Just got a call from my parents saying that my grandfather just passed away. He hasn't being doing very well for a while now and it isn't totally unexpected, but it still sucks. He lived a long (93 years), full, happy life though.

I'm just glad that I got to see him last weekend in a semi-cognizant state...it had been a while since I had visited him and he'd deteriorated since then. Recently he asked my mom where her mother was (she died two years ago) saying that he hadn't seen her in two or three days and that he really needed to get to work. But when we were up there last we had to wake him up when we got there and he just looked around for a minute and then asked, "What is this, a family reunion?" It was good to see him and hear some of the old, familiar jokes still coming from him.

RIP PaPa, I'll miss you...

The thing that sucks the most about entering early adulthood is when close relatives start to move on. When you're young, you don't really appreciate it, and by the time you're old enough to appreciate it, you're getting close to not having it anymore.

Treasure the memories, Jeebs. My dad's mom passed away more than a year ago and I still think about her almost daily, about things that I remember happening when they still lived close enough for us to visit (almost fifteen years ago).

I know the feeling - my grandmother passed away earlier this year, also 93. Similar to your grandfather, our family knew the time was coming for my grandmother, so it wasn't a shock. She was in amazing shape for most of her life, and it was only in the last year that she started to deteriorate mentally and physically. I'm sad she's no longer here, but she lived an extremely full life and I had a long time to know her, so I don't feel cheated at all.

Sorry for the loss, Jeeber. At least you were fortunate in having a grandfather to remember. Both of mine were dead before I was born, so I've never had the experience. The closest is a great uncle on my dad's side, but it's not really the same, I suppose. In this regard, my daughter is better off, since she still has both grandfathers alive and well.

Sorry Jeebs. It's tough to lose your family.

My grandfather passed away two weeks ago tomorrow (95 years old). I just got back from Wisconsin from the funeral. Today would have been his 67th wedding anniversary. I just hope my grandmother continues to do well. It was great to hear the stories about his younger years though. As a grandparent, he came across as always older, but the stories of his youth, playing basketball and baseball, really brought him into focus as a person who had lived a long and wonderful life.

Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in this, and I will be thinking of you.

Well, my Step-Grandfather/Great-Uncle on my father's side just passed away. He lived a nice, long (94 years) healthy life in Iowa as a farmer, but he's been in and out of the hospital for the past couple of months with heart issues. He was just released into a hospice a couple of days, and my Grandmother was hoping to be able to start have meals with him again...

Speaking of my Grandmother, she's been extremely stressed out her husband's illness, and has been having troubles of her own (confusion, fatigue, no appetite, etc). My parents had recently broached the subject about if she would want to stay in Iowa if Lloyd passed away before her, or if she would want to come back to Texas where she has more family. She said she would want to come back to Texas, and my parents have been researching retirement communities in the area. It would be nice to have her around...she's a great lady.
