Police: 25 Dead in Egyptian Resort Blasts

CAIRO, Egypt — As many as seven explosions struck the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik (search) on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula early Saturday, targeting several hotels and killing at least 25 people, witnesses and police said.

Saturday's explosions at 1:15 a.m., when many tourists would have been asleep, shook windows a mile away. Smoke and fire rose from Naama Bay (search), a main strip of beach hotels in the desert city popular with Israeli and European tourists, witnesses said.

A police official in Sharm el-Sheik said at least 25 were killed and 110 wounded in multiple explosions targeting the Ghazala Gardens (search) and Movenpick hotels in Naama Bay and the Old Market area nearby. Other officials in Sharm said there may have been as many as seven blasts: three in Naama Bay and four in the market.

Amal Mustafa, 28, an Egyptian who was visiting with her family, said she drove by the Ghazala Garden — a 176-room four-star resort on the main tourist strip in Naama — and it was "completely burned down, destroyed."

Khaled Sakran, a resident, said he saw one explosion from the Old Market. "I saw the saw the fire in the sky," he told The Associated Press. "Right after, I saw a light in the sky and heard another explosion, coming from Naama Bay."

"The blast shook my house, I can see the fire and lots of smoke," Akram al-Sherif, a Jordanian who was staying at a summer house less than a mile away, said.

In October 2004, a series of explosions hit several hotels in the Sinai resorts of Taba and Ras Shitan, about 100 miles northwest along the Gulf of Aqaba coast, killing 34 people. Egyptian authorities said that attack was linked to Israeli-Palestinian violence and launched a large wave of arrests in Sinai.

Thousands of tourists are drawn to Sharm for its sun, clear blue water, and coral reefs. It also has been a meeting place where world leaders have tried to hammer out a Mideast peace agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (search) and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas met there in February and agreed to a cease-fire.

I figured that much. However, I thought it may had something to do with the London bombings since it's a popular vacation spot for Europeans.

That was what I was thinking. Could go just as easily towards the Israeli/Palestinian stuff too though after reading what happened in '04.

The News networks aren't even talking about it. I am sure they have, but probably moved on after a few minutes. Unlike London were they stayed all day for something that happens every day in Iraq.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was Israeli-Palestinian, but it has been relatively quiet there.

On the subject of coverage by the networks, it's probably not enough white people killed to make it "newsworthy". Of course, minorities tend not to watch the news either.

Maybe a US college student will turn up missing after this and we will get Aruba teen coverage x 1000. It really is sad about the state of news coverage in this country. I know, I know they choose to report what we read so it really is sad about the state of what people want to read about in this country.

The majority of FoxNews folks probably couldn't even find Egypt on a map. They're pathetic. CNN is only a step or two behind, however.

Actually, FoxNews has some of the best analysts in TV news and know and share much more info than most of their rivals who generally just "copy-cat" one another. I give them high marks.

Fox has the best looking women, hands down. Does anything else matter?

And frankly I think it is wonderful that we have news organizations with differing viewpoints, and all of them do have their own viewpoints. If you flip channels and listen to some of all of them, they all have strong and weak points, and all of them have some good analysts and some bad ones. And listening to a variety of viewpoints is better than listening to just one.

American journalism has always been partisan. This illusion of an unbiased, neutral American journalism is a result of the domination of the big three network news programs for so many years. They wanted to create the impression that they were neutral, but they, too, had their own agendas and viewpoints. Now we are returning to what has been the norm for most of our history, with partisan news channels emulating the long history of partisan newspapers.

We all have our favorites, but in the end, I agree with this. I'd rather have as many different viewpoints interpreting a news event as possible. As many analysts breaking down the facts. In the end, watching CNN and Fox News is as close to getting both sides of a debate as you can. Obviously, FoxNews is doing a better job since they present both sides of any partisan debate much more often than does CNN or the others. But I do believe having them all is important.

And it does end up being 'in retaliation to crimes committed against Muslim throughout the world' according to the group claiming responsibility.

I was surpirsed it received more coverage yesterday on the news, but realized there were westerners amongst the wounded, then I wasnt so surprised.
