Worse: Buying ring w/fiancee's debit card or hocking your dog?

Allegations over ring land W.M. man in jail

Ouachita Parish Sheriff's investigators arrested Frank E. Walters, 38, 116 Douglas St., West Monroe, for using a woman's debit card without her permission to buy her an engagement ring.

Walters allegedly bought a $400 ring at Wal-Mart using the check card May 13, but the couple broke up eight days later. On June 3, Walters tried to return the ring for cash but left with the ring after being told he could only get credit on the checking account, store managers told investigators.

Detectives later discovered Walters used the ring and a dog as collateral to secure a loan from an individual.

He was booked Friday into the Ouachita Correctional Center on a charge of felony theft as well as two counts of failure to appear on traffic charges. Bond had not been set on the theft.

I realize this makes me a pretentious snob, and I readily admit that there are at least a half dozen traits that I possess that demonstrate haughty obnoxiousness, but one of the things I find most fascinating is that there are, amazingly enough, people who will buy an engagement ring at Wal-Mart.

This story obviously stereotypes people who would buy an engagement ring at Wal-Mart as petty thieves who pawn their dog, which doesn't reflect well on the group. But for me personally, if I were to contemplate buying an engagement ring at Wal-Mart, I would be compelled to reflect that there are many things wrong with my life that might mean I'm not ready for the rigors of marriage.

But that's just me.

I really wonder at what point in a loan negotiation it is appropriate to offer a dog as collateral. You don't want to start out offering the dog, it could overwhelm the financial institution providing the loan. Maybe the 2nd time they ask if there are any other assets to offer as security, but at that point you know they want to loan you the money; why offer a dog? Wouldn't a set of railroad ties or an old fridge work just as well? Unless you're attached to them more than the dog, or still owe money on them...

I think you would have to offer the dog up first as a joke, then slowly "convince" yourself as well as the loan officer that the dog would be good for collateral

kinda thought the same thing too, about Wal-mart engagement rings.

I had a friend who boght his wife a cubic zarconia engagement ring. He had told her it was real, as he had been supposedly putting away money a long time for it. She was so proud of that ring. She would often show it off to my wife and talk about how "the little rings are good, too" (my wife's ring is three nice saphires with diamonds surrounding. It was one she picked out, and is quite real). We, of course, knew he had only paid $50 for hers, but we held are comments. It wasn't until after they divorced and she tried to sell the ring that she discovered the truth. To this day, the thought of the look she had when they told her it was fake makes me smile in glee.

Don't worry, he didn't. He bought it from me.

I got it from a guy for a small loan I gave him. I also got a dog out of the deal.

Luckily he didn't buy the ring from the San Diego Chargers or they would have made him buy 1 promise ring and then 2 other engagement rings for any future potential wives to be, in order to buy that one $400 dollar engagement ring.
