THE BEST WEEK EVER!!!
So here is a recap of our week:
Monday - Nothing Special Tuesday - A surprise gift of $1000 shows up in our mailbox, a generous family member sent it...very nice Wednesday - Radii wins $7000, can't believe our good luck! Start planning what to do with the money - paying off debt first and foremost - 7 months closer to getting a house!!!! Thursday - Check the website, find out Child Support has been issued and will be direct deposited into checking - woo hoo! With the rarity that the jerk actually pays - this is worth celebrating. Radii and I both comment on how this is definitely "our week" Thursday night - We go to BJ's Wholesale Club to purchase an iPod stereo thingy...like a docking station with speakers attached, turns your iPod into a stereo. They only have one left, it's on display in a glass case they and wont' be carrying the item any longer, so we get it at a good discount. Come home, open the box, and realize there are more pieces in there than there should be. I realize that the manager who boxed up the item, also included the 40 GB iPod that was plugged into the display. I go to radii and say - Holy Shit - we just got a 40GB iPod for free!!!!! I wonder what will happen tomorrow???? I am buying some lottery tickets!

Keeping the IPod is dishonest. Just saying.
Granted, this come from a guy who goes back to McDonalds when they give me a dollar too much in change.

if it's a last item in the display type situation, Schmidty, I honestly think the manager said.. "What the hell are we going to do with this? Ah hell, we'll just throw it in"

If the manager took it out of the case and placed it in a box, wouldn't of he seen the stuff?

I'd have to take it back if it was me.
How much is a 40 GB ipod worth? Probably enough for someone to get fired over losing it. |

After thinking about this - doesn't karma work both ways? Maybe I/we are getting rewarded for all the crap that goes on in our everyday lives. Maybe the karma gods are out there saying - you know, those two have been busting their butt and not getting many breaks...yet they still have faith and keep going. Let's reward them and let them know we are looking out for them. Isn't that just as possible as your scenario that we'll be punished for this? How do you know which is the punishment and which is the reward? Isn't that kind of the basis of faith in general? |

Well, the package was $107 - so I kind of doubt it. The iPod was plugged into the docking station in the case - but next to the sign for what we bought was a sign for the iPod...so I don't think so, but I could be wrong. |

I'm with Schmidty in toto on this one: keeping that iPod is asking, even downright begging, for something bad to happen ... usually something that will cost around double the value of the iPod.

Friday- Radii gets a little cocky, and loses big at the $300/$600 NLHE ring game. He now owes two guys named Fat Tony and Squirrelcage over $60K...

I would absolutely return it.
Also, relating to that McDonalds story: Friend of mine used to work there. He was telling me the shit he would pull (eating like 20 hashbrowns during a single breakfast service, jumping in and out of the drive-thru window, etc.), and said how one time a guy ordered a simple meal deal. And when he got his food (from Drive-Thru), the guy said "Hey, can I have a free hamburger and fries?" Just because the guy had the balls to ask, my friend was like "Sure man" and whipped him up the burger and fries. ~rpi-fan

maybe. really, it's doubtful they will even notice it is gone, and, if so, chalk it up as stolen or something. it's probably not going to get someone fired, and it liks a billionth of a percentage of the company's profit being lost.

Just making sure I get this straight. . . They have a dream week where everything goes their way. They get 7 months closer to a house, win money, catch break after break. . . And the way they give their thanks for this is to take a $300 item some store clerk made a mistake in giving them? Hell, I don't care if you believe in God, Karma, a purple celestial being that lives on Mars or the voices in your head. . . this is just wrong. I can only hope the store manager doesn't lose his job over this. I remember making a $200 mistake at a job when I was in college. I worked at a hotel as a night desk clerk. Tired from classes and not really thinking clearly I added up a bill wrong. I'd worked my way up to manager on duty (sounds F'n pathetic, but it meant a raise and it meant I could only work 40 hours to put myself through school, not 50 or 60) I came within a hair of losing my job for that. Yep, I'm sure the guy was thrilled about his cheap motel stay and still laughs about it to this day. I shudder to think of how my stupidity combined with his dishonesty almost turned my college life into a living hell. Enjoy the IPod. |

I find it funny that I never said we were keeping it - I alluded to it by saying "til then I have a 40 GB iPod", etc...but never came out and said whether or not we were keeping it. Yet every single person who has posted has assumed that we are...no one asked. Just jumped to either conclusion (that we were or we weren't) and started either attacking me or defending me. Interesting.

Wrong. In your original post that I reacted to, you said the following at the end: "I realize that the manager who boxed up the item, also included the 40 GB iPod that was plugged into the display. I go to radii and say - Holy Shit - we just got a 40GB iPod for free!!!!! I wonder what will happen tomorrow???? I am buying some lottery tickets!" You made no hint whatsoever that you'd return it. As you say, interesting.

Like I said, if you return the ipod you can get the kid in more trouble than if you keep it. I worked at a gas station several years ago. I was counting my drawer and was about $20 over. I kept checking, but each tome came out the same. I pocketed the $20, not because I wanted it or needed it, but because I could get in trouble for being that far off. It turned out that one of the cash drops into the safe was $20 short... I couldn't admit to pocketing it, so I kept my mouth shut. I was wrong, butadmiting what happened would have just made the problem worse. (I even felt guilty enough about it to add a few extra bucks to the drawer for a few nights to make it up.) Mistakes happen in retail. If they find out what the kid did it can bite him in the ass more than the ipod missing. They might not have even noticed it was gone.
