"What's up with that?"

I think the term you are looking for is "quotation marks" - not "quote tags."

You say "Quotation marks", I say "Quote tags". I work in SGML all day, so it's "only natural."

Alternate reply:

"Inconceivable!"

"I don't think that means what you think it means..."

I never put whole "phrases" in quotes, but I do make those annoying hand "gestures" when I'm making a "point"...

I think Darkiller started it with the "Lance Armstrong lie" thread.
And guess what, he used it because it was a, gasp, quote. It was in fact a direct quote of the newspaper headline...

Lol, I do exactly the same thing, and while I'm doing it, I think to myself, "Geez, I hate people who make quote marks... aaaa! Why are my fingers doing that???"

As for the quotation marks in print, my favorites are when stores put up signs saying "sale". As if it's not really a sale, and the quotation marks are there to prevent the store from violating truth-in-advertising laws.

One of the "funniest" sites I've come across in a while:

One example:

Seen on a bowling alley lounge door:

No One Under Age "21" Permitted
