. Because of that, and the fact that I really don't want Robinson, I let the other guy have Robinson, and I was going to pick up the next scrub off the waiver wire.

Now, the people in this league are hardly knowlegable football fans. Even so, I was surprised to find WR Michael Clayton (TB) undrafted by anyone. Needing a 13th player to round out my roster, and being weak at WR, I used him as my team's final selection, to make up for re-drafting Robinson. I am very unsure of why my team ever drafted Robinson (or half the other guys on my roster, to be sure), since Clayton was WAY higher on my list than more than half my roster. I am also unsure why anyone else did not draft him, as though these people aren't all that savvy, there are a couple quick ones in the group.

It's completely beside the point, I think -- but I had no idea Clayton was there until AFTER I had decided to give Robinson to the other guy. Also, if I had been there to do the draft live, Clayton would have been long gone well before the last round.

All that being said, is it fair that I took Clayton? Seems like there has to be an error there somewhere, even though all the other rosters check out fully and Clayton is not on a single one of them.

I don't think it really matters. If you had drafted Robinson, you could have dropped him and picked up Clayton. Then your friends would still be idiots for not drafting him.

I don't see an ethical issue here. You would have taken Clayton anyway, and he was on your list. It's not like you're taking advantage of a late breaking injury that happened after the draft or anything.

Yeah -- I guess the fact that I'm getting someone whom some people argue will be a top ten WR for 'free' at the end of the draft is just making me feel like it's not right.

Nah, just imagine if you were there. It comes down to you and the other guy, the big Vikes fan picks Robinson, you would pick Clayton at that point. He's happy, you're happy.

Have you checked to see if any Mannings were left lying around in the QB list?
